Flying Pig Project

Characteristics of the Cask
Flying Pig Project
Development of a B(U) cask for
Hotlab
In an effort to optimize cooperation between worldwide hot
labs, some hot lab operators, assisted by members of
industry, authorities, and transport organizations, started to
refocus their attention on the international transfer of
research radioactive material. During the last 3 years, the
main design principles of a new cask, optimized for Hot Lab
specifications, were identified, incorporating valuable
feedback on past experiences of existing casks on the
market.
AREVA TN was selected by hot lab operators to design and
license this new cask.

Future Milestones
Concept based on …
After receiving the specification and interface studies
from all interested laboratories, TN International will be
able to finalize the feasibility study.
The Flying Pig is based on the concept of the TN®106, thus taking
advantage of an existing and established design. More than 200
transports have been executed with the TN®106 since it has been
put into service.
The TN®106 is known to hot lab users, thus the easiest way to
guarantee good operability
The TN®106 is also known to the respective authorities:
The French Competent Authority (FCA) has issued a certificate
The United States Competent Authority has issued a DOT
validation
The design process is currently planned to be
completed in 2016. Performed in parallel, fabrication of
the cask and receipt of the French Competent Authority
approval will be completed by the end 2018.
Afterwards, we can let the “Pig” fly in countries that
signed the ADR regulation. For the US, the DOT
validation will be issued approximately six months later.
