A student describes and explains the relationships between composer, responder, text and context in particular texts. 2. A student describes and explains relationships among texts. 4. A student demonstrates an understanding of the ways various textual forms, technologies and their media of production affect meaning. 6. A student engages with a wide range of texts to develop a considered and informed personal response. 10. A student analyses and synthesises information and ideas from a range of texts for a variety of purposes, audiences and contexts. Students will be required to write an Essay response to a question on the Elective: Political Voices. DESCRIPTION OF THE TASK In the essay response students must refer to their prescribed text and one related text. The prescribed text is any TWO of the following poems: - Bruce Dawe Bruce Dawe 1 “Homecoming” “Enter without so much as knocking” The related text is one of the following artworks supplied with this notification, including: - Pablo Picasso Salvador Dali Jack Bram Sylvia Plath ‘Guernica’ ‘The Face of War’ "We Have a Voice" Collage, 1960 You may bring in TEN QUOTES IN TOTAL from the poems into the examination, which must be signed by your English teacher as per instruction below. The artwork will be provided on the day of the exam. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE TASK METHOD OF SUBMISSION Complete a practice essay before the task as set by your teacher. Mid-Course Examination Block HEAD OF DEPARTMENT TEACHERS Mr Barker Mr Damalas Ms Colemen Late submissions (without a valid excuse) will receive a reduced mark if student is in Year 7 or 8, otherwise a mark of zero will apply. Work that is plagiarised will also receive a mark of zero. Sources that have been used in your Assessment need to be acknowledged in a Bibliography and / or the Assessment (see College Diary for instructions). Computer / printer malfunctions are not considered a valid excuse for submitting an Assessment late. 2 Guidelines • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Ensure that you have an understanding of the political voice in TWO poems and ONE artwork. Students should revise concepts pertaining to representations of the political voice, how the responder is positioned, context and how meaning is shaped through language in two poems AND the artwork. Students should revise class work on TWO poems. Students are permitted to discuss the artwork with their teacher. A practice essay question has been provided with this notification for each student to complete. Students will receive feedback on the artwork in the context of this practice essay. Students will be permitted to take up to 10 quotations from the poems into the examination. All quotations must be typed in Times New Roman Size 12 and be no longer than one sentence in length. No sub-headings, character headings or classification of any kind is permitted. Quotations that do not adhere to these guidelines will not be permitted into the examination. A hard copy of the quotations must be signed off by your teacher no later than Friday 8th May Period 4. No quotations will be signed after this date and therefore unsigned quotations will not be permitted into the exam room. If you are absent email them to your teacher. No other email will be accepted as it is the student’s responsibility to provide a hardcopy of their quotations to their teacher to sign. If quotations are forgotten on the day, you will NOT be permitted to share or borrow the quotations of others. Students are responsible for keeping their quotations. Teachers will not look after them. Students will be provided with the artwork on the day of the exam. Notes on the artwork CANNOT be taken into the exam. 5 minutes will be allocated for reading. No writing during this reading time. Students will have 45 minutes to write the essay in the exam block. Students must clearly indicate their candidate number and not identify their teacher. Students must have a balanced treatment of the texts in their essay. Assessment Marking Criteria: Students will be assessed on their ability to: • Discuss an essay question and reflect a comprehensive understanding of the political voice in the prescribed text and related text. • Demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which the political voice is represented through form, features and language and how they are positioned • Use appropriate form and language for the purpose of communication. This includes: essay structure, spelling, syntax, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation and paragraphing. Practise essay question: A political voice can be approached in distinctive and complex methods. 3 Discuss this view with detailed reference to your prescribed text and ONE other related text.
