April 27-28, 2015 POrter Park at Hilken Stadium Concordia University PORTLAND INTERSCHOLASTIC LEAGUE Welcome to the Inaugural PIL City Slugfest Thank you for being part of the first annual PIL City Slugfest. The City Slugfest was created to put a spotlight on inner city high school baseball in Portland. Our hope is our PIL players and coaches have a great time; and that we not only generate enthusiasm for baseball in our community, but that we bring community together for two days of games at Porter Park at Hilken Community Stadium on the campus of Concordia University. Please enjoy the games and please share your love of the game with others. The City Slugfest is working hard to further bond the PIL as a league committed to togetherness, community and making the game more inclusive. We do this all with the intentions of maintaining high levels of competitiveness and keeping our national pastime connected to its communities. Much thanks to Marshall Haskins, Bill Ranta and Jenna Wilson of the Portland Interscholastic League athletics for their support. And special thanks to Rob Vance, head baseball coach at Concordia University, and the Concordia athletic department for making this event possible. Also, we are very grateful for the support of the Hillsboro Hops, the Old Timers & Active Baseball Association of Portland, NW Star Academy, Oregon City Sporting Goods, Eastbay, Wilson/ DeMarini, Louisville Slugger, Jugs, Big League Chew, The Barbers and Bi-Mart. YOUR EMPLOYEE-OWNED BI-M are proud to sup HIGH SCHO SPORT Want to play baseball in college? There are affordable opportunities to continue your education and still play the game you love at the next level. Ask your head coach about college opportunities. Have you considered junior college? For many, it’s an inexpensive and a right-fit path to educational and athletic development. There are many junior colleges in the area that have baseball programs. Feel free to call or email their coaches. We have made all of the below coaches aware of the PIL City Slugfest. They would be happy to answer any questions you may have about going to college and playing baseball. Clark College in Vancouver, Washington Head Coach: Brett Neffendorf [email protected] 360-992-2691 Clackamas Community College Head Coach: Jim Hoppel [email protected] 503-594-3704 Mt. Meet with a counselor regularly! Get advisement. Ask about academic scholarships/grants. Ask about specific requirements to attend college. • Attend all your classes • Get homework submitted on time • Regularly meet with your advisor and coach • Apply to a school/s in a timely manner • Graduate from High School When colleges calculate your GPA for admissions purposes, they will often ignore the GPA on your transcript and focus solely on your grades in core subject areas. Grades for physical education, music ensembles, and other non-core courses are not as useful for predicting your level of college readiness as core courses. In general, a typical high school core curriculum looks something like this: • English: 4 years • Foreign Language: 2 to 3 years • Math: 3 years • Science: 2 - 3 years • Social Studies (including history): 2 to 3 years While admissions standards vary greatly from one college to another, nearly all schools will be looking to see that applicants have completed a standard core curriculum. As you choose classes in high school, these core courses should always get top priority. Students without these classes may be automatically disqualified for admission. Concordia University is a private school in NE Portland worth considering too. For more info, contact their athletic department or admissions department. Concordia’s assistant baseball coach Braden Wells, a former star JC player and outfielder for Oregon State, works in admissions. Feel free to contact him at 503-493-6267 or by email at [email protected]. Also, there are opportunities to continue your baseball career and education at NCAA Division III Universities and Colleges in the area. The coaching, academic curriculum and student-to-teacher ratio at DIII schools is extraordinary. NCAA DIII schools do not offer athletic scholarships, but there are merit and need based scholarships available. If your high school academic performance is exceptional, DIII might be a right-fit. We have listed the DIII schools in the area that have baseball programs and some have JV baseball programs too. For more info, visit the below schools’ websites. Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon www.lclark.edu Willamette University in Salem, Oregon www.willamette.edu Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon www.pacificu.edu Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon www.linfield.edu George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon www.georgefox.edu There are also academic/baseball opportunities at NAIA schools in Oregon at Corban University in Salem and at Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls. To continue your baseball career at a DI or DII school, you will need to be recruited, either as a scholarship student-athlete or invited walk-on.
