March 29, 2015 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
[email protected]
March 29, 2015
Dear sisters and brothers
of Holy Family,
This Palm Sunday we start our
Holy Week, the heart of the whole
liturgical Year in which we accompa
ny Jesus in His passion, death and resur
rection. It is so powerful since we recall the
central mysteries of our faith in such a short
period of time. From Palm Sunday to Easter
Sunday we stand in awe and reflect of what God has
done for us and what we have done to God. We walk
with the crowd singing Hosanna to our Lord and
King, stand with the disciples watching Jesus Institute Eucharist and priesthood as He gives us the
model by washing the feet, stand at the foot of the
cross on Good Friday and at the entrance of the
tomb on Easter Sunday. Our elect and candidates
receive the sacrament of initiation on the vigil and
Easter Sunday. We welcome new members to our
parish family. What an amazing week!
Pope Francis during his general audience on March
27, 2013 talked about the journey with Jesus in Holy
Week, He said, "in Holy Week we live the crowning
moment of this journey, of this plan of love that runs
through the entire history of the relations between
God and humanity. Jesus enters Jerusalem to take
his last step with which he sums up the whole of his
existence. He gives himself without reserve, he
keeps nothing for himself, not even life. At the Last
Supper, with his friends, he breaks the bread and
passes the cup round “for us”. The Son of God offers
himself to us, he puts his Body and his Blood into
our hands, so as to be with us always, to dwell
among us. And in the Garden of Olives, and likewise
in the trial before Pilate, he puts up no resistance, he
gives himself; he is the suffering Servant, foretold
by Isaiah, who empties himself, even unto death (cf.
Is 53:12)."
On Palm Sunday we listen to St. Mark's account of
Jesus' passion in which we see many persons respond to Jesus in many different ways. There are
people who deny Jesus and walk away from Him
and also people who stand with Him in His sufferings. Where do we stand? We are called to stand
with Jesus and align our own identity with Jesus and
walk with him to the cross. Like Jesus, to be faithful
followers by taking up our cross means we will feel
this to the depths of our humanity: we will suffer, we
will lose heart, we will cry out to God to take life's
Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord
miserable lot away from us. But like Jesus, we have
divine life that gives us the strength to carry our
cross. It is the divine life, which we received in our
baptism that strengthens us to stand faithfully with
Jesus.
Let the powerful mysteries we celebrate during this
Holy Week touch us and transform our lives so that
we may always stand and walk with Jesus as His true
disciples.
Have a grace filled Holy Week!
Fr. Sunny.
Queridos Hermanos y
Hermanas de Holy Family,
Este Domingo de Palmas, empeza
mos nuestra Semana Santa, El cora
Pilato, no pone resistencia.
¿Estamos
llamados a estar junto a Jesús y alinear nuestra

"We do not come to church to attend the service as a
spectator, but in order, along with the priest, to serve God.
Everything we do—our entering, being present, our
kneeling and sitting and standing, our reception of the
sacred nourishment—should be divine service. This is so
only when all we do overflows from the awareness of a
collected heart and the mind’s attentiveness."
— Fr. Romano Guardini,
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Is today “Palm Sunday” or “Passion Sunday”?
Though now known officially as Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord, confusion is understandable, since before
the 1969 reform of the calendar two separate Sundays
bore these titles. Passion Sunday was a week before Palm
Sunday. To add to the confusion, the Gospel accounts of
the Passion of the Lord were not read on Passion Sunday,
but on Palm Sunday! On Passion Sunday, the cross and
statues were veiled in full purple drapes. The organ had
fallen silent at the beginning of Lent, and now the sanctuary bells were replaced by wooden clappers. The introit
(opening chant) for the old Mass of Passion Sunday hints
at a reason for reform: “Do me justice, O God, and fight
my fight against a faithless people” (Psalm 42). This liturgy was laden with references to the “infidelity” of the
Jews, a theme that gave rise to inflammatory preaching
and, in some places, attacks against the persons and property of the Jewish people. This does not stand as a
“treasure” of any sort in our tradition. Our authentic tradition, rather, is the ability to reflect and repent and to seek
reconciliation with the Jews, our brothers and sisters in the
love and service of God.
