PAINTING HOLBROOK RED at the HOLBROOK RACES
A large crowd were present for the annual Holbrook Races on Saturday. The weather was perfect and there was
a sea of red as everyone embraced the red theme to help raise funds for the Kiss Goodbye to MS charity.
Fashios on the fields was once again a highlight of the day with red being prevalent on the catwalk in all
categories. A large number of nominations sore a 7th race added to the program. Results freom the fashion on
the field will be in the next issue of the Holbrook Happenings.

Saturday saw beautiful weather for the Holbrook Races and as always it proved to be a popular spot for families
to gather for a relaxed day out
For Bryan Smith the race meeting was the perfect location for hosting a gathering of family and friends.
Testament to his ability to “give a good party” people rolled in from as far afield as Brisbane, Queanbeyan,
Wellington, Adelaide, Bathurst and a large contingent from the Wagga area with numbers being more than
doubled by local family and friends. He spent the day with a perpetual smile on his face enjoying the company
and the opportunity to catch up with family who, in some instances, hadn’t seen each other for close to 20 years.
A guest book was given to Bryan to mark the occasion with people taking the time to record their recollection of
past times spent with Bryan. This book revealed more than a few misdemeanours and elicited a lot of laughter.
All of the visitors thoroughly enjoyed the local races and the fantastic atmosphere that is always in abundance at
the Holbrook Races. As for Bryan – well he’s gone to bed, as with any good party the recovery will last at least
as long as the party itself – thanks to everyone who made his day so wonderful.

NSW Health to provide free
whooping cough vaccinations for
pregnant women in their third
trimester
NSW Health will now provide free vaccinations
against pertussis (whooping cough) to pregnant
women during their third trimester, after evidence
showed it lessened the risk of infants catching the
potentially fatal infection.
Mrs Tracey Oakman, Director Public Health from the
Murrumbidgee Local Health District said NSW
Health will fund the new initiative during the current
outbreak of whooping cough.
“We urge pregnant women to ensure they are
vaccinated in their third trimester, ideally at 28-32
weeks, as it offers the best protection for babies until
their first vaccination at six to eight weeks of age,”
said Mrs Oakman.
The NHMRC, which is responsible for endorsing the
Australian Immunisation Handbook, updated its
advice after a review of available evidence showed
that immunising pregnant mothers in the third
trimester significantly reduces the incidence of
whooping cough in newborn babies, and therefore
lessens the risk of infant death.
“Whooping cough vaccination during pregnancy has
been studied in more than 37,000 women in the
United States and the United Kingdom and is shown
to be very safe,” said Mrs Oakman.
“Studies in the UK, United States and Israel provide
evidence that the best way to protect infants too young
to be vaccinated themselves – who are at highest risk
of morbidity and mortality – is through vaccinating
the mother during pregnancy.
“It is vital that parents also ensure all their children
are up to date with their vaccinations to minimise the
risk of whooping cough circulating in the family.
Adults in close contact with young babies should also
discuss the benefits of the vaccine, which is available
on prescription, with their GP.
“Whooping cough is easily spread to new babies, so
it’s important to keep people with coughs away from
them, in case they have whooping cough or other
nasty infections,” she said.
Pertussis disease notifications in NSW have been
increasing since mid-2014.
The Murrumbidgee Local Health District had 249
pertussis notifications in 2014, and 56 this year so far.
“Epidemics of pertussis occur about every three to
four years, as community immunity wears down. The
last outbreak was in early 2012 and we are seeing the
kinds of numbers that may indicate be heading
towards another epidemic,” said Mrs Oakman.
Pertussis is a serious respiratory infection that causes
a long coughing illness. In babies, the infection can
sometimes lead to pneumonia and occasionally brain
damage, and can be life threatening.

Progress on the $3 million Holbrook Multipurpose
Service (MPS) project was outlined to members of the
Local Health Advisory Committee (LHAC) and
Hospital Auxiliary on 24 March. The meeting was
attended by representatives from Murrumbidgee Local
Health District, Health Infrastructure and consultants
who provided an update on the planning, design and
construction process.
A workshop was held earlier in the day with local
health staff to finalise concept options and endorse the
preferred master plan. Holbrook LHAC Chair Judy
Wettenhall said the meeting was very informative and
outlined the future vision for the local health facility.
“The project will extend the existing residential aged
care by six beds, to a total of 22 aged care beds.
Larger residential aged care bedrooms have recently
been incorporated into the schematic design and the
new single bedrooms will have private ensuites,” she
said.
“A home-like environment for our aged care residents
is a feature of our facility and this will be an ongoing
priority with the upgrade,” Ms Wettenhall said. The
project will also include minor refurbishment of the
existing unit and an expansion of utility areas such as
linen storage and laundry.
Planning is scheduled to be completed in mid-2015.

According to local MP Sussan Ley, “our region is a
tech savvy area, we’ve been hungry to get the NBN as
soon as possible and today we make good on that
promise to start making it happen”.
“The Coalition knows rural areas need this technology
just as much as our major centres, we’re delivering the
technology as fast as we can but only making
assurances we know can be achieved”.
Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull said “the
progress of the NBN to date, shows the Government’s
reform of the NBN will have the rollout completed
sooner, more affordably for consumers and cheaper
for taxpayers”.

ANZAC Centenary
Railway Preservation
Greetings everybody, I hope you all had an enjoyable
Easter. Firstly, I want to apologize for some missing
information under Railway Preservation in the last
edition of “Holbrook Happenings”. You are probably
asking where is this submission for a feasibility study
he is talking about? The entire document was too
lengthy to go into “Happenings”. For those
interested readers, feel free to contact me for an ecopy, or alternatively a hard copy for viewing is
available at the library. From Holbrook’s perspective
(heritage and tourism), it is well worth reading. As
mentioned in the previous edition of “Happenings”,
we are still seeking those who may have an interest
in our railway to “come on board” to our group. It is
envisaged to become a non profit organisation.
By way of an update, we have yet to find out who the
land owner is of the disused Culcairn to Holbrook
railway. This is important for us, as they need to be
made aware of the impending feasibility study. We
are awaiting replies from our enquiries.
Work is in progress to seek funding avenues for the
feasibility study.
Kind regards and I look forward to more people
expressing an interest. Chris Webster

The ANZAC Centenary (from 2014 to 2018)
commemorates Australia’s involvement in World
War I and remembers anyone who has served in a
war or conflict as well as those men and women
still serving in the Defence Forces today.
It was on 1 November 1914 that the first convoy of
Australian and New Zealand ships left Albany in
Western Australia to transport the ANZACs to the
battlefields of World War I. In 2014, the days
surrounding this date play host to a number of
commemorative events such as a ceremonial
sunset, a ship open day program and a troop
march.
When most people think of the ANZACs, they
think about the infamous landing at Gallipoli on 25
April 1915. The 100th anniversary of this moment
will be commemorated with an ANZAC Day long
weekend in Australia and many other events
around the world.
Perhaps the largest event will be the traditional
Dawn Service at Gallipoli. 8000 Australians, 2000
New Zealanders and 500 official representatives
from other Nations will form a 10,500 strong
crowd on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey.
In Australia, the five years of the Centenary will be
filled with air shows, art awards, marathons,
exhibitions, parades and much more.
Communities all over Australia will remember,
record and retell some of the millions of stories
and events that Australians experienced during
World War I

PRU6I6G TIPS
There are a few simple pruning tips that will ensure
you are keeping your garden thriving.
• Prune your plants where you want them to grow.
Shorten stems to increase growth, remove stems to
stop plants growing in bunches.
• Remove any dead, diseased or damaged sections
of your trees, shrubs or flowers.
• Grasses should be cut as close to the ground as
possible to promote growth.
• Young trees should be pruned as little as possible.
• Fruit plants need to be regularly pruned.
• Do not prune your plants for the sake of pruning
them.
• Always use the correct pruning tool for the job.
