Rubbish and recycling for businesses in the inner CBD

April 2015
Auckland’s inner CBD has special rubbish and recycling
collection arrangements. City traffic, limited footpath space
and high pedestrian use means a wheelie bin service is not
suitable for this area. This guide explains how businesses
should use Auckland Council’s rubbish and recycling service.
If your business is within the area, this guide is for you. Auckland Council’s
kerbside rubbish and recycling service in the inner CBD covers Karangahape
Road, Queen Street and the area bounded by Mayoral Drive, Albert Street,
Kitchener Street, Britomart Place and Quay Street.

YOUR INNER CBD RUBBISH AND RECYCLING BAGS
•
The council delivers official rubbish bags and recycling bags to inner CBD
property owners twice a year, in February and August. Check with your landlord
or body corporate if you have not received your bags.
•
These bags are paid for through your rates. You receive an equivalent service to
other Auckland central ratepayers, because the number of bags supplied holds
the same volume as their bin service allows.
If you run out of council rubbish or recycling bags before your next pack is due to be
delivered, you can buy more for your household quantities of waste. Packs containing
two rubbish bags and three recycling bags are sold at the :
Auckland Council Service Centre, Bledisloe House, 24 Wellesley Street, Auckland.
Business rubbish
The official Auckland Council rubbish and recycling bags are for household quantities
of rubbish and recycling only, for example from your staff lunchroom. Business rubbish
is anything that results directly from commercial or trade activity, for example food
waste, cooking oil or bottles from a café or bar; medical waste from a pharmacy; or large
quantities of packaging or cardboard from a retailer. You will need to pay for a private
licensed rubbish collection operator to collect business rubbish and large quantities
of recyclable materials. Visit recycler.org.nz for local recyclers.
What goes in your rubbish bag
•
Put household quantities of rubbish that cannot be recycled into your rubbish bag.
•
Do not put garden rubbish, hazardous items, such as paint, batteries, household
cleaners or garden chemicals, or liquids in your rubbish bag.
•
Wrap any broken glass or sharp objects before putting them in your rubbish bag –
otherwise these can be dangerous for the collection team.
•
Make sure your rubbish bag is a safe carry weight – 10kg is the limit.
•
Businesses must not use these bags to dispose of commercial/trade waste.
What goes in your clear recycling bag
•
You can recycle packaging from the kitchen, bathroom and laundry, including
plastic bottles and containers, glass bottles and jars, tins and cans, and paper.
•
Please remember:
- wash and squash containers
- leave the lids on bottles and containers
- containers should be no larger than 4 litres
•

and can’t go in your Auckland Council recycling bag.
Separate cardboard recycling collection
Cardboard needs to be bundled securely (to stop it blowing away)
and put out next to rubbish and recycling bags during stated
collection times. Remove all non-cardboard packaging,
such as polystyrene and plastic wrap and strapping.
Do not put any cardboard inside a bag.
Make sure cardboard does not block
the footpath or access ways.
RUBBISH & RECYCLING COLLECTION TIMES:
Please make sure all staff know when to put rubbish and recycling at the kerbside.
Put this flyer up in your rubbish store room as a reminder.
How to put your rubbish and recycling out
You may only place official Auckland Council rubbish
and recycling bags or bags supplied by another licensed
commercial collector at the kerbside during stated
collection times. Securely bundled cardboard should
be placed next to the bags. Please be considerate of
pedestrians and nearby food premises when putting
bags out. Bags and cardboard must not block the
footpath or access to public litter bins.
Illegal dumping
•
Rubbish and recycling not in an official bag is considered illegal dumping. People
caught dumping rubbish illegally could be fined up to $400, while body corporates
could be fined as much as $20,000.
•
Placing official rubbish bags, recycling bags or cardboard at the kerbside outside of
collection times may result in prosecution, as this breaches the Solid Waste bylaw
2012.
