Rota’s Garden – Urban Gardening is growing a green future 28. de Maio – 18. de Junho, 18H00 You like it fresh? No place to dig a garden? Growing plants in containers is an easy way to experience the flavour and freshness of home-grown vegetables, herbs and fruits. ABOUT THE WORKSHOP Gardening Urban Gardening is the practice of growing plants in containers or bags instead of planting them in the ground. Most vegetables actually grow really well in containers and by picking the right plants, we can create our own urban container garden and grow a fair amount of food in just a few pots. We are taking a look at urban farming, which offers to make our food as “local” as possible. By growing what we need near where we live, we decrease “the food miles” associated with long-distance transportation. We also get the freshest produce money can buy and we are encouraged to eat in season. Recycling Let´s change “waste” materials to our garden. During our first meeting we will plan our container/bags and after that we try to find interesting stuff to build our garden (e.g. rice bags, shopping bags, old pots, pallets, etc.) in Cascais. Here I need your knowledge about this neighborhood and you can also bring cool objects from home to reduce the time of search. It is also very important that we choose the plants and herbs we want to grow. to collect – the second meeting is about the recycling part of the workshop: We will try to find useful objects in restaurants, shops or at the port, beach and street. to build – at our third session we build the bags and containers we planned during our first meeting and we have to decorate them as well (mosaic, paintings or ropes). Additionally you have the possibility to create your garden box for your home. to plant – finally we are ready to plant our garden and see how we can place it in front of Rota Jovem. We also have to make a plan how we take care about the plants in future. I would like to develop ecological workshops with some craft parts. I have a working knowledge of gardening and I would like to create a “green” Rota with you! I really like the idea of self-sufficiency and so we keep our own chickens and take care of a garden at home.
