• The car is shackled by its lack of foresight
– it can’t alert ‘nearly failed’, it waits to fail
– it doesn’t know when speed limits change or
accidents ahead have happened
• Connecting it to the internet liberates cars from
these and many other shackles
• Cars can communicate, and speak with cars
– It can tell you (and the garage) when its about to fail
– Accident information can be passed from the start of a
queue to the back of the queue
– Icy road information from cars antilock brake data will
be sent to the car behind for safer winter driving

Though getting ‘smarter’, the car is only an
amplifier for one of our abilities
• This misses the
horizontals
– the links
between the
data
• Context of use
is in the
horizontals
– What you do,
when and with
who

The challenge is your data is in
‘verticals’ and taken by firms
•
The Internet of things is coming
– It will mean lots of data from your
house and your life
•
HAT collects IoT data
– And makes it accessible only to you
in one place
•
The platform is built
– We have 6 people collecting a lot of
personal data
– We are working now to scale up to 1
million people in UK and Singapore
•
HAT data is owned by the
individual
– You share it with who ever you wish
• Firms create apps to integrate your data with your life
• You, not the firm, owns your data and you chose your apps

However, we will likely use our new
powers to overcome more mundane crisis

We can use data as an amplifier for all we
do, making the smart car your exoskeleton
We have connected devices to
monitor consumption, location etc.
* For example, having to go out on a Sunday night to buy essentials as you ran out

How do we avoid the “crisis of the
mundane*”?

Example data
Length
Weight
Date
We can chose apps to remind
us of things we need and
where to buy it when we are
in our cars
Firms can compete to get
you to go and buy from
them
Firms compete with apps and
offers to make us better

Firms make apps to link our life
data in real time for us
• Cars smarter and more useful
– Currently quite focussed on travel and social networks
• There is an opportunity to think this further forwards
than transport and towards data hubs
– The car revolutionised personal transport
– Data will revolutionise the car for the first time in 100 years
• There are likely to be casualties in the data economy
– It could get very tough for supermarkets
• Automakers are extraordinarily good at adapting and
adopting new ideas
– Endless possible transport and data business models
Current focus autonomous vehicles misses the
wider opportunity for the connected car

What does this mean to you?
• A working prototype platform which captures and structures your
personal data
– Keeps your data safe for you
– Shares data only with those you allow
– Your data works for you
• Firms make applications to link your datasets
– You choose the apps to suit what you do
• Just as the SMART phone revolutionised telecoms, connection will
revolutionise transport
– SMART phones are rarely used to make a voice call
– Cars may change their primary purpose
• The car will be a data hub
– it enables you to overcome mundane crises
– it makes you more awesome
