COMMUNITY EDUCATION ADVISORY COUNCIL
The Community Education Advisory Council represents the
citizens of District #0001. The council meets quarterly to
help identify, coordinate, and evaluate the education,
recreational, social, and cultural opportunities for district
residents of all ages. Council members welcome your ideas

Registration should be completed at least five
days prior to the first class meeting.
LATE REGISTRATION… Please contact
Community Education to check on the possibility
of late registration. Do not simply show up at
the class—it may be full or have been cancelled.
CLASSES… are filled on a first-come, first-serve
basis with payment. All classes have a minimum
number. If we do not reach that minimum, we
will call you.
EARLY REGISTRATION… with payment assures
that classes will be held and that your place is
reserved.
PHONE CALLS… do not reserve your place in a
class. Your registration is complete only when
you submit a registration form and payment.
YOU DO NOT NEED… to be an Aitkin School
District resident to attend Community Education
classes here.

*There will be no confirmation of registration. Assume you are
in a class unless we notify you of cancellation.
*All fees will be refunded if a class is cancelled due to insufficient
enrollment or if the class is filled.
*If you cancel your enrollment at least 48 hours before start time,
your money will be refunded less a $3.00 handling fee. Cancellation
with less than 48 hours notice entitles you to a refund less a $5.00 fee.

Based Option for birth through age 3 and a
Home Based Option for ages 3 to 5. Parents
and teachers plan fun learning activities to do

are also available. We offer a Child Care
Option for ages 3 to 5.

2015 PASSPORT TO KINDERGARTEN CLASS
The Aitkin Children’s Center in partnership with staff from Rippleside will host a Passport to Kindergarten Class.
All children who plan to enter kindergarten in the fall of 2015 and their parents are invited to join us for this
class!! Enjoy activities together that will help parents and children prepare for the transition from early childhood
into kindergarten. Each class night will include a light meal served in the cafeteria. Don’t miss this opportunity to
meet other parents of incoming kindergarteners, tour kindergarten classrooms, work on school readiness skills, and
hear guest speakers.

Enrollment for School Readiness Preschool Classes for Fall of
2015 will open on Monday, April 27th at 7:30 am. Preregistration forms will be available starting the evening of April
16th at our Special Event. Completed forms will not be accepted prior to 7:30 am on Monday, April 27th. Children must be at
least 3 years old by September 1, 2015 to
attend regular preschool classes.

EXTRA! for kids

The EXTRA! morning program at Rippleside
Elementary School provides supervised care
for students K—6 from 7:00—8:15am. There
is a fee of $3/day and all students must be
registered in advance to attend. Students may
attend one day or as many days as needed.

information or to begin the enrollment
process for both before or after school care.
EXTRA! for kids is a school-age child care
program for K—6 grade students at Rippleside
Elementary School. To enroll your children in
EXTRA!, fill out an enrollment form and provide
contact information. Forms are available at
EXTRA! room or by the Rippleside office.
Once enrolled, you may register your children
by filling out a registration calendar and
submitting it with payment to the Rippleside
office. The cost is $3/hour per student, with
a minimum of $3 per session.
EXTRA! after school hours at Rippleside are
3:00—6:00pm. EXTRA! is open on days when
school is in session. It is also open on limited
holidays and non-school days.
We do not guarantee space for your children.
We will accept children on a first-come,
first-serve basis as space allows. A snack is

Aitkin County Public Health, local law
Enforcement, and Aitkin TZD are proud to
partner with the Minnesota Department of Public
Safety, as well as Alcohol and Gambling Division,
to provide Free Responsible Beverage Server
Training for alcohol license holders and their
employees.
This training is designed to promote the legal
and responsible sale and service of alcoholic
beverages. Attendees who complete this training
are more successful in stopping underage
drinking and in recognizing the signs of intoxication. You will learn the importance of alcohol
beverage laws, server responsibility, safe serving
practices, criminal and civil liability to servers,
and proper identification.
Most insurance providers offer an insurance
discount for attending this course; however,
license holders should verify with their provider
ahead of time. Special Event Training is available
for those volunteering at a community or church
festival.

Save the date! Now in its 18th year, Safety
Town is a program which teaches safety topics
to children with both hands-on and presented
information. Some topics include bike safety,
train and railroad safety, water safety, fire safety,
electrical safety, playground safety, and animal
safety, as many as many others.
All area children, ages 4—7, are invited to
attend this weeklong event. The program has two
different time frames so that material can be
presented appropriately for each age group. Each
day features a session in the “Safety Town”, which
is complete with kid-sized buildings, vehicles,
crosswalks, railroad crossings, and working
stoplights so that children can practice how to
be safe as both a driver and pedestrian.
The week wraps up with a Safety Fair, featuring
law enforcement vehicles, fire engines, electricity
presentations, and mounted police. Program fee
covers the whole week of classes and includes a
t-shirt for each child. Registration forms will be
available beginning April 1 and can be picked up
at the Rippleside office. Safety Town is
sponsored jointly by the Aitkin Women of Today
and Aitkin Community Education.

April 21—Straw Bale Gardening
Ron Ritter will haul a straw bale onto a canvas
in the library’s new presentation room for
demonstrations you can actually see! You will
get walked through this new and fun gardening
technique that Joel Karsten reincarnated! This
class pairs nicely with Straw Bale Gardens class
with Joel himself on March 7. Come check it out!
April 28—Enabled Gardening & International
Gardening Methods
Learn ways to enhance and extend your years
using new accessible tools along with tried and
true methods of enabled gardening. You will
learn how to garden differently, using age old
methods, as well as new modern methods—
Hugelkuter, bucket gardens, raised beds, permaculture gardens, and more.
May 5—Vertical Gardening
Growing vertically, not horizontally, will
save you time, space, and is easy to harvest!
Class will cover how you can grow vegetables,
flowers, and other plants in a limited space by
growing up. You will also learn about creating
a vertical garden to enhance different areas of
your landscape. If you have decided that a
traditional garden is too much work for you,
you can now create a vertical garden on your
patio or within a limited area!
May 12—Wetland Flowers
Learning about native plants for wetland
areas such as shorelines and rain gardens will
be the lively topic of this Native Plant class.
Plants for Sunny wetlands and shady wetlands
along with plants of differing heights will be
presented. Learn how to use native plants to
create a sustainable landscape in wet areas.
May 19—Perennial Foods for Aitkin:
Asparagus, Rhubarb, Winter Onions, Chives,
and Horseradish
Yes, you can learn to plant these crops once
and harvest them for many years to come.
Class will cover the different varieties available, learn how to successfully plant them, and
you’ll get some delicious recipes for your
enjoyment! These plants can be added to your
floral gardens to enhance your landscape, and
still be available as a food source.

“Launch into 4H”, will feature many activities,
such as hands-on workshops, outdoor recreation,

counselors and volunteers. Fees include transportation from Aitkin, lodging, meals, camp
