Our guest artists share their knowledge and experiences with our students
while visiting classes, conducting clinics, and performing concerts.
Orianthi | Toronto | Session 2 Orianthi has already experienced what
most aspiring musicians only dream of. She’s played with and opened for her
hero (Steve Vai), backed an Idol (Carrie Underwood), traded solos with a
legend (Carlos Santana) and shared the stage with the King of Pop (Michael
Jackson). Originally from Adelaide Australia, she caught her first break when
the opportunity to jam with Carlos Santana in her hometown came along.
Performances, tours and guest appearances with Steve Vai, ZZ Top and Prince
followed. When offered the gig in Michael Jackson’s live band, Orianthi joined
a prestigious line of guitar players. Sadly, the tour was not to be and music
lost an icon. Before she received the call from the King of Pop, Orianthi had
already been hard at work on her debut album, Believe, on which she sings,
writes and leads her own band. Her hit single, “According To You” is a great
example of her ability to blend a catchy tune with a killer guitar solo. Orianthi packs punch into
every turn of phrase, but it’s the shredding that takes her brand of rock to an entirely new level.
Mike Stern | Vancouver Session In a career that spans three
decades and a discography that includes more than a dozen eclectic
and innovative recordings, six-time Grammy nominee Mike Stern has
established himself as one of the premier jazz and jazz-fusion guitarists
and composers of his generation. Some of his former bandmates include
Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius, Billy Cobham, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Marcus
Miller, Bill Evans, David Sanborn, Dave Weckl, Dennis Chambers, and
Michael Brecker, among other high-profile innovators. Since his earliest
recordings he has grafted elements of rock, blues, soul and more to his
solid jazz foundations. He has been named Best Jazz Guitarist Of The
Year by the readers and critics of Guitar Player. His latest solo release was
nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
David Grissom | Toronto | Session 1 Blues, rock and roll,
country, R&B... somewhere in our collective imagination, there’s a
crossroads where all of these great musical traditions meet. And that’s
where you’ll find David Grissom. David has toured and recorded with
artists such as John Mellencamp, Storyville, The Allman Brothers
Band, The Dixie Chicks, Chris Isaak, Robben Ford, The Fabulous
Thunderbirds, Ringo Starr, Buddy Guy, and many more . His songs have
been recorded by Trisha Yearwood, Lee Ann Womack, John Mayall, and
Storyville among others. He has been featured several times in Guitar
Player, Guitar World, Musician, and Vintage Guitar magazines.

Rik Emmett | Toronto | Session 2 Rik Emmett has his
fair share of gold and platinum hanging on the wall after surviving
three decades in the music biz. Awards ranging from Best Guitarist
at the ‘81 Junos to Best Smooth Jazz Guitarist in 2005, along with
induction into the Canadian Rock Hall of Fame in ‘93 for his work
with Triumph, the Music Industry Hall of Fame in 2007 and the
Junos Hall of Fame in 2008 highlight an ever-evolving career. The
multi-dimensional guitarist/singer/songwriter at the heart of it has
nothing to prove except the dignity and maturity of his continuing
commitment to great music. Audiences marvel at his versatility from the hard rock that made his
reputation in the first place to classical to jazz to acoustic pop & folk vocal stylings. He is counted
amongst the world’s finest guitarists performing alongside legendary performers such as George
Benson and Steve Vai. A dozen years as a writer for Guitar Player Magazine and his instructional
books demonstrate his commitment to music education.
Dave LaRue | Toronto | Session 1 One of the finest bass players
around, two time Grammy nominee Dave LaRue has been touring and
recording with the Dixie Dregs and the Steve Morse Band since 1988. Dave
has also kept busy working with other artists including Joe Satriani, John
Petrucci (Dream Theater), the Hellecasters, Pat Travers, Steve Lukather, Mike
Stern, Eric Johnson, Andy Timmons, Steve Vai, Albert Lee, Vinnie Moore,
Paul Gilbert, Rik Emmett (Triumph), and Tony MacAlpine. Education is a
big part of Dave’s career - he wrote an instructional column for Bass Player
magazine for several years and served as a member of their Advisory Board. In
addition, Dave has an instructional video as well as a bass method book.
Don Ross | Toronto | Session 2 One of today’s true innovators of
guitar composition and technique, Don Ross has emerged as one of the
most respected musicians in Canada and one of the top guitarists in the
world. Noted for the emotion and intensity of his playing as well as his use of
extended technique, Don’s music borrows from blues, jazz, folk and classical
music creating a style that he describes as “heavy wood.” Don is the only
person to twice win the U.S. National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship
(1988 and 1996). His album Huron Street reached the top ten on the
Billboard new age chart. Don passionately plays the six and seven string
guitars as well as dobro. He has released several mostly instrumental CDs,
has published three instructional videos, several single transcriptions, a book
with nine of his pieces, and has worked with Canadian Musician magazine.
Don continues to tour extensively in Europe, Canada, the U.S., and Asia.

Dave Martone | Vancouver Session
Dave has been featured in Guitar Player, Guitar
World and Guitar One Magazine where he was
voted one of the top 4 underground shredders
in North America! In addition to six solo albums
and two live concert DVD’s, Dave has appeared on
countless compilation albums. Dave has worked
with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen,
Chad Kroeger, and many others.
Jon Finn | Toronto | Session 1 The Jon Finn Group has internationally released several
CD’s and has built a solid fan-base worldwide among instrumental
rock guitar enthusiasts. His band has opened for Dream Theater,
Jeff Beck, Edgar Winter, and many more. Jon has authored several
instructional books including the best selling ‘Advanced Modern
Rock Guitar Improvisation’ and has also been a columnist for some
of the major guitar magazines. His versatility has allowed him to
play alongside Steve Morse, Steve Gadd, Steven Tyler, Vince Gill,
the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Andy Timmons, Stu Hamm,
Gloria Estefan, and John Petrucci among others.
Vito Rezza | Toronto | Session 1
Along with teaching Jeremy Taggart (Our Lady Peace),
Walfredo Reyes Jr. (Santana), Marvin Smitty Smith ( Jay
Leno Show), and many others, Vito has kept a very busy
schedule recording with his group “5 after 4” which
has also featured the likes of Michael Brecker, Richard
Bona, Joey DeFrancesco and Vinnie Cloaiuta and Scott
Henderson. He has played with Frank Gambale, Steven
Stills, Brian Auger and Guthrie Govan, among others.

Facilities & locations
Toronto: Our program is held at Appleby College in Oakville, Ontario, located 20 minutes
west of Toronto. This scenic campus overlooks the shores of Lake Ontario in a beautiful and
natural setting and boasts modern facilities including large classrooms, spacious residences,
a stage and auditorium, practice rooms, a large dining hall, as well as recreational facilities
and athletic fields. Toronto is one of the largest cities in North America with an incredibly
vibrant music scene. Attractions include the CN Tower, Massey Hall, Harbourfront, and
much more.
Travel Information: Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from
the campus. Toronto’s Pearson International Airport is the nearest airport located 20 minutes
away. Taxi and limousine services are available from the airport.
Vancouver: Our program is held on the beautiful campus of Quest University in
Squamish, B.C. Conveniently located between Vancouver and Whistler along the Pacific
Ocean and Coast Mountains, this location offers brand new facilities and accommodations
with the most breathtaking scenery imaginable. This location is just 30 minutes from the
world class multicultural city of Vancouver, which boasts a healthy music scene and plenty of
attractions including beaches, Stanley Park, and world-class shopping and dining. Whistler,
one of North America’s most popular vacation spots, is also located nearby.
Travel Information: Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the
campus. Shuttle, taxi, and other ground transportation should be arranged from Vancouver
International Airport to the campus.

Seminars
general information
Seminars are courses which concentrate on
specific topics and will sometimes feature
guest instructors. Generally, seminars are
designed for the intermediate to advanced
player although some may be open to all
levels. Students are evaluated to ensure
that they are at an appropriate level for the
course. Seminar students meet with the
instructor all day and, because there is no
restriction to class size, do not take part in
rhythm section classes. Faculty led ensembles
for seminars depend upon class size and
format.
Clinics
G
uitar Workshop Plus is a program designed for aspiring musicians of all ages to promote
the growth and development of musical knowledge and skills. Our program is unique in
that we cater our instruction to the student’s personal style, level of experience, and musical
goals. We create a healthy, non-competitive, and supportive environment in which to learn.
Each day consists of morning and afternoon classes that involve a hands-on approach, late
afternoon clinics, ensemble performances, and evening concerts. Students will also enjoy visits
from world-class guest artists and have many performance opportunities. DVD recordings of
the student performances are available after the sessions. The complete immersion in music
allows students to walk away with enough material and musical ideas to last until next year.
Whether you just started playing recently and want to get started in the right direction, or
you’ve been playing professionally and want to further develop your craft, you will find what
you’re looking for at Guitar Workshop Plus.
Currently, instruction is provided for guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and vocals. Students
can elect to study one class OR seminar each session. The guitar program is extensive and
unique in that students elect to study the style that they enjoy most. Guitar styles include
rock, blues, jazz, acoustic, classical and a guitar course for the absolute beginner. We also offer
comprehensive bass, drums, keyboard, vocal and songwriting classes covering various styles,
theory, performance, and technique.
Each course combines hands-on technique with musicianship skills such as theory, ear
training, rhythm studies, etc. In addition, most of these classes include a one-hour per day rhythm
section class in which students are given the opportunity to play with the faculty rhythm section
and apply the skills and knowledge they are acquiring in class.
In addition, all students may attend clinics.
Each day, two or three clinics are offered
covering topics such as improvisation,
songwriting, vocals, scales and modes,
building technique, slide, percussion, hand
drumming and more. Students are welcome
to sign up for these clinics on campus.
Our Administration
Our administration has been responsible for organizing and directing summer music programs
across North America for the past fifteen years. Founded by Brian Murray, a Toronto based
guitarist/performer/educator, the Guitar Workshop Plus administration and faculty have
developed a loyal student base due to the positive experience, excellent curriculum, professional
faculty, visiting guest artists, and the opportunity to meet other people who share the same
musical interests.
Our Faculty
Our faculty is carefully selected and comprised of professional musicians and instructors with
extensive experience teaching in workshops, private settings, and post-secondary institutions.
These talented educators have considerable recording backgrounds, perform around the world,
author instructional books and write columns for music magazines.
Classes
Classes are offered for varying skill levels ranging from
beginner to advanced. On the first day of the session,
all students are evaluated to ensure that they are placed
in the appropriate class level thereby maximizing their
learning potential. Class sizes are small to promote
individualized attention for each student as well as to
facilitate ensemble arrangements.

Guitar for the Complete Beginner | This class is designed for guitarists of all
classes available
Rock Guitar | This course covers all of the necessary
elements of playing rock guitar. Techniques including
bending, hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, vibrato, and tapping
are covered. Other topics include chord work, pentatonic
scales, arpeggios, and modes. From the classic rock sounds
of Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix to the modern styles
of Foo Fighters and Nickelback, this course will help any
aspiring rock guitarist.
Blues Guitar | Designed for the aspiring blues guitarist, this course
covers the styles of blues masters such as B.B. King, Albert Collins, Eric
Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Topics include pentatonic scales,
chord voicings, arpeggios, turnarounds and developing ‘feel’ through
the use of blues techniques such as bends, slides, and vibrato.
Jazz Guitar | Students will learn and develop the skills required
to effectively perform jazz guitar in the style of masters such as Jim Hall,
Pat Metheny, John Scofield, and Joe Pass. Topics include harmony, chord
voicings and extensions, swing feel comping, chord/melody approaches,
and extensive improvisation studies such as scales, modes, arpeggios, and creating lines. Swing,
bebop, Latin, and modal styles will be covered by analyzing jazz standard repertoire.
Classical Guitar | From Paganini to Rodrigo, this course will explore a variety of right
hand finger-picking techniques, musical understanding and interpretation of pieces. Topics
will include classical arpeggios, flamenco rasgueados, tremolos, and a study of repertoire of
some of the greatest composers such as Sor and Brouwer. Students will leave this class with
the skills necessary to express themselves on classical guitar as well as skills useful for other
styles of playing. The course will culminate with an ensemble performance at the end of the
session.
Acoustic Guitar | Essential elements of
acoustic guitar playing are covered for solo performance
and vocal accompaniment. Topics include flatpicking,
finger picking, chord harmony, scale theory, alternate
tunings, and slide. From the Delta blues sound of
Robert Johnson to the folk stylings of Joni Mitchell
and James Taylor to the modern acoustic sounds of
Michael Hedges and Dave Matthews, this course is a
must for the acoustic guitarist.

chords, strumming, and single note playing are learned. Songs from a
variety of styles including, rock, blues, folk and others are studied while
applying skills learned in class.
Bass Guitar | Bass players of all levels will benefit from this course.
Bass skills needed to play many styles including jazz, rock, funk, Latin,
and blues are covered. Topics include chord progressions, creating bass
lines, improvisation, ear training, and theory. Bass techniques such as
slapping, popping, and chords are also explored. Students enrolled in
this course will have extensive ensemble performance opportunities.
Drums/Percussion | Designed for drummers of all levels,
this intensive course covers all styles of music. Conducted in group
and private lessons, students will study groove, technique,
syncopation, polyrhythms, brush technique, soloing, reading,
and other drum and percussion concepts. Students enrolled
in this course will have extensive ensemble performance
opportunities.
Keyboard | Keyboard players of all levels will work with
instructors in a setting that enables students, including those
classically trained, a chance to explore improvised and popular
contemporary music styles including jazz, blues and rock.
Curriculum topics include triads, intervals, chord voicings &
progressions, inversions, scales and modes, soloing, rhythm
section fundamentals, synthesis and midi recording. Students
enrolled in this course will have extensive ensemble performance opportunities.
Vocals | For vocalists of all levels, this course is designed to develop individual vocal
style, expand vocal range and increase overall vocal ability while learning to sing the songs
you enjoy. Learn techniques that are used in singing pop,
jazz, blues, rock, country, and folk. Topics include chest,
middle, and head voice, breathing, vibrato, licks and trills,
and daily warm ups. Also explore diet, body movement and
overcoming stage fright. Students enrolled in this course
will have extensive ensemble performance opportunities.
Songwriting | Through a combination of individual
and interactive in-class study and performance, this course
will introduce students to the basics of the art—and
business—of song writing. Open to students of various levels, the course will be divided into
three main study areas: lyricwriting, song structure, and the business of songwriting. The
course will focus on popular or mainstream genres, and the class will analyze songs from a
wide range of popular song-writers, including Bob Dylan, Sheryl Crow, and Avril Lavigne.
Students will be encouraged to collaborate with their classmates and perform songs created
in class as an ensemble.

Monster Chops (Vancouver Session) with Dave Martone

Lone Star Guitar (Toronto Session 1)
with Emile D’eon and special guest David Grissom
Get in touch with your “Lone Star” guitar style. This class is designed to
help you get your Texas Blues and Rock playing on track by studying the
styles of Freddie King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Vaughan, Doyle Bramhall II, Red Volkaert,
and Billy Gibbons. This course will include working on chord/scale relationships, 3 and 4 note
arpeggios, major and minor blues scales, rhythm and lead playing styles, and soloing over popular
blues and rock material. String bending, double stops, open string scales, and pedal steel licks
will also be covered in this class. Other topics include how to set up your gear for maximum tone
and how to prepare for “playing the gig.” There will be lots of opportunity to play in this class.
Emile is an exceptional instructor and has performed with Rik Emmett, Natalie McMaster,
and Don Thompson, among others. His playing can be heard on radio, television and numerous
recordings. Austin’s very own David Grissom will be a special guest to this class to demonstrate
and answer any questions you may have about his unique style and extensive experience.
Pop Guitar for Rockers and Songwriters (Toronto Session 2)
with Donna Grantis and special guest Orianthi
Designed for guitarists of all levels, this course will provide
aspiring rock guitarists and songwriters with an in depth
analysis of pop rock songs through the study of chord
progressions, melody and form. Other key topics will include
ear training, fretboard knowledge, playing with feel and lead
guitar improvisation. This seminar will investigate the playing
styles of various guitar icons and teach you how to effectively
learn from your favourite guitar heros and heroines. A long
time member of the GWP family, Donna is a Toronto area
guitarist/songwriter/musical director who has worked with
Amanda Marshall, Juno award winning artists Divine Brown
and Jacksoul, Shakura S’Aida and blues legend Coco Montoya, among others. Special guest
Orianthi, will visit the class and share her knowledge with us. Let’s Rock!
Advanced Modern Rock Guitar Improvisation (Toronto – Session 1)
with Jon Finn
Designed for intermediate to advanced level players, Jon will teach a
personalized and detailed course laying out a clear method for rock
improvisation. Although this workshop will offer strenuous and intense
chops-building exercises, the main focus is to develop a set of tools to help you
expand your vocabulary when improvising. Topics covered include fretboard
geometry — a new look at pentatonics, rhythmic and thematic development,
analysis of chord progressions, modal improvisation, arpeggios, alternate
pentatonics, creative expression and much more.

This new and exciting seminar will help you take your playing way beyond
the next level! If you want licks, ideas, techniques, and just overall fun, look
no further! Topics will include, but will not be limited to Super Sweeping,
Hybrid Rolling Techniques, Insane tapping and bubble tapping, Hammer
on out of nowhere, Rhythmic displaced arpeggios, Blues Modes, Dominant
Pentatonic and Hexatonic Scales, Severe Hybrid Picking Techniques,
Diatonic and non-Diatonic soloing ideas, Diminished applications and
more! There will be lots of in class performing and jamming. One lucky
student in this class will walk away with a brand new guitar courtesy of

Classic Rock Styles (Toronto - Session 2)
with Pete McDonald and special guest Rik Emmett
Classic Rock from the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s has proven the test of
time and remains one of the more popular genres. From the Beatles,
Rolling Stones, Hendrix, and the Allman Brothers to The Eagles,
Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, and Aerosmith, this course will cover all
the necessary elements of the classic rock sound which continues to
influence bands today. This style incorporates a strong blues base and
slick scales with memorable phrases for soloing techniques. You will
expand your knowledge of the fretboard so that you are comfortable
rockin’ out in any position and in any key. Topics will include chords &
progressions and the theory behind them, alternate picking techniques
that evolved into what we have today, an analysis of solos from some of
the most famous classic rock tunes, and using guitar harmony with two
or more players. A look at the guitars, amps, and pedals used to create
the signature classical rock sounds will also be covered. Hall of famer
Rik Emmett will pay a special visit to this class.
Jazz Styles (Vancouver Session)
With Daryl Jahnke and special guest Mike Stern
Open to any guitarist with a keen interest in improvisation, this course
will emphasize ear training and a deeper understanding of the fingerboard
by examining familiar chord and scale structures, creating new ones, and
discovering fresh harmonic and melodic ideas. Using repertoire ranging
from Hendrix’s “Little Wing” to Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” to Metheny’s
“Bright Size Life,” we’ll cover modal chord/scale relationships, expanded
pentatonic and triad applications, chord voicing analysis and a variety of
rhythmic styles from swing to samba to odd meter funk grooves. Time
will also be spent exploring the creation of technical exercises tailored to
your own specific needs and aspirations. Daryl has toured Canada, Japan
and the UK and performed with Paul Jackson, Jeff Berlin and Terumasa
Hino as well as many of Canada’s finest jazz artists. He is currently the
head of the Jazz and Contemporary Guitar department at the VCC
School of Music. This course will also enjoy a visit from jazz guitar superstar Mike Stern!

Our Students
Our program is open for beginner to advanced
students aged 12 through adult. Our students come
from diverse backgrounds including young-aspiring
musicians, adult hobbyists, high school and postsecondary students pursuing music careers, semiprofessional and professional musicians. Students
are welcome to attend individually, with friends or
family, and even as a complete band.
On-Campus Students—Housing and Meals
On-campus students stay in the dormitories and
are provided with three meals per day. The cafeteria
offers a wide selection of food and vegetarian options
are always available. Students are housed according
to age and gender. Groups of under age students are
supervised by staff members who also stay in the dorm
house. Arrangements can be made to be roomed with
a specific roommate. Please include your roommate’s
name on the application form. A limited number of
private rooms are also available for an additional fee.
Off-Campus Students
Students who do not stay on campus overnight
during the session pay a lower tuition fee. Meals are
not included but a weekly meal plan is available for
an additional cost.
Underage Students
Unless accompanied by an approved member of the
staff and a signed parental permission form is on file,
students under the age of 18 are not permitted to
leave campus. Those under age students who drive to
the campus must leave their car keys with the office at the beginning of the session. Off campus
students who are under age 18 must be signed in and out by their parents/legal guardians
when they arrive and leave the campus. Parents of under age students must notify the office
staff if their child takes prescription medication. All medicines must be stored in our office
and will be dispersed as per written instructions outlined on the health form.

Student Policies
To maximize the enjoyment of the session for all participants and to create a friendly and
creative atmosphere, a certain code of conduct must be followed. Students who violate the
stated rules and regulations or whose behaviour jeopardizes the enjoyment and safety of other
participants will be dismissed from the program without refund of tuition. Illegal drugs
and alcohol are not permitted on campus. Possession or use of these substances results in
immediate dismissal from the program without refund of tuition.
Students must provide their own instrument and are responsible for their personal
belongings and equipment. Guitar Workshop Plus will not be held responsible for these items.
Participants in the program may be photographed during class or performances for use in
promo material or our website.
Regardless of age, all participants must complete a health form before they can be
admitted into the program. Should a medical situation arise or if there are any pre-existing or
current medical conditions that we should be aware of, we must have this information on file.
Please note, however, that we are not a special needs program. All medical expenses are the
responsibility of the student or their parent/guardian. Guitar Workshop Plus will not be held
responsible for the cost of any medicine or medical services. Guitar Workshop Plus reserves
the right to refuse admission to the program at it’s discretion.

Scholarship Information
T
he Guitar Workshop Plus scholarship fund is made possible by the generous support of
the following companies: Godin, Roland, D’Addario and Evans. These companies value
music education and support the Guitar Workshop Plus program so that students of all ages
and backgrounds have the opportunity to attend our program and study with some of the finest
musicians and educators in the music industry.
A limited number of full and partial scholarships for all instruments are available. Awards
are based on musicianship, reference letters, and financial need. All scholarship applications
must be postmarked by April 30, 2011 and applicants will be notified no later than May 31,
2011 if they have received a scholarship. Scholarship applicants must follow the application
process and payment schedule outlined on the Guitar Workshop Plus application form.
Applicants who are awarded scholarships will be refunded the value of the scholarship. If for
any reason a recipient is unable to accept the scholarship or attend, Guitar Workshop Plus must
be notified in writing by June 30, 2011.
To be considered for a scholarship award,
applicants must send the following materials:
• Completed scholarship application (page 19)
• Completed Guitar Workshop Plus application form (page 10)
along with full payment or deposit cheque
• Letter of intent stating musical interests, musical goals,
and reasons for seeking a scholarship
• CD or cassette demo including two songs
(clearly labeled and not more than 10 minutes in length)
• Two letters of reference (teachers, employers, etc.)
