Hail, O thou solemn festival day,

Behold, the earth is in her spring,
and the grace of the world is reborn,
thus bearing witness that she has all
her gifts restored with her risen Lord.
For everywhere, grove in leaf and
meadow in bloom now give praise to
the triumphant Christ, Who hath
passed through the sorrows of hell.
Seeing the human race plunged into
deepest misery, in order to save
mankind, Thou Thyself becamest Man
as well.
The grievous chains of hell’s domain
were broken asunder, and the abyss
quaked with fear as Thy light shone
upon the brink.
5. Pollicitam sed redde fidem,
precor, alma potestas:
Tertia lux rediit, surge
sepulte meus.
6. Solve catenatas inferni
carceris umbras,
Et revoca sursum quidquid
ad ima ruit.

But do Thou keep Thy faithful
promise, I pray Thee, loving Lord! The
third morn is already come; arise, O my
buried One!
Set free the shadowy souls shackled
in the prison of hell, and call back to life
whatsoever hath fallen to ruin in the
underworld.
Show us Thy face once more, that all
ages may see Thy light; restore the
daylight that vanished from our senses
at Thy death!
