How to select courses Autumn 2015 2013-curriculum for the MA in English Studies (full degree) The Student Counselling Office English Studies Guide to course selection From the autumn 2015 and in all the following semesters students are required to register for 30 new ECTS credits each semester which means you must be a full time student during the entire MA program. When registering for a course you must also register for the exam(s) linked to it. All registrations are binding and you must therefore ensure to register for the right courses and exams. Read this guide carefully and if you have any questions please contact the student counseling office for any doubts at [email protected]. Step 1: Study structure Step 2: Register for courses Step 2A: Register for courses in English Studies Step 2B:Register for Electives Step 1: Get an overview of the study structure If you enrolled in the MA in English Studies in or after September 2013 you are enrolled in the 2013 curriculum. Please see recommended study structure at the next page. You are allowed to change the order of the Free Topics, however, we recommend that you follow this order as it coheres with the courses offered in the program. If you wish to make any changes to the recommended study structure, please consult the student counselling office for further information. The student counseling office can also give information and counseling regarding studying abroad, choosing electives and internships. 2 Recommended study structure for the MA in English Studies Semester Topic 1. (spring) Master thesis, 30 ECTS Step 2: Register for courses When registering for courses you must be aware that there are different registration procedures depending on whether the courses are within English Studies (Free topics) or outside English Studies (Electives). Step 2a: How to register for the courses, exams and internship within English Studies? Free topics in English Studies Start by reading the general information about course registration at KUnet, then go to the course catalogue at www.courses.ku.dk and search for all “Free Topics” in English Studies. Under each course you can see a course description, the schedule and the exam form. In the course descriptions you will find three kinds of exam forms: 3 A: Free written assignment B: Oral exam with synopsis C: active participation. The exam form is what determinates if the courses cohere with the topics from the curriculum. Therefor you need to make sure that the course can be used for the topics you intend to follow the next semester. Please use the list below to see which courses can be chosen for which topics: Guide to course selection for free topics in English Studies Topic Choose between Register for the exam: courses that allow: Free Topic 1A exam form C 1A: active participation Free Topic 1B exam form A 1B: free written assignment Free Topic 2A exam form C 2A: set written assignment (48 hours) based on active participation Free Topic 2B exam form B 2B: Oral exam with synopsis Free Topic 3A exam form C 3A: set written assignment (48 hours) based on active participation Free Topic 3B exam form B 2B: Oral exam with synopsis Free Topic 4A exam form A or B 4A: set written assignment (academic performance 5 ECTS, written proficiency in English 2,5 ECTS) Free Topic 4B exam form A or B 4A: free written assignment with an oral exam (academic performance 5 ECTS, oral proficiency in English 2,5 ECTS) You register for your courses at The Self Service during the course registration period. Please find the deadline here. When registering you need to choose three priorities for each topic in your study plan for the semester. Places are allocated by drawing lots. Once you have registered for a course, all communication takes place through the virtual learning environment Absalon. When your registration is approved, you will be granted access to the course room in Absalon. 4 Internship If you wish to do an internship you must both register for courses amounting to 15 ECTS and for an internship module of 15 ECTS during the course registration period. You must register through the Self Service. Usually an internship is placed during the second or third semester of the program. Step 2b: How to register for the Electives During the MA program you have you elective studies that amount to 30 ECTS credits. Electives can be chosen outside or within English Studies. Read more about electives. Electives outside English Studies: Please note that there are different registration procedures depending on whether the electives are within or outside the faculty of Humanities: All Master's courses at the Faculty of Humanities are available as elective courses in the form of single subject elements. If you wish to register for electives within the faculty of Humanities you must register at The Self Service during the course registration period. Please find the deadline here. It is also possible to take elective courses at other faculties at the University of Copenhagen, at other research-based educational institutes in Denmark or abroad. You need to apply for a preapproval. Please find the deadline and read more about the application procedure. 5 Electives within English Studies: You can also choose some or all of your Electives within the MA program in English Studies. You must register the same way as for the free topics in English Studies (step 2a). The electives within English Studies consist of four Free Topics described in the curriculum: Elective A, B, C and D. Each topic consists of 7.5 ECTS. As with the Free Topics within English Studies, the exam form for the course determinates whether it can be used for the Elective Topics within English Studies.
