At the NORC, we're not only working to bring you fun social activities, exercise and health programming, and help with your benefits and other issues - we also work to advocate for seniors all over the city. On May 6th, delegates Florence Dent-Hunter, Darlene Waters, and NORC Director Karalyn Shimmyo will attend a City Council advocacy day. They will meet with City Councilmember Corey Johnson, to ask for his support in securing more funds for meals, case management and social work, NORCs, and other services that are important to seniors in our community. We had a great time visiting El Museo del Barrio in April, and we're making a second trip on May 14th! A bagged lunch will be provided, and transportation will be offered from the Fulton Center to El Museo, leaving at 9am. The cost of this trip is only $3 and available on a first-come-first-served basis, so reserve your spot today! Call 212-760-9800 x 3010 or speak with your case manager to RSVP. (Pics on Page 8!) Are you a caregiver for a child or adult? Perhaps you receive caregiving help from a friend or loved one? Caregiving refers to the provision of assistance to another person who needs help with daily activities. It often requires attention to the physical, mental, social, and psychological needs and well-being of both the caregivers and the person requiring care. On May 28th, we are partnering with EmblemHealth to screen the film, "Caring for Me; Caring for You," followed by a discussion on Caregiving issues led by Gregory Johnson, creator of EmblemHealth's Care for the Family Caregiver Program. All are welcome, and refreshments will be served! Join us on 5/28 at 6pm to have your questions answered and meet others on the caregiving journey. 6 Elliott-Chelsea NORC Activities Calendar For Residents of Elliott-Chelsea Houses Age 60+ MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY 9:00-12:00 Social Services (Servicios Sociales) 9:00-12:00 Social Services (Servicios Sociales) 9:00-12:00 Social Services (Servicios Sociales) 9:00-12:00 Social Services (Servicios Sociales) 9:00-12:00 Social Services (Servicios Sociales) 9:00-12:00 Food Stamp Applications (SNAP Aplicaciones) 5/6, 5/20 9:00-5:00 Nursing (Servicios Enfermería) (Maria) 9:00-10:30 *Handicrafts (*Artesanias) (Ms. Yan) 9:00-5:00 Nursing (Servicios Enfermería) (Maria) 10:00-11:00 *Tai Chi (Sunny) 10:30-12:00 *Basic English for Chinese Speakers (*Inglés Básico para Personaje Chino) (Bernard) 11:00-12:00 Arthritis 9:00-12:00 Exercise I *Mah Jongg & (Ejercicio para la Artritis I) Social Club (Marline) (*Mah Jongg & Club Social) 12:30-1:30 Lunch & 1:00-2:00 Learn **Cultura (Almuerzo y Hispana Aprender (Giselle) Hablando de Salud) (Maria) *in Chinese / en chino **in Spanish / en Espanol 10:30-12:00 *Chinese Club (*Club Chino) (Rui Fang) 10:00-11:00 Blood Pressure Screenings (Preción Arterial) (Maria) 1:00-2:00 Yoga (Nobue) 1:30-3:00 Jewelry (Fabricación de Joyas) (Janice) 5:00-7:00 Evening Hours Social Services (en la tarde Servicios Sociales) (Giselle) 10:30-11:30 Arthritis Exercise II (Ejercicio para la Artritis II) (Marline) 11:30-1:00 Life in the 21st Century (La vida en el siglo 21) (Natalie) NORC Office Closed (NORC Oficina Cerrada) 1:00-3:00 NORC/Fulton Bingo (Darlene & Mae) Call the Elliott-Chelsea NORC for assistance with shopping/errands; escort to appointments; Social Security, Disability, Food Stamps, HEAP and other benefits; emotional health or family issues; legal help; health care and health insurance; housing issues; and more. Byrne Patrick J. Byrne is a thespian person who is obsessed with theatre. We are happy to take the opportunity to interview him for this issue of Sundial. He was born south east of Ireland, is a third of 10 children (all his siblings are still in Ireland), went to Manchester, England, then to different cities around England, and eventually settled in South Hampton at age 25,where he joined the merchant marines. While in England, he waited for an opportunity to come to America to establish his career in theatrics. He was a crew member on a ship Queen Mary that eventually took him to New York. Patrick made his dream a reality in 1968 by starting a Stage Lights Theatre in New York. He then started an extension called Stage Lights Two (later changed to “Nameless Theatre”) on W22 st. This theatre was operating for 18 years. Patrick’s first performance in New York was as Henry in “Outward Bound.” Around 50 years ago, He performed as Dr. Kelly in a play “Message Of the Century” written by Mary-Eunice in Hudson Guild theatre. Patrick performed as a taxi driver in “Waiting For Lefty” at the Roundabout Theater. He also performed in a couple of children’s plays in the Elliott-Chelsea Center theatre when it just opened. Patrick performed as doctor Morrisey in a play “Send Me No Flowers.” Patrick knew Hudson Guild for many decades, and gave discounted tickets to the center. He actively participates in poetry club, acting and improv, and creative writing.
