SERIES OF EARTHQUAKES
By Tony Lee1
Last week I met the pastor of the Little Flock Church. Based on all the recent series of
earthquakes, the latest being in Nepal with two major quakes and hundreds of after-shocks, he
felt that the Lord is coming back soon.

During the past decade, we have seen major earthquakes and tsunamis in Aceh and
Fukushima. Obviously there were many tragedies, deaths and heart-breaking stories. But I
observed that in the aftermath of the Aceh and Sendai disasters, there was an openness to the
message of Christ. My prayer is that the Nepalese hearts will also open soon.

During the past years, OC has sent Indian missionaries and church planters to Nepal. We have
also been actively involved in training local pastors. Now the Naga church is mobilizing teams
to assist in the food distribution, reconstruction and “to share the love of Jesus”.
ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING (ACM)
The 11th ACM will be conducted today after the worship
service. The registration and voting procedures have been
emailed to all members on 19 May. After the meeting,
please proceed to the Fellowship Hall for lunch.
I will not speculate when Christ is coming back. According to Matthew 24, wars, conflicts,
earthquakes, famines and persecution will intensify - all these are the beginning of birth pains.
What is crucial is the teaching in Romans 8:20: “For the creation was subjected to frustration,
not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation
itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the
children of God.” So the end will come when the Gospel is preached to all (Matthew 24:14).
Let me quote an email dated 8/5/2015 from my team mate:
“Please continue to pray for Nepal. Today, a second earthquake of a magnitude of 7.3
on the Richter scale hit Nepal in Dolakha district. Dolakha is just east of Sindhupalchok
where some of the worst devastation already occurred. This is really difficult news to
add on to what had already happened.
I spoke to our teammate on the ground, Rev. Demo (our Naga missionary), who was in
Dolakha when the earthquake hit. He and one of our partner churches had just finished
distributing aid and food supplies to villagers in need. They reported that just after they
finished distributing the rice and other aid as the villagers were on their way back to
their tents, the earthquake struck. According to Brother Demo, most of the remaining
houses in Dolakha collapsed.
On Thursday, we have a second OC team and a team of four from Reach Global arriving
in Nepal for two purposes. The team will be doing trauma counseling training to equip
local church leaders and members to counsel those struggling with fear and trauma. As
well, we have begun a plan to distribute more lasting shelters made from tin and
bamboo to help people through the rainy season. Dolakha is already one of our target
districts. The team will also be getting this plan moving and distribution underway. I will
write more about that soon. Obviously, the need for temporary shelters has just gone up
- we've heard news already from Sindhupalchok that most of the remaining houses
there have collapsed as well.
I do not know at this point about additional casualties or injuries as the phone was cut
off during my conversation with Brother Demo. I do know that prior to this earthquake,
more than 280,000 houses had been destroyed and this will certainly add to that
number.”
Let us give generously to help the suffering people in Nepal. Most importantly pray that God
will open the hearts of the people to hear the message of Christ.

ASSISTANT PASTORS AT HPC The EDC is pleased to
announce that Daniel Lee will join the HPC staff ministry
team with effect from 16 June 2015. We warmly welcome
him and ask that you uphold him in prayer and give him
your support as he answers God’s call to serve in our
church.
As we welcome Daniel, we also gratefully acknowledge the
contributions of Lawrence Khoo, who has been overseeing
the Youth and Young Adults ministry. In view of the pastoral
nature of Lawrence’s and Daniel’s services, the EDC has
resolved that theologically-trained ministry staff on the
ordination track for the English Presbytery will be accorded
the title “Assistant Pastor”. We are blessed that Lawrence
and Daniel can minister in areas such as counselling,
visitation, preaching of the word, etc. We value and
appreciate their efforts, as they work with us to become a
loving community of disciples and servant leaders, within
and outside our church.
