Heat Exhaustion
With the summer months here and the long hot days, it is important to keep in mind
the increased risk for heat exhaustion. Within the elderly population the body’s
ability to regulate sudden changes in temperature may be inhibited by prescription
medicines or chronic medical conditions. Therefore heat exhaustion can develop
with exposure to high temperatures and inadequate or unbalanced replacement of
fluids.
Signs and Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion:





Heavy sweating
Paleness
Muscle Cramps
Tiredness or Weakness
Dizziness or Fainting





Headache
Nausea or vomiting
Skin: may be cool and moist
Pulse rate: fast and weak
Breathing: fast and shallow
Here are some helpful tips for prevention:
Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages. (If your doctor generally limits the amount of
fluid you drink or has you on water pills, ask him how much you should drink when
the weather is hot. Also, avoid extremely cold liquids because they can cause cramps.)
 Rest
 Take a cool shower, bath, or sponge bath
 If possible, seek an air-conditioned environment. (If you don't have air
conditioning, consider visiting an air-conditioned shopping mall or public library to
cool off.)
 Wear lightweight clothing.
 If possible, remain indoors in the heat of the day.

IS IT REALLY A PROBLEM?
Sometimes the computer can be such a nuisance. It doesn’t do what we want it to do
when we want it to do it. That is aggravating, but we have to give it its due. Stop and
think about how it does provide us with so many opportunities. It is a ready source of
information, provides entertainment and affords us the opportunity to quickly interact
with friends and relatives all around the globe and that is all wonderful. It even
motivates us to think further on some topics. For me, that is the asset which is its
saving grace and makes it worth all the moments of frustration it can cause.
Each day one of my favorite sites sends me a Thought for the Day. These thoughts
stimulate people in different ways, depending on age, lifestyle or point of reference.
The example below, came to me just last week and it really set the wheels in motion in
my mind. Perhaps it will also spark some mental stimulation for you.
A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
If you break your neck, if you have nothing to eat, if your house is on fire, then you've
got a problem. Everything else is an inconvenience. Life is inconvenient. Life is lumpy. A
lump in the oatmeal, a lump in the throat, and a lump in the breast are not the same
kind of lump. One needs to learn the difference. -Robert Fulghum, author (b. 4 Jun
1937)
How many of the things you worry about are truly problems? Yes, I know each of us,
from time to time, has experienced our share of the genuine variety, but mainly the
other things we worry, stew and fret about on a daily basis are purely inconveniences.
Listen to the conversations around you. Sometimes people are so upset over what
seems to be almost nothing, but stop and think about it. When anyone magnifies an
inconvenience, it can be made into a problem in the mind. That affects any person’s
mental, physical and emotional health and wellbeing. When sensory overload occurs
and a person’s stress level increases, that is not good. I have often wondered, how
many minutes we subtract from our life or how much more uncomfortable our life
becomes by letting inconveniences escalate out of proportion to their actual importance? In fact, in so doing, we may be making even more inconveniences for
ourselves. We really do need to learn the difference and deal with the situation
accordingly.
Don’t let inconveniences take charge of your life and your health. Concentrate this
month on assuring your independence by assessing the issues you encounter, and
dealing with them. Try to think about how you can begin to successfully deal with
annoying inconveniences. Some people find relief when they talk to a friend about an
issue. For others, they find it releases the stress of an issue by putting all the facts
down on paper. Still others take a long walk or head for the Wellness Center to exercise
away their stress. Whatever helps you is important to use in order to keep your stress
level low. Your life may depend on it.

National Sugar Cookie Day
Sugar Cookie Day is all about releasing your inner child and honoring the
straightforward sugary-goodness of the traditional treat. Within the 1700s several
German settlers showed up in Pennsylvania, by mixing sugar, butter, eggs, vanilla
and sodium bicarbonate they produced an easy yet scrumptious food, now referred
to as Sugar Cookie. Obviously, the initial recipe never does not please, but now a
days it's very easy to give it a contemporary twist – adding sprinkles, chocolate
chips and frosting may be the simplest method to jazz up Sugar Cookies.
Dessert; Chocolate Mousse or Crème Brulee

Mustard & White Wine Braised Chicken $19.00

Chateau Morrisette Dinner
Saturday, July 18th @ 2:00 pm
Chateau Morrisette is the result of a love affair between the Morrisette family and
the rural Virginia countryside. In 1978, William, Nancy and David Morrisette
planted the first vines and the vision of Chateau Morrisette became a small reality.
Mrs. Nancy Morrisette stated in 1988 that the winery began as a hobby that soon
got out of hand.
Chateau Morrisette’s current vineyard acreage is thirteen acres planted in native
American Niagara grapes that the winery uses to produce Sweet Mountain Laurel
and Red Mountain Laurel.
Chateau Morrisette is both a relaxing and exciting experience for anyone who
enjoys fine wine, good food and natural surroundings. The dinner menu has a little
bit of everything on it and then some. Prices range from $10.00 for a Spring
Napoleon Salad to the Chateau Filet Mignon for $29.00.
While up in the mountains, you’ll go to Mabry Mill and the Trading Post.
You should be back to Homestead Hills by 9:30 pm.
