Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours -- or the equivalent of a half a gallon of gasoline. We use over 80,000,000,000 aluminum pop cans every year. Once an aluminum can is recycled, it can be part of a new can within six weeks. Americans use 85,000,000 tons of paper a year; about 680 pounds per person. The first real recycling program was introduced in New York City in the 1890s. The city's first recycling plant was built in 1898. More than 20,000,000 Hershey's Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of tinfoil. All that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it. One-third of the water used in most homes is flushed down the toilet. Aluminum can be recycled from cans, bicycles, computers, cookware, wires, cars, planes and other sources. The average aluminum can goes from the supermarket shelf to scrap and back to the shelf in 42 days. Recycling Collection: Trash Collection: Every Other Week Every Week Please place trash within 5 feet of the curb by 7:00a.m. on your scheduled pickup day in 20-30 gallon trash containers or plastic bags not to exceed 40 pounds. Do not place trash our until 6:00p.m. the night before pickup day. Please refrain from putting broken glass syringes or sharp objects loosely in plastic bags. This will prevent lacerations and puncture wounds from occurring. In addition to household trash, bagged grass, bagged leaves, furniture and appliances including refrigerators, will be accepted. All hedge cutting, limbs and branches should be securely tied. They must not exceed 4 feet in length, 4 inches in diameter, or 40 pounds in weight. Please place these items at the curb on the regularly scheduled pickup day. Any waste generated by a contractor performing work at a private residence will not be collected on your regularly scheduled collection day. The contractor is responsible for disposing of these materials in another manner. A dumpster can be rented for an additional fee.
