VOLUNTEER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY Application Deadline: Friday April 03, 2015 Title: Social Media Assistant Position type: Internship, part-time (flexible, approx. 16 hours per week) Location: Humanitarian Coalition Office, Ottawa and/or from home Period: May 2015 – August 2015 (flexible start and end dates; possibility of extension) PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS AN UNPAID INTERNSHIP. However, expenses for public transportation and lunches will be reimbursed. 1. ABOUT The Humanitarian Coalition (HC) is a network of Canadian NGOs dedicated to a united response in cases of humanitarian crises. The members of the Coalition unite because they recognise the need for strong, decisive action. At present, the Coalition has FIVE members: CARE Canada, Oxfam Canada, OxfamQuébec, Plan Canada and Save the Children Canada. These members share the same goal to help the most vulnerable and together they are even better equipped to do so. By joining their efforts, the members of the HC strive to increase transparency and accountability to both the Canadian public and to those they assist around the world. Together, they will reduce administrative costs and ensure help gets to where it is needed faster than it was possible before. The HC is a separate legal entity from the member agencies, principally tasked with fundraising during humanitarian appeals for aid. The HC does not operate any programs overseas. 2. PURPOSE Working directly with the HC Programs and Operations Manager and the Content Creator Intern, the Social Media Intern will be responsible for the overall online presence of the HC, with special attention to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Youtube, Pintrest and Flickr. During the work term, they will update the social media strategy and implement it. They will monitor, analyze and report on existing data and trends. They will also help build the HC as a central point of information for Canadians on humanitarian news and events by assisting with website development and the management of the blog, Relief to Recovery. In addition, the intern may be asked to support other HC projects as needed including supporting fundraisers and undertaking special research, as well as supporting various members of our team where needed. 3. We value our interns immensely and our hope is that this internship will allow the intern to: Gain experience working in a growing Canadian NGO Broaden and deepen their skills and understanding of the HC’s humanitarian work; Gain experience working in a office environment and interacting with a diverse group of HC and member organization staff, including international program, organizational services and policy and communications teams; Gain experience, visibility and reference from your work at the HC; 4. RESPONSIBILITIES This is a preliminary list of responsibilities that may be modified in conjunction with the intern. News Monitoring: Keep an eye on humanitarian news and information to share with the Canadian public Social Media Strategy and Management: o Implement and update HC’s social media strategy to use social media marketing techniques to increase visibility and traffic o Implement and manage social media programs by enhancing the HC’s social media presence to promote the organization’s goals o Monitor effective benchmarks for measuring the impact of social media programs, and analyze, review, and report on effectiveness of campaigns in an effort to maximize results o Manage social media accounts including: Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Pinterest, LinkedIn and YouTube; explore other social media avenues Website and Blog support: the intern will assist in the maintenance of the HC website, Humanitarian Bulletin Board and Relief to Recovery blog, this includes adding content, keeping the information up to date, contributing to infographic designs, and other tasks as needed. Other special projects as required 5. TIME COMMITMENT 2 days a week (at least 1 day during office hours) / approx. 16 hrs/week. Flexible schedule. **THIS IS A FLEXIBLE REQUIREMENT IN RECOGNITION OF THE UNPAID NATURE OF THIS INTERNSHIP. We are open to alternate work agreements. 6. REQUIREMENTS Required: Background in social media coordination and communications, strategies Demonstrated understanding of social media best practices in Facebook and Twitter required, and in Pinterest, YouTube, Flickr and LinkedIn desirable; Strong interest in communications or a related field; Demonstrated creativity and research skills High degree of familiarity with all Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.); Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Strong planning and execution skills Able to work independently, as well as effectively in a team setting; Desirable: Background in international development or humanitarian aid Previous experience with infographics design (Piktochart or similar) Enthusiasm, creativity and sense of humour valued.
