“The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.”
May 10, 2015
Sixth Sunday of Easter
Dear Parishioners:
Congratulations to all the Mothers of the community on this
Mothers’ Day weekend. The masses for the next week are offered
for you. Mothers are very special people and it is good to take a
day to honor them. All of us owe so much to our mothers. They gave birth to
us, they nurture us, they clothe us, and they feed us. Even once we are raised,
they continue to support us. In the case of my own mother, who died in 2001, I
attribute my love of cooking to her. About cooking, she taught me that you
could have a great meal if you put some care and attention to details. She also
taught me an appreciation for good art and good music. When she went to a
nursing home, she left me her silver, china, and crystal, which I still have
today.
It is good that we may prepare a meal for our mothers or purchase some
flowers or candy or some other gift. We need to remember, even after we leave
home, that we need to honor them throughout the year. Just as in the gospel of
John, Jesus tells his disciples: “Live on in my love; love one another as I have
loved you.” The ultimate testimony that we pay to a mother is to live on in
their love and to share their love with others.
Even if you have lost your mother, as I have, it is important to recall the memories that you have and to thank God once again for your mother. Happy
Mother’s Day to all the mothers of our parish!
Sincerely yours in Christ,

Upcoming Feasts
In the next few weeks, the church celebrates some significant milestones in the
history of salvation. On May 17th, we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord. The
Ascension celebrates the transition of Jesus from this world to heaven once again.
When he leaves, Jesus imparts to all disciples the mission to continue the work that
he began.
On May 24th, Memorial Day weekend, we celebrate the feast of Pentecost. In the
Acts of the Apostles, Luke records of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the
Apostles in the upper room and the empowerment of each of them. In one sense,
they are given the tools to go out and preach a message of Good News. According
to St. Luke, everything the church does, is done through the power and direction of
the Holy Spirit.
On May 31st, we celebrate the feast of the Trinity. The feast day recalls the most
basic and fundamental belief of Christianity, i.e., our belief in one God and three
persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is a difficult belief to understand. It is also
the weekend that we celebrate our annual Multicultural Mass at 11:00AM with food
and entertainment afterwards. It is important to remember that our church is made
up of many cultures and peoples from different backgrounds. I hope many of you
can attend the luncheon.

This Week’s Stewardship Note
Today is the Sixth Sunday of Easter!
Alleluia! Alleluia!
“Go and bear fruit that will remain.”
Jesus, John 15:17b
Jesus says this at the end of the Vine and Branches
discourse in John’s version of the Last Supper. As
branches on the vine, we need to bear fruit that
will remain. As stewards of the Church, we need
to act in ways that fosters the health of the
Church. But how is that? Jesus says simply, “love
one another.”
In the first reading, God is working on Peter. He
has given Peter a vision upturning Jewish dietary
laws with the admonition, “What God has made
clean, you are not to call profane.” Now Peter has
accepted an invitation to the house of Cornelius, a
Roman centurion, where he realizes that Jesus is
for the faith-filled world, not just for Jews.
On May 31st we celebrate that great revelation.
Save the date for the 4th Annual Multicultural
Mass and Lunch. This year we will be celebrating the cultures of Asia. Today we are beginning
our recruitment of cooks! If you are Asian and
have a favorite family recipe, please sign up!
If you are not but love to cook Asian cuisine,
please sign up, too! If you missed the table in the
vestibule, please email Carole Nowak at
[email protected].
The Annual Catholic Appeal has begun! Our goal
this year is $180,000. So far we have had gifts and
pledges totaling $49,120. This appeal supports the
Church in Western Washington
by supporting the benefits of all
church employees, the administration of Catholic schools, the
recruitment, retirement and health care of diocesan priests, CYO camps and athletics and much,
much more!
Any gifts received over our goal will come back
to the parish. Father dedicated the 2014 rebate
to replacing the bleachers in the gym, and I
mentioned last week that we were $20,000 short.
Since then Father received a $10,000 gift that he
dedicated to the bleachers, so we are now only
$10,000 short. This year’s rebate will first go to
new bleachers and anything over that will go to
repairing the lower parking lot. Those bleachers
are now 34 years old. New ones will have places
for wheel chairs and will have handrails. They
will also have motors to extend and retract the
benches. Please support the Appeal and let’s get
new bleachers!

ADULT FAITH FORMATION: Last Sunday a young man from our parish was ordained a deacon at St. John
Chrysostom Byzantine Catholic church in Seattle. Rev. Michael Bezruchka, the new transitional deacon, will
most likely be ordained a priest in a few months by his eparch, the eastern rite title for what we call a bishop.
We Catholics tend to know very little about the 23 Eastern Rite Catholic Churches in union with Rome.
Deacon Michael’s Ruthenian branch of the Byzantine Catholic Church is the eastern most branch of the
Byzantine Catholic Church. It has an ancient liturgy, and roots in and around the Carpathian Mountains where
present day Hungary, Slovakia, and Ukraine meet. Vatican II encouraged the 23 Eastern Rite Catholic communities to preserve their liturgy with, in this case, its ties to Sts. Cyril and Methodius who brought Christianity to
their region in the 9th century.
So the ordination of Deacon Michael Bezruchka is both a chance to be grateful for the new deacon and an
opportunity to learn about our fellow brothers and sisters in the United States who are members of the 23 eastern rite Catholics united to the pope, and with us.

MARRIAGE & FAMILY LIFE
Daily Prayer This Week
Marriage is a journey, it is not a
destination! It is a daily journey of each
husband and wife towards one another in
love. Join us May 30th and 31st for a
Living in Love marriage retreat at St.
Pius X Parish in Mountlake Terrace.
As Fr. Haydock said recently at the Marriage
Celebration Mass, “a happy marriage takes work.”
A Living in Love marriage retreat will give you
tools to help make your journey together easier and
joy filled. For answers to your questions and to
register for the retreat please call Bruce and Judy
White at 425 771 9003 or Dan and Carolina
Keenan at 425 743 3376.
We sometimes keep the idea of the Trinity firmly in
our heads, rather than move it to our hearts. Our
logical, practical minds cannot make sense out of
three persons in one God.
But clearly this week Jesus wants us to have some
sense of what the Trinity is - a continuation of the
seamless love and identity between him and the
Father. It is the Spirit of that love between them that
lives on in us today, guiding us and helping us to
follow the message of Jesus' life. It is that Spirit of
Jesus that is with us in each of the difficult and
joyous moments of our days.
Jesus invites us to discover the power of the Spirit in
our lives through an awareness of “the Advocate”
supporting us each day. Jesus encourages us in the
same kind of intimate relationship he has with the
Father. The startling idea of this close, personal
conversation one might have with a parent, models
for us how we can speak to him.
If we feel tongue-tied or don't know where to begin,
that is exactly the place to start. Each morning as we
awaken, we can speak from our hearts.
Loving Jesus, I'm not sure how to do this. I can feel
in my heart an emptiness or longing for something
deeper in my relationship, but I don't always know
where to begin. Help me to open my heart to you
this day, and to carry with me the sense of how
much you love me and how much you want this kind
of personal relationship with me.
Let me feel your Spirit present with me as I face the
challenges of the day and let me live my life this day
as your follower, in the peace of your love.
Easter is here and Spring has arrived. The
trees are blooming, the grass and air are
fresh. New life is all around. If you want
to bring new life to your marriage, then
apply to the next Worldwide Marriage
Encounter Weekend. Experience the joy of a
Weekend at Sheraton Bellevue Hotel, Bellevue,

Hope and Healing After Abortion
“There is no amount of money which can pay for the
value of this retreat. It is powerful to change hearts
overwhelmed and tired by their burdens. Many,
many, many thanks and blessings.”
-Testimony from Retreatant
It is a simple prayer and one that we can remember
as we go about our day, head to a meeting, stand in
the kitchen or fold laundry. It is not complicated to
have a closer relationship with God but it takes
focus. And always, we can end our day with a
simple prayer of thanks for the many blessings of
the day.

Moving forward, only parishoners’ names will continue to be on the “out loud” list after the three weeks.
We understand that many are still seriously ill and we will continue to be praying for them in the “Book of
the Sick” which is placed on the altar for all the masses. Unfortunately, when we get so many requests, we
can’t continue to announce them all each week. We are striving to find an equitable solution to the situation.
We appreciate your patience and understanding!

Parish Finance Council: I am looking for members, both men and women, for the Parish Finance Council.
The parish needs to raise about $4 million a year to make the budget, the debt service, and the mandated
appeals such as the Annual Catholic Appeal. The Council advises on the budget, prepares an annual report,
and reviews capital purchases. A background in accounting, financial planning or human resources is helpful
to serve on the Council. If you are interested, please contact Fr. Haydock.
