Foreword
Hi and welcome to this Quick Start Guide.
I realize that the internet is a fantastic place to gather information but it can also be a daunting process due to the sheer
volume of info that is out there, so I decided to put together this little Quick Start Guide for you so that you can spend
less time looking for info and more time playing your guitar. Let’s face it “playing” guitar is way more fun than trying to
“find” stuff to play online. And in the spirit of over delivering...
I decided to make a video series available that covers all these tips, tricks and techniques in greater detail which you can
access for free in our member’s area at www.rhythmguitarzero2hero.com/join This guide has been broken down into a
4-week process and if you will work through these videos and practice a minimum of 30 minutes per day you will most
certainly see some amazing results and be well on your way to becoming a very skilled guitarist.
The problem with most people is not that they can’t play guitar but rather that they don’t stick with the right program
long enough. So if you really want to learn how to play and stop wasting time looking for a quick fix on the internet this
guide will get you up and running without a doubt. In the member’s area you will be able to download your weekly
lessons, post any questions you might have on our moderated forum as well as get access to some other cool resources.
Did I mention this is all free of charge? No card details required, no catch! So the choice is up to you. I hope you take
advantage of this unique opportunity presented to you today and that you’ll be rocking out in no time at all!
Enjoy.

Basic Tips
In order to make the best use of your available time to practice follow these techniques :
• Remember, when it’s time to practice you need to practice and not play whatever comes to mind.
• Set aside a certain time of the day where you can have at least 30 min of uninterrupted practice.
• Write down what you’re working on and always know what you’re going to practice in advance to avoid aimless
noodling.
• Don’t get discouraged if you’re feeling like you’re not improving. As long as you practice consistently you will get
better.
• Speed is a by product of accuracy so always aim for accuracy rather than speed. By playing things to fast you will end
up making mistakes and start to develop bad habits. Slow is the path to fast!
• Balance is essential. Be focused and practice but leave time to mess around and do whatever you enjoy on the guitar!
The main reason you want to do this is to have some fun. So don’t sweat the small stuff and remember it’s all small
stuff. :-)
The campfire awaits!
Do you want to rock on stage?
Or just chill out at home jamming your guitar?

Chord Frames
Next we’ll be looking at chord boxes or sometimes referred as chord frames. These boxes are a graphical representation of the guitar neck used to indicate chord shapes.

What is T.A.B?
If you’ve ever searched for guitar lessons online before you would have come across tabs and you may be wondering
what the heck that’s all about? Let me explain. It is a graphic representation of the guitar neck. There are six lines, each
representing a string on the guitar. The top line being the high or thin E string and the bottom line being the low or thick
E string.
The numbers on the “strings” are the notes you’ll be fretting with your left hand. The zeroes represent open strings
hence the zero as there aren’t any fretted notes.

These are the names of the left and right hand fingers.

Tuning Your Guitar
Learning how to tune the guitar by ear is a very helpful exercise. Even though electronic tuners are used a lot more,
having a firm understanding of how to tune your guitar by ear can be very helpful and beneficial.
The fifth fret on the E string is an A note. The same as the open A string. Tune the A string to match the sound of the
fifth fret on the E string. It’s a good idea to loosen the string a bit before you tune it up to make sure you haven’t already
gone past the desired pitch. Snapping strings like this is what we want to avoid.
The fifth fret on the A string is a D note. The same as the open D string. Tune the D string to match the sound of the fifth
fret on the A string.
The fifth fret on the D string is a G note. The same as the open G string. Tune the G string to match the sound of the fifth
fret on the D string.

The fourth fret on the G string is a B note. The same as the open B string. Tune the B string to match the sound of the
fourth fret on the G string.
The fifth fret on the B string is an E note. The same as the open E string. Tune the E string to match the sound of the fifth
fret on the B string.
Your first E string and sixth E string should now also be the same. Strum an E chord to double check your tuning.
Adjustments can be made while holding down the chord with your left
hand and making the
necessary tweaks with your right hand.
Chords
So now that you have the basics down let’s start by learning some chords. First up is A major and we’ll look at 2 possible
fingerings for this one. Use the one that you find the easiest.

Left and Right Hand
Strumming Hand
Cool now that you can play a few chords let’s get things moving along by applying the right hand technique known as
strumming. Before we get into that let’s look at how you should hold the pick.
This is the sign used for a downstroke
This is the sign used for a upstroke
Try these 2 simple rhythms. Your right hand will move in a consistent down, up fashion and in the first example you’ll
be missing the strings every time your hand goes up. Try holding down the A chord while strumming with your right
hand.
Next up we have 2 more chords, E major and D major.

Chord Pairs
Now that you have a few chord shapes down along with two basic strumming patterns we can start to play some basic
chord pairs. Remember to take it slowly and strive for accuracy rather than speed.
3 Chord Trick! A.K.A the I IV V Progression
You might have heard about the 3 chord trick before. If not let me explain. Countless songs have been written using only
three chords and if you can learn to play these 3 chords, which you know by now in the key of A, you can play all these
songs! So give it a go and see if it sounds familiar?
Now that you have the three chord trick down in A you probably can’t wait to get your hands onto some more chords?
Well in that case here you go, G major and C major for your strumming pleasure.

Minor Madness
Minor Chords
Let’s learn a few minor chord shapes shall we? Minor chords are sad and darker sounding chords and they sound great
when used in conjunction with the more bright and upbeat sounding major chords. Check out E minor and A minor. Did
you spot the fact that E minor looks like E major without the first finger? And A minor looks exactly like E major except
it’s played a string lower. Try and spot these things...

As always some chord pairs to get these new shapes down.
Sing a song...
Time for a song!
This is the chord progression for the famous Bob Dylan tune, “Knocking on Heaven’s Door.”
Time for another song!
Let’s look at the chord progression for the classic song “Stand By Me” written by Ben E. King.

Many of these folk style rhythm guitar pieces uses the same type of chords and very similar rhythms. With that in mind I
thought I’d include a couple more progressions.
