Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Australia celebrates Holi Mahotsav each year at Darling
Harbour since 2003. Holi Mahotsav 2016 will be the fourteenth year of
celebration.
Holi Mahotsav is a grand and unique festival of colour,
friendship and harmony. It attracts a diverse cross
section of Australians and each year is growing in
popularity, more than 100,000 people enjoyed the
spectacle of Holi Mahotsav the last two years of which
of this more than 60% were from Indian subcontinent /
South Asian communities.
A mixture of cultures come together
under one banner to experience the
ability of people to unite and transcend
boundaries of race, caste, culture, age
and gender or simply rejoice in the
array of cultural performances.

ABOUT BHARATIYA VIDYA BHAVAN AUSTRALIA
As one of the largest NGO’s in the world, the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (The Bhavan), literally meaning the House of
Indian Knowledge/Wisdom, has over 367 constituent institutions. The Sydney Centre is its first in Australia. The
organization has been playing a crucial role in educational and cultural interactions in the world, holding aloft the
best of Indian traditions and at the same time meeting the needs of modernity and multiculturalism.
Major annual events:
Publications:
• Holi Mahotsav in Darling Harbour - in first weekend (over two days) of March
/ April every year.
• Bhavan Australia’s - monthly magazine is highly
respected by various government and nongovernment organizations. It is considered one of
the best magazines published by non-Anglo
communities in Australia. It reaches out to a wide
variety of important people in Australia including
federal and state Members of Parliament,
Ambassadors, High Commissioners and Consuls
General of all major countries represented in
Australia, mayors of all councils of NSW, public
libraries in NSW and variety of community leaders.
• Interfaith prayer meeting - every year on 30 January at the Parliament House,
Sydney. Every year religious leaders from diverse religions are invited to recite
their respective peace prayers.
• Nonviolence Month – A project under ICON Australia – It was launched on 2
October 2014 at UNSW and was concluded with Nonviolence concert on 1
November 2014 at SGI Auditorium in Olympic Park.
• The International Day of Nonviolence - the birth anniversary of Gandhi on 2
October every year which has been declared by the United Nations as the
International Day of Nonviolence from 2007
• The essay competition - "The Relevance of Mahatma Gandhi philosophies
today in the context of: social responsibility, or world peace, or environment".
• Cricket Masala – A Combination of Cricket & Culture amongst the South Asian
communities was introduced in April 2006. This event has now expanded and
there are 12 teams from 12 different heritages (over two days) and Cricket
NSW and Cricket Australia have joined in as partners..

Festival Themes
Colour sessions are the highlight of
the festival. People from diverse
communities participate in the colour
throwing sessions. The colour sessions
are perfect picture of peace and
integrity where people apply colours
to strangers and friends alike and
break the barriers of community,
culture, race, gender and colour.
Visitors to the festivities enjoy
delicious vegetarian Indian food and
crafts.
Interfaith prayers focuses on bringing
all religion prayers under one platform
offering prayers for people suffering
around the world due to human and
nature. The Bhavan Australia pays
tributes to the greatest apostle of
peace, Mahatma Gandhi, all-religion
prayers for peace in the world are held
while the senior religious leaders pay
tribute to the apostle of peace.
Street Procession - Rath Yatra is a
hand pulled chariot followed by
devotees. People join this street
procession by dancing and singing
along with the crowd. It demonstrates
a great picture of equality and
integration. The parade starts in
Darling Harbour going through the
main streets of Sydney CBD, Day
Street, Bathurst Street, Kent Street,
King Street, George Street and
Liverpool Street before culminating in
Tumbalong Park where the procession
closes.
Sacred Holi Fire Ceremony is

throughout the festival by hundreds of
national and international artists of
different cultural backgrounds. These
artists represent a rich mixture of
culture, spirituality and entertainment.

and teachers.
Every year Holi Mahotsav
welcomes different performing
schools from around the world
that request to perform in the
colourful and vibrant festival.
In 2015 Holi Mahotsav had 33
international students from Birla
Public School, Doha, Qatar
participating by means of
classical, semi classical, folk and
contemporary dance
performances.
In previous year students and artists
have come from different countries
to perform at Holi Mahotsav.
