ICASM 2015
Second Announcement
63rd International Congress
of Aviation and Space Medicine
20-24 September 2015
Oxford, UK
WELCOME
The 63rd International Congress of Aviation and Space Medicine will be held in the historic university
city of Oxford, England in September 2015. This event will make full use of University facilities for
the scientific sessions, the social programme and for accommodation, permitting delegates to
experience the true atmosphere of this ancient seat of learning by visiting, and even staying in, a
selection of its architecturally and historically interesting buildings. On behalf of the Organising
Committee I would like to invite all those involved in the sphere of Aerospace Medicine not only to
attend the meeting, but also to consider contributing to the scientific programme by submitting an
abstract.
The Congress will be held under the auspices of the International Academy of Aviation and Space
Medicine and the Organising Committee are planning to assemble a varied and exciting programme
covering many of the most topical areas of this specialty. There will be a particular emphasis on the
Space component of Aerospace Medicine; this will provide the focus of both the Allard Lecture and
the Ernsting Panel. The Educational Visit day will include programmes covering military aeromedical
evacuation, research into aerospace medicine and flying training.
Oxford is situated in a most attractive part of England and there would be excellent opportunities for
extending your stay with a post Congress holiday. We very much look forward to welcoming you to
ICASM 2015.
Professor Tony Batchelor CBE
President, ICASM 2015
ANDRE ALLARD LECTURE
Dr Kevin Fong is a medical doctor, astrophysicist and engineer with a special interest in human space
exploration and extreme environmental physiology. He will deliver the Andre Allard lecture and will
address the question of whether we are approaching ‘The Second Space Age’. Dr Fong works at
University College London as an anaesthetist, is the founder of the Centre for Altitude, Space and
Extreme Environmental Medicine, a broadcaster and the Honorary Chair of Public Engagement for
Science and Medicine. His lecture will explore the infinite nature of the space frontier as commercial
space tourism is becoming a reality.
JOHN ERNSTING PANEL
Medical Issues in Commercial Space Flight
Against a background of increasing momentum in the development of commercial space flight
programmes, the panel will examine a range of health associated issues which could become
relevant once wider public access to the space environment is available.

EDUCATIONAL VISITS – 24 September 2015
The RAF Aeromedical Evacuation Service, Brize Norton
Depart 08:30, return 16:30
The Tactical Medical Wing (TMW) of the Royal Air Force provides the medical support to operations
and exercises and provides the UK’s Aeromedical Evacuation Service from RAF Brize Norton. This
educational visit will provide an opportunity to see the following capabilities, equipment and speak to
personnel who perform these duties:
• Air Transportable Isolator (ATI) - the capability used to move patients with highly infectious
diseases.
• Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) - the highly capable forward aeromedical
evacuation capability.
• Strategic aeromedical evacuation - the UK’s globally accessible fixed wing aeromedical
evacuation aircraft and equipment.
QinetiQ, Boscombe Down
Depart 08:00, return 16:30
Boscombe Down is where QinetiQ houses and flies its extensive fleet of primarily military aircraft
which are used predominantly for MoD customer funded flight trials and independent technical
evaluation (ITE). Boscombe Down also houses facilities that support aeromedical research, project
support and ITE. The educational visit will focus on 3 areas:
• The pressure chamber facility, including a very high performance decompression chamber that
has been used for the development of the Typhoon life support system.
• The environmental facility comprising 2 chambers, one large enough to house an aircraft and
able to produce extremes of temperature to assess the effects on humans and equipment they
wear and operate.
• A hangar visit to view the Hawk aircraft operated by the RAF Centre of Aviation Medicine that
are maintained and supported by QinetiQ. During the visit the aeromedical flight trials,
research and ITE conducted on these aircraft will be presented.
During the return trip there may be an opportunity to see Stonehenge briefly, which is located a short
distance away.
CAE Oxford Aviation Academy at Oxford Airport
Depart 09:00, return 16:00
Oxford Airport is home to CAE Oxford Aviation Academy (CAE OAA), the largest ab initio flight
training network in the world. Drawing upon over 85 years of pilot training expertise, CAE OAA has
the capacity to train more than 2,000 cadets per year across 9 flight schools on four continents. CAE
OAA trains cadets for a range of airlines, combining premier ground school courses with high quality
flying instruction. The aircraft fleet based at Oxford includes Piper Seneca Vs, Piper Seneca IIs and
Cessna 182s. The centre also houses numerous simulators based on their aircraft types plus three
jet simulators based on B737-300 and the CRJ200.
Following introductory presentations, the educational programme will include visits to the skills
assessment area, the ground school and simulators, and to the hanger to view training aircraft. An
interactive question and answer session will provide a unique opportunity to explore medical and
psychological aspects of pilot selection and training with input from leading professionals. In
addition, the UK’s largest fixed-wing air ambulance, AirMed, flies Learjets and turboprops out of
Oxford Airport and will also feature in the visit.

Please note that some of the Educational Visits may be subject to a restriction on numbers, with
places allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis dependent upon the date of registration.
