Film in a Barn Belle Wednesday 20 May 7pm | The Barn at Malkin House, Holmfirth £12.50 with Wine & Cheese OD M F O F IL & How We Used To Live Dir. Paul Kelly (UK 2013 70mins U) One of the highlights of the Festival will be the much loved Saint Etienne playing live to Paul Kelly’s brilliant and acclaimed cinematic portrait of London, created from archive colour footage from 1950 to 1980. The band’s cool, swinging 60s’ electro pop soundtrack written by Paul Wiggs with the vocals of Sarah Cracknell is a perfect match for this elegant and evocative film. Dir. Lasse Hallstrom (US 1014 124mins PG) A real crowd pleasing comedy-drama bursting with flavour in which an Indian family with a talented chef moves to rural France and opens an curry house opposite a not-so pleased and icy Helen Mirren (who is in great form). Dir. Amma Asante (UK 2013, 99mins 12) Period drama set in 18th century England, in which the mixed race illegitimate daughter of a British admiral is brought up by her aristocratic great uncle and his wife, and plays a part in the movement to abolish slavery. Visually impressive, with very strong performances from the cast. Chandor (US 125mins 15) A murkily brilliant, cool and effective crime drama from one of the best new US directors (Margin Call, All is Lost). In this character-led story in the manner of Sidney Lumet, a legitimate businessman tries to keep his truck company afloat in the most violent year (1981) of New York’s history. Carol Reed (UK 1947, 111mins PG) In the shady back streets of Belfast, an IRA leader goes into hiding and is the subject of a large-scale manhunt after being wounded in a heist gone wrong. As good as The Third Man, this is another great Carol Reed film. James Mason considered this to be his best performance. Dir. Jessica Hausner (Austria 2015 96mins 12) Set in Berlin 1810 and of Germanys’ greatest romantic poet, Heinrich von Kleist, and the historical events surrounding his famed suicide. Hausner is one of the most interesting directors around (her previous Lourdes was wonderful). Beautifully composed, this is an oddly affecting bone dry tragic-comedy of manners.
