O ur Par ish M ission S tatement
We, Holy Rosary Church, established in 1913, are led by the Dominican Friars and are dedicated to
Our Lady’s honor. Coming from different backgrounds and from across the area, we gather to worship
and glorify God with the reverent celebration of the Mass, the sacraments, and the venerable traditions
of our Catholic faith. Faithful to the Magisterium and our love of God and neighbor, we strive to live
and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We gratefully return to God all that He has given us by using our
gifts and talents to build up His Church, support our parish family, and welcome all who yearn for Christ.

Reflection on the Sunday Scriptures
Children have marvelous ways of expressing themselves without the
mask layers that adults sometimes use in their language. I asked a group of
children once in my former parish in Louisiana how did Jesus go to Heaven and they responded: In a rocket!! That will teach me about asking big
theological questions.
And so we come today to the celebration of another link in the Easter time, the celebration of the Ascension of the Lord Jesus to Heaven, to
the right hand of the Father. It is a transferred Feast from this past Thursday, the 40th day after the resurrection of Jesus when we read in the Book
of Acts (1: 3) that Jesus appeared to his disciples in the course of forty days
speaking to them about the kingdom of God. This time was one of affirmation of his friends, shaken no doubt, from the events of the past. One can
glimpse a sense of intimacy as he tells them not to be afraid, that his presence is real and that he will be with them.
And so in the presence of his disciples “Jesus was lifted up before their
eyes” (Acts: 1: 9) and was taken up to Heaven to the right hand of the Father. That is what the Christian Community celebrates today, trying at the
same time to glean the meaning of it for Jesus and for us.
For Jesus it was the end of the cycle. Today Jesus comes full circle. He
came into a world steeped in sin and dominated by Satan and leaves the
world redeemed by his death and resurrection. WOW. What an extraordinary feat!! His main message when He came to earth was to preach about
the Kingdom of God the Father. And in the course of this preaching and
because of it he would be put to death. But his resurrection gave meaning
to his life, his mission, his legacy, his teaching. The Apostles, later, imbued
with the promised Holy Spirit, will carry the mission of the Kingdom of
God to all the corners of the world.
We too, we are the disciples of Jesus in our time and age. We have been
gifted with that same grace and are privileged to be part of the mission of
God in Jesus, the Head. That mission is being realized in and by his members, offering our lives and our service for those who have not appropriated for themselves the redeeming grace of our Lord. We do that by our holiness, by our fidelity and by being counter cultural in this world, and in this
country, where others, including leaders, subversively undermine the tenets
and the teachings of Jesus in the name of the so called personal freedoms
or personal rights. These are purely artificial and do not emanate from the
natural rights given to us by God.
The Ascension of the Lord Jesus to Heaven is the prelude and prologue
of our own final destiny/destination. Where He has gone we hope to follow. We are just pilgrims on the way always. We will be called home soon
enough, to be with our loved ones, our Mother Mary, all the saints. We will
have gone full circle too, like Jesus.
Jesus was lifted up and went to the right hand of the Father in Heaven.
Can you think of a moment or moments when you have been lifted up after
you had been down and almost out? I am sure you have many. Ask yourself: Who needs to be lifted up around us and in our community? Big questions.
The Bread we eat at this Eucharist today is the prelude of the eternal
Banquet in Heaven. Such Bread is the “energy booster” that helps us daily to
be lifted up and that will carry our “Rocket” to fly Home.
May the peace of Easter be with you always.

Pope Francis has proclaimed 2015
the Year of Consecrated Life
Give Peace and Joy! Be a Disciple.
Today as we celebrate the feast of the Ascension we are reminded that Christ’s saving
work on earth continues through his disciples…and now through us. When we give to
the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace, and joy into our hearts, into our lives, and
into the hearts of those who are in need. Please join us in the saving work of the Lord.
Volunteers are needed to meet and help those who seek our assistance. Be a disciple
of Christ and join the St. Vincent de Paul Society here at Holy Rosary Parish. You can
also help by your prayers and contributions. The Poor Box is located in the rear of the
church. We should all be aware of the joy in giving to the Lord. Please call our help line
713-529-2156 if in need or to help in this ministry. Thank you.
Call 713-529-2156 if in need of assistance or if you would like more information about the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
The Lord bless thee and keep thee: the Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be
gracious unto thee: the Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

Stewardship Series
It’s hard to believe that this column has been
running for about six months now! For those of
you, who have been reading, thank you! To quickly
summarize these last months, the concept of
stewardship has been introduced as being a
disciple’s response to God out of gratitude for all
the good we have received. We have discussed that
discipleship and stewardship go hand in hand –
it is not possible to be a disciple without being a
good steward. We have also discussed that
stewardship involves sharing of one’s time, talent,
and treasure, and that Holy Rosary is arguably
most in need of parishioners willing to share their
time.
Since the time the stewardship column
started, a lot has happened within our parish. Holy
Rosary has crafted a mission statement and
pastoral plan. Many parishioners attended town
hall meetings to help with these all-important
tasks. Thank you to all who participated; your
presence and input were invaluable. If you have
not yet seen the parish mission statement, it is on
the front cover of each week’s bulletin and is also
on the website, www.holyrosaryparish.org.
Our mission statement tells everyone who
we are and what we want to do as a church. It
serves as a compass to guide all of our activities
and it gives us goals to work towards. With the
important work of creating the mission statement
now complete, and with the monumental tasks
ahead of us that will be necessary to accomplish
our mission; this is a good point to reboot this
column. What better place to start than by
reviewing our mission?
St. Dominic

We, Holy Rosary Church, established in 1913, are led
by the Dominican Friars and are dedicated to Our
Lady’s honor. Coming from different backgrounds
and from across the area, we gather to worship and
glorify God with the reverent celebration of the Mass,
the sacraments, and the venerable traditions of our

the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We gratefully return to
God all that He has given us by using our gifts and
talents to build up His Church, support our parish
family, and welcome all who yearn for Christ.
Take some time this week to reflect on
the mission statement, what is says, and what it
challenges us to do. In the coming months, there
will be activities and tasks within our parish that
call us to rise up to these challenges. A ministry
fair will be held, a stewardship council will be
formed, and a host of other things will take place
as we put our mission statement into action. If
you can share your time to help build up this
parish, there will be many opportunities to do
so.
As we have begun a reboot of this
column by presenting the mission statement,
know that every stewardship article you read
going forward has a purpose – to help
encourage the discipleship necessary to
accomplish the mission of our parish. Our next
column will begin that effort by discussing the
spirituality of stewardship in terms of our
Christian identity, our trust in God, our
gratitude towards God, and our love for God.
Have a blessed week, and continue rejoicing in
our Lord’s resurrection from the dead.
