Principal’s Corner
Dear Parents,
Before we say good-bye for the summer, I want to give
you a quick update on a couple of news items.
Staff Update:
We are pleased to announce that Kristy Severson has
accepted the first grade teaching position! Mrs.
Severson has been our long-term sub since February
and has done an excellent job stepping in to her role in
first grade. She holds a master’s degree in Teaching,
Learning and Teacher Education from the University of
Nebraska, and a bachelor’s degree in Elementary
Teaching from the University of Nebraska. In addition,
Mrs. Severson has 16 years experience in education as
a classroom teacher and several years working as a
reading specialist and Head Start Family Educator. She
and her husband live in Northfield. We are excited that
she will be continuing to share her many gifts with our
Holy Cross students!
We extend our best wishes to our long-time business
manager, Theresa Sticha, who has accepted a position
in the private sector. This is a great opportunity for
Theresa to advance her career, and we wish her all the
best in this new endeavor. After thirteen years at Holy
Cross, she will be greatly missed.

Summer Kickoff

The Kindergarten, 1 and 2 grade students took a
field trip to Murphy’s Landing on Thursday. They
traveled back in time to the 1880s and learned about
what life was like for early Minnesotans. Here the
second graders learned how to do laundry with a
washtub and wringer.
Start summer off with your friends at the Holy Cross
Catholic School Summer Kickoff on Thursday, May 21,
from 6 to 9 PM. Parents must accompany children—
please do not drop them off. Tickets need to be
returned to the office by Monday, May 18, even if you
are not planning on attending. This is an important
fundraiser for our Athletic Association and a fun time for
parents and kids alike, so please join us!
Parades and Festivals
“
Congrats,
Kindergarteners!
Summer parades and church festivals are important
community events, and we want Holy Cross Catholic
School to be visible participants. These are great
opportunities for us to get our name in front of many
families in our area and share what Holy Cross means to
us. A signup will be emailed in the next week, and
volunteers are needed to walk in parades and work a
table at the festivals. These are fun events, so please
sign up to participate! The first parish festival is at St.
Nicholas on June 21, and the parades begin with the
Elko New Market Fire Rescue Day Parade on June 27.
Watch for the Signup Genius in your email.

Uniform Swap and Summer
Sale Info
Bring in gently used uniform clothing to school next
week, and we will host a uniform swap in the gym
during the Summer Kickoff on Thursday, May 21, from
6 to 8 PM. Drop items off, or find something you
need—there is no cost. If you shop but do not bring in
items to exchange, a free will offering is accepted but
not required.
Donald’s Uniforms is holding its summer sale in the
month of June, during which time they are offering
20% off all basic uniform items and 10% off school
logo merchandise. The offer is valid in stores and
online, and no coupon code is required. See the flyers
in this week’s Thursday Folder for more details.
Driving for Excellence
The second annual Driving for Excellence fundraiser
will be held at Elko Speedway on Saturday, June 27.
Participants will sign up to drive a real race car on
the track at Elko Speedway and compete against
other Holy Cross drivers. New this year is a
women’s only division! Those who choose not to
drive can join in the fun by purchasing a spectator
ticket and joining the group for a catered dinner at
Champions. Drivers and their guests can enjoy the
rest of the night’s races from a luxury skybox. Watch
your email for more information, or call Anne
Fredrickson at 952-652-6100.
Last week we announced that we are implementing a
K-8 Summer Reading Program! In case you missed
the sheets that came home, all the information is
posted to the home page of our website.
This program is for all current students in grades K-7.
We strongly believe that reading and reading
comprehension are skills that need to be practiced on
a regular basis in order for students to succeed in
school. With that, we want the students to continue
practicing these skills during the summer months.
Some books are available from the classroom
teacher and can be checked out, while other books
you may need to find at your local library. Happy
Reading!
Kids Bowl Free
Jesse James Lanes in Northfield is participating in
the Kids Bowl Free summer program, which offers
two free games of bowling per day all summer to
kids who are registered. Go to
www.kidsbowlfree.com/JesseJames to register and
receive the free bowling passes every week by
email. You can purchase an additional pass that will
allow two adults from your household to bowl with
the kids.
