Our Members Do Make A Difference
“LEGARE”
We know very little about Maria Reiner. We do know that
she was just a simple woman, who led a very simple life,
yet she decided to leave a wonderful legacy to our
City and our Senior Citizens.
Legacy— comes from the Latin verb, legare ….meaning ,
"to appoint by a last will, or to send as an ambassador."
I often wonder if Maria realized that she would become
such a great Ambassador to our City? I try to imagine
what must have possessed her to leave such a legacy?
Perhaps it was to make sure that as we grow older, we
never grow lonely, or perhaps to keep seniors engaged in
the community and with each other.
Whatever the reason……... we can only imagine.
The one thing that we can be sure of is to do our best to
see that her legacy, as well as ours, lives on!
Coming Soon to the Maria Reiner Center
The Tree of Life
To a degree, large or small, we all have the capability to
become a Maria Reiner. If our Center has given value to
your life consider “paying it forward” and giving value to
the lives of others who will follow us. This beautiful
“Tree of Life” will be unveiled by late summer and we will
all have the opportunity to see that our
Center continues on.
For now…. Enjoy the Center, meet old friends, make new
friends and never be alone or lonely again.
More Details—Coming Soon!

We had the most amazing lunch on Thursday April 30th. Joe Carnell, member extraordinaire , wanted to provide lunch for
his fellow members at the Maria Reiner Center. He hired Strack and Van Til to cater a wonderful fried chicken luncheon,
with all the trimmings'! Joe called it a “Chain of Love”! Joe simply enjoys ‘Paying it Forward’. Because of his kind act we
raised an additional $300.for the Center! It all the acts of kindness added together that makes us what we are!
IT’S TIME TO PLAN THE FAMOUS MRC FLOAT!
The 4th of July Parade will be here before we know it. Carol Paska has agreed, one more time, to
take the lead. We need to put the old group back together and gather a few more hands to help build yet
another “Award Winning” Float! Skip Hansen gave us a few great ideas last year. Let’s put our heads together and see
where it will take us! Listen for a meeting date and time on one of our Sunday Night Calls.

Be a Polite Parker
We are getting busier and busier, and parking can get a little
difficult. However please don't park in the “stripped” areas
between the handicapped spaces. It makes it just a little difficult to get in or out of our cars! Also there is NO parking in
yellow painted areas.

“An Evening in Paradise”
The Luau Party truly was “An Evening in Paradise” and a real hit! Everyone smiled and laughed from the time that
they came in until they left. The “All Male Hula Dancers” led by none other than our Walking Club Leader, Ron
Wackett., was the big hit of the evening. “The Dirty Dozen” will be remembered for years to come with their 4
step Hula Lesson……...Orange, Apple, Tomato and Coffee Grinder! The evening became even more exciting with
the “Pass the Coconut Game”. There was lots of craziness and good laughs watching the party goers pass the nerf
football to one another between their knees! Congratulations to Ed Price for being the BIG WINNER!! Then there
was the Hula Hoop Contest which by the way did not last long—Barbara Jackson was the big winner there! The
Limbo Contest was the big finale. Many started the game and there were still a few left at the end, but Frieda
Velchek came out on top and she just celebrated her 90th Birthday! Delphine Schwartz gave a good show almost
to the very end! Last but not least the best dressed male went to Marion Rostkowski and the best dressed female
to the beloved Jan Lawrence!!
The decorations were fabulous and most were provided by our very own members, under the leadership of
Ray & Deb Killion, Barb & Tom Stokes and Judy Doah.
As always, the food was delicious and bountiful. Homemade appetizers and desserts were prepared by our own
members. A wonderful meal was supplied by several of our area partners; St. Mary Medical Center, Sebo’s Nursing and Rehab, Residences at Deer Creek, Brentwood, Towne Centre and our friend Randy Ralls at Service Doctor.
Bob Pellegino came all the way from Granger, IN to provide the sweet tropical sounds of the Steel Drums. Home
Instread Senior Care provided a refreshing Snow Cone Stand. Other generous donations were made by Rob
Moreth, our friend from Walgreens on Wisconsin St. , Gino’s Steakhouse, the Happy Hookers and Naughty
Knitters, Judy and Mike Hannigan, Maria Reiner Center Board of Directors, Debbie McKnight, members of the Maria Reiner Center Art Class, Helen Brooks . Many Thanks to Network Visuals—Ray & Christine Foster for always
making us look good on line, and the many volunteers that always make it all happen…... before, during and after
the event!
