VBS have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy might be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another.” (Jn 15:9-17) Note from the Pastor Fr. Kubista... Air: The air we breathe is very important. The air provides mostly nitrogen and oxygen which are essential things for life, just as the Holy Spirit is essential in the spiritual life. Air movements help move things around and the Holy Spirit, who is likened to a wind, helps move us and encourage us. We need the Holy Spirit who is the Breath of Life and allows us to share in the very Life of God. We are called to be good stewards of the air that we breathe and to be aware of various things which can inhibit us from flourishing as human beings. We thank God for the gift of air and especially the gift of the Holy Spirit, and ask that He would help us to keep our air clean and pure especially for future generations and allow the Spirit to move us closer to Christ. What is in air? “The common name air is given to the atmospheric gases used in breathing and photosynthesis. By volume, dry air contains 78.09% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.039% carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases. Air also contains a variable amount of water vapor, on average around 1% at sea level, and 0.4% over the entire atmosphere. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmosphere_of_Earth) We see how nitrogen is the element which is most abundant in the air we breathe, it is very important in the life cycle of all of us. “Nitrogen is necessary for all known forms of life on Earth.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrogen_cycle) Nitrogen is foundational for life and is in the fundamental building blocks of life. “It is a component in all amino acids, as incorporated into proteins, and is present in the bases that make up nucleic acids such as RNA and DNA. In plants, much of the nitrogen is used in chlorophyll molecules, which are essential for photosynthesis and further growth.” (ibid) Nitrogen, though, is not mostly used in its direct form but rather has to be processed or transformed especially for plants. “Nitrogen gas (N2) is the largest constituent of the Earth's atmosphere, but this form is relatively nonreactive and unusable by plants [& animals]. Chemical processing or natural fixation (through processes such as bacterial conversion—see rhizobium) are necessary to convert gaseous nitrogen into compounds such as nitrate or ammonia which can be used by plants.” (ibid). Nitrogen, which is essential for life, then has to be transformed into a usable form which is very interesting. Another medium has to take nitrogen and transform it into a usable form for life especially for plants. In the spiritual realm, we just don’t become children of God on our own, we are not adopted sons and daughters of God on our own but need some Person who transforms us or adopts us. The Person (Agent) which transforms and adopts us is the Holy Spirit. We need the transforming power of the Spirit to be founded and alive in Christ. We hear how from the beginning in Genesis, the Holy Spirit, who made us come alive as we hear in Genesis: “the LORD God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being.” (Gen 2:7) One could say that this was a spiritual birth; the life of God came to Adam who was filled with the Holy Spirit and shared the life of God. It is a reminder to us of the power of the Holy Spirit and how we are depended on Him to be transformed into Christ and continue to be converted, changed, and grow into Christ. We have accept into our souls the Holy Spirit who will allow us to be more converted into Christ, who transforms us, and builds up in us the Life of God. Another important element in the air is oxygen. With oxygen, there is a direct connection as we breathe this element in and our lungs transfer it into our blood; we need oxygen to survive and to READINGS FOR THE WEEK help our body and its needs. We are dependent on plants to Monday: Acts 16:11-15; Ps 149:1b-6a, 9b; give off oxygen and use up carbon dioxide and we are Jn 15:26 -16:4a dependent them for nitrogen. Plants help sustain us for we Tuesday: Acts 16:22-34; Ps 138:1-3, 7c-8; need plants to breathe but also we need them to eat. The Jn 16:5-11 Wednesday: Acts 17:15, 22 — 18:1; Ps oxygen we get then goes throughout the entire body; it feeds 148:1-2, 11-14; Jn 16:12-15 and nourishes the entire body. Thursday: Acts 1:1-11; Ps 47:2-3, 6-9; The Holy Spirit nourishes our soul for the Holy Spirit Eph 1:17-23, Mk 16:15-20 Friday: Acts 18:9-18; Ps 47:2-7; Jn 16:20is the Breath of Life, we need to Spirit to sustain and nourish 23 us, we need to breathe in the Spirit, to follow the Word from Saturday: Acts 18:23-28; Ps 47:2-3, 8-10; whom the Holy Spirit proceeds. We are to follow the Jn 16:23b-28 commands that our Father has given to us, to do His will, and Sunday: Acts 1:1-11; Ps 47:2-3, 6-9; Eph 1:17- 23, Mk 16:15-20 when we allow the Spirit to help guide and move us, we are PAPAL PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR May alive in the Spirit and share in the breath of God. The Spirit Care for the Suffering: that, rejecting enlivens us, the Spirit helps us to get over the deadness to sin, the culture of indifference, we may care for our neighbors who suffer, especially and brings us Life; He gives life to our soul, to our spirit. the sick and the poor. “Then he said to me: Prophesy to the spirit, prophesy, son of Openness to Mission: that Mary's man, and say to the spirit: Thus says the Lord GOD: From intercession may help Christians in the four winds come, O spirit, and breathe into these slain secularized cultures be open to proclaiming Jesus. that they may come to life. I prophesied as he told me, and the spirit came into them; they came alive and stood upright, a . vast army.” (Ez 37:9-10) Let us deeply breathe in the Holy Spirit to fill the lungs of our souls and allow the oxygen to move us on to a greater oneness in Christ. Another important thing which happens in the air is the wind. “Wind is caused by differences in the atmospheric pressure. When a difference in atmospheric pressure exists, air moves from the higher to the lower pressure area, resulting in winds of various speeds. “ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind) Wind takes what it has and moves it into the space in which it blows. When the wind blows, it can purify the air, moving over water, oceans or through trees or over the grasses and it picks up things which can help us. Have you even noticed after a rain how fresh the air is or after the grass is mowed how good it smells or near the ocean, the fresh smell of the ocean breeze; these smells are pleasing and can help move one to grow in spirit, to be uplifted and energized. The fresh air, the things which the air picks up indeed can enliven us and help us, the goodness in the air can move us to God. I think this is so important to remember that in general, God made creation to move us towards Him, the good things He made help us find Him and we can never let go of this. God is guiding His creation towards Him. In the spiritual reality, it is the Spirit who is the wind for our souls. The Spirit wants to move us from low levels in our faith to higher realms; the Spirit wants to move more of the Life of God into our souls, to be more like Christ, to grow in holiness. We hear how on Pentecost the Spirit is in the wind. “And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, * and it filled the entire house in which they were.” (Acts 2:2) The Holy Spirit wants to move us like He did for those in the upper room. The Holy Spirit wants to pick us up, to move us ahead, to encourage us, to strengthen us, to help us to remain in hope and to let go of things which are getting in the way of us moving closer to Christ. We can ask how is the Spirit blowing in our lives, what are the smells and movements we experience from the Spirit? God bless you.
