Gospel, and carry out Christ's message through prayer and deed
HOLY WEEK & WEDDINGS
Have you ever participated in the Mass on Holy
Thursday? If not, come to Mass at Holy Name
Cathedral this Thursday at 5:15pm. The
coordination of the liturgy, the music, the
Eucharistic procession, the adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament that follows the Mass until late at night,
and the decoration of the Church produce one of the
most beautiful prayers of the year. Archbishop
Cupich will be main celebrant. Father Lou Cameli
will preach. There will be a collection with the money going to
Catholic Charities for ministry to AIDS victims.
On Friday, there will be no Mass. In fact, Good Friday is the only day
on which Mass is not celebrated in any Catholic Church. We see the
Triduum – Thursday, Friday, & Saturday – as one period of time, the
reenactment and re-presentation of the events of the original Holy
Week. On Friday, a four-part prayer will be offered at both 12:10pm
and 5:15pm. The prayer will include (1) the reading of the Passion at
the 12:10-hour; the Passion will be sung at 5:15. The homily will be
delivered at midday by Father John Boivin. At 5:15pm I will preach;
Archbishop Cupich will be the celebrant. (2) Next we hear an
extended Prayer of the Faithful/Universal Prayer. A collection basket
will support the Church in a religiously divided Holy Land. (3) All
will be invited this year to come forward and adore the Cross. (4)
Finally, Eucharist, consecrated the previous evening at Mass, will be
carried to the main altar. Communion will be distributed. In addition
to the two main liturgies, Stations of the Cross will be prayed in the
Cathedral at 3:00pm. Also, another group of Catholics will gather in
the Daley Center Plaza (Dearborn/Washington) at 8:45am for the Way
of the Cross through downtown Chicago. Walking in silence following
the Cross, they will make five stops for songs, meditations, and
readings from the Passion. They will conclude this dramatic witness in
the Holy Name Cathedral courtyard just before the 12:10pm liturgy
inside. You are invited.
As I have said often, I am proud of the adults to be received into the
Catholic faith through baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist next
Saturday at Easter’s first Mass, the Vigil beginning at 7:00pm. All are
invited to participate in that lengthy, yet powerful Mass celebrated by
Archbishop Cupich who also will preach, his only Easter Mass at Holy
Name. Note that there will no 5:15pm Mass next Saturday; there will
be no confessions on Saturday.
Prepare for Easter by taking part in the Sacrament of Penance.
Extended hours for private confession will be scheduled this week
Monday from 3:30-4:30 (Father Boivin) 4:30-5:30pm (Cardinal
George); Tuesday 4:30-5:30pm (Father Cambe); Wednesday 3:304:30pm (Fathers Fajardo & Zamora) and 4:30-5:30pm (Cardinal
George & Father Boivin); Thursday 4:30-5:30 (Fathers Mayall &
Cambe); and Friday 3:00-4:00pm (Fathers Zamora, Fajardo, Mayall, &
Cameli) and 4:00-5:00pm (Fathers Woestman, Boivin, Cambe &
Moriarity). The confessions will be heard on the lower level. All
rooms are accessible; you can take either the elevator in the southwest
corner or the stairs at the State Street door. You may confess either
behind the screen or face-to-face in all rooms.
older; and those at least 18 but not yet 59, should eat just one full meal
(two smaller meals are permitted on Good Friday).

Last week I heard a tour bus guide telling gullible customers that
“Holy Name Cathedral is home to several hundred weddings a year.
Most couples, Catholic or not, book their weddings 2-3 years in
advance for this famous destination.” Where did he get that baloney?
Let me use a crowded day at the Cathedral to set some facts straight
about Holy Name weddings. TRUE or FALSE.









There are five wedding slots available most Saturdays and two on
Friday afternoons. TRUE – 11:00am; 1:00, 2:30, 4:00 and
6:30pm Saturday plus 2:30 & 4:00pm Friday
September & October are the earliest booked months. TRUE.
June is 3rd.
Although still a lot, the number of Cathedral weddings has
dropped in the last 5 years. TRUE. Because of many Catholics
not getting married, destination weddings, and the number (60 last
year) of weddings at the Quigley Center Chapel have hurt us.
A Cathedral parishioner can be married at the Quigley chapel.
FALSE. The Cathedral is your Church. Holy Name priests do
not do weddings at the Quigley Chapel. Our parish gets no
money for Quigley ceremonies. The Quigley wedding cost is
more expensive; in addition, weddings there cannot use the
Cathedral parking lot. Weddings at Quigley are for “special”
cases, not Holy Name parishioners. Although I love Quigley and
worked there for 12 years, I think Holy Name is prettier and more
famous anyway!
Either the bride or the groom needs to be a baptized Catholic in
order to be married at Holy Name Cathedral – TRUE. That’s also
true of any Catholic Church.
You have to be a practicing parishioner to be married at the
Cathedral. FALSE. Parishioners are given preference; but we
welcome children of parishioners, those who used to belong here
while going to school, and other special cases like the ones who
look into Quigley’s Chapel.
Photos are not allowed at Cathedral weddings. FALSE. Posed
photos before or after the ceremony are not allowed inside (but
welcome outside in the pretty courtyard). Inside, a good
photographer can get breathtaking photos of a wedding. I’ve seen
the best!
It costs a fortune to get married at Holy Name. FALSE. The
basics including Church fee, beautiful music, and preparation
services amount to $1,835 – considerably less than Quigley and
far less than half of most wedding receptions.
We like doing weddings at Holy Name Cathedral. TRUE…
VERY TRUE

Lenten Almsgiving
The Ash Wednesday Gospel urged us to include prayer,
fasting and almsgiving in our Lenten practice. If you are
looking for a deserving recipient of your alms, may we
suggest three?
1.
Our Thursday and Friday Suppers are always in need
of cash donations (see page 10 of this bulletin);
2.
Chicago Shares provide food vouchers to be given to
anyone looking for a meal (sold on Sunday morning on
the third Sunday of each month or online through our

Mission
Establish peer support groups for children who are grieving
due to death, divorce or other painful transition in their
families.
Objectives
To help participants share their feelings and understand the
grieving process. To provide an opportunity for emotional
healing. To assist in building a stronger sense of selfesteem. To teach appropriate coping mechanisms.
Program Format
Small groups led by a trained facilitator. Topical meetings
with activities designed to inspire participant interaction. A
safe place where participants can share feelings and
overcome feelings of isolation. Designed to provide hope,
by understanding the grieving process and encouraging
personal growth.
Call Fr. John Boivin at 312-787-8040 for more information.
“From Hurt. Through Healing. To Hope.”
You’ve helped in the past. Will you help again?
The poor will always be with us, Jesus said in Matthew’s
Gospel. As we live and work and visit in this
neighborhood, we see so many people in need. And of all
the needs, food is the most basic.
Our parish has had a long and effective commitment to
addressing the need for food. Numerous appeals, including
our recent Food Drive, are built into our parish life. As we
have asked your help in the past, we are asking it again.
Every Thursday and Friday evening, our parish feeds 210
people each night. This program is sponsored by our
Human Concerns Commission and served by volunteers
since 2006. This outreach depends totally on cash
donations; no parish funds have ever been spent.
As costs increase to supply meals to our guests, this column
is to ask you to consider making a donation. Some donors
are weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually. Some are onetime only donors. Donations range from $5 to $1,000;
every penny of every donation is spent only on these meals.

During Holy Week, the Cathedral Music Ministry of Holy Name Cathedral, including the cathedral
choral ensembles, will be an integral part for this most important season of the liturgical year. This
includes Passion Sunday, the Chrism Mass, Tenebrae (see information below), Holy Thursday
(Lauds at 8 am and the Mass of the Lord’s Supper), Good Friday (Lauds and Good Friday
services), Holy Saturday Lauds, the Great Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday.
Tenebrae – Wednesday, April 1, 2015, 7:00 p.m., – Enter into the church’s most holy time with the
Tenebrae service. The word “tenebrae” is Latin for “darkness: or “shadows”. The purpose of the
Tenebrae service is to recreate the important aspects of the passion story. The Tenebrae service
begins with the cathedral lit and with many candles on a centrally-placed candelabrum. As the
chants and readings progress, candles are gradually extinguished. In the darkened cathedral, all the
lights and candles are extinguished until only a lone candle remains. Towards the end of the
service, the Christ candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil over good.
At the very end, a loud noise is made (the strepitus) symbolizing the earthquake at the time of his
death (Matthew 27) and his resurrection.
The hidden candle is then restored to its place, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.
This intense and beautiful service which includes the singing of Psalms, Hymns, choral music by
Estonian sacred music composer, Arvo Pärt, Paul Nicholson, Roger T. Petrich, H. Ricardo
Ramirez and Anton Buckner; and readings from scripture such as the Lamentations of Jeremiah.
A noted feature of the Tenebrae service is the singing of Psalm 50 (51), Miserere, also called
"Miserere mei, Deus" (Latin: "Have mercy on me, O God") by Italian composer Gregorio Allegri
composed during the reign of Pope Urban VIII, probably during the 1630s, for use in the Sistine
Chapel during matins, as part of the exclusive Tenebrae service on Wednesday and Friday of Holy
Week. It was the last of twelve falsobordone Miserere settings composed and chanted at the service
since 1514 and the most popular: at some point, it became forbidden to transcribe the music and it
was only allowed to be performed at those particular services, adding to the mystery surrounding it.
Writing it down or performing it elsewhere was punishable by excommunication. The setting that
escaped from the Vatican is actually a conflation of verses set by Gregorio Allegri around 1638 and
Tommaso Bai (also spelled "Baj"; 1650–1718) in 1714.
The Miserere is written for two choirs and a Schola (from members of the Cathedral Singers)
singing the chants between the choral sections. It is generally accepted to be one of the finest
examples of Renaissance polyphony to survive to the present day.
Part of Psalm 50 (51) is noted here:
Have mercy upon me, O God, after Thy great goodness: according to the multitude of Thy mercies
do away mine offences. Wash me thoroughly from my wickedness: and cleanse me from my sin.
For I acknowledge my faults: and my sin is ever before me. Against You, You alone have I sinned,
and done this evil in your sight: that You might be justified when you give sentence and be without
reproach when you judge…..

April Speaker
Friday, April 10, 2015 Noon to 1:15 PM
Mr. Richard J. Gannotta
President, Northwestern Memorial Hospital
Senior Vice President,Northwestern Memorial Healthcare
Who will address the issue;
"Grabbing the Mindfulness Needed for a
High Reliability Life"
Over and above the intricacies of health care today, Richard
Gannotta has another passion, namely mindfulness and high
reliability. Mindfulness is about living in the moment. It is a
quality of mind that notices, in the present moment, without
judging or trying to fix or change anything. It is a willingness to
see things as they are, not what you want them to be.
High reliability organizations are those in a complex working
environment that operate safely and reliably in the face of hazards
that can harm hundreds of employees. Why is this important to
us? It has immediate implications not only for our work
environments, but also for our family systems of which all of us
are a part.
You will find this to be a fascinating First Friday Club lunch on
the second Friday in April, the 10th, when Richard Gannotta
develops these ideas that are an important part of his leadership
style and leadership skills.
Richard Gannotta began as President of Northwestern Memorial
Hospital on February 14, 2014. Mr. Gannotta began as COO of
Duke Raleigh Hospital in 2006. He was President before
becoming President there. He served in a variety of roles at Wake
Med in Raleigh for 12 years culminating as Administrator and
Senior Vice President at Wake Meds Flagship Hospital in
Raleigh, NC.
Mr. Gannotta is also a nurse practitioner and was on the faculty
for the Duke School of Nursing and Health Leadership Program.
He earned a doctorate in health administration from the Medical
University of South Carolina.

Back by popular demand, the Holy Name Cathedral Young Adult Board is
partnering with Catholic Church Tours to host the seventh annual Holy Thursday
Dinner and Pilgrimage. We will be hosting a dinner after the Mass of the Lord's

seven churches in the Chicago area. For those who have previously joined us on
this wonderful pilgrimage, we will be going to a different set of churches than we
went to last year so you will see something new this year. For those who have
never been, this is wonderful opportunity to explore other Catholic churches in
Chicago and acquire an appreciation for the history of Catholics in this great city.
We encourage everyone who can make it to attend the dinner as well as the
pilgrimage itself.
Tickets are $23 for the dinner, $25 for the pilgrimage, and $48 for both. The
pilgrimage will be capped at 95 people and the dinner at 55 individuals. This event
has consistently sold out over the past few years, so we encourage you to buy
