WALLY BYAM CARAVAN CLUB INTERNATIONAL REGION 10 ! APRIL 2015 Idaho Unit of WBCCI A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT Happy April and welcome to spring! Most folks are happy to say goodbye to snowy, cold, windy days and welcome warm sunshiny weather. Many areas of the country greet the new season with local festivals and spring flings. Perhaps the most well known festival is the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. Did you know there are 3,700 hundred cherry trees in the nation's capital? North Carolina has the Azalea afestival. Holland, Michigan and Pella Iowa, both celebrate with Tulip Time. Out west, closer to home, there's the big Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival, the Washington State Apple Blossom Festival, and the Portland Rose Festival. Local, for many of us in the Idaho Unit, is the Payette Apple Blossom Festival. When I was "researching" this short article, I was surprised to find a list of 200 "festivals" in Idaho alone! Of course not all of them are in the spring of the year, but there are lavender festivals, tree festivals, music festivals of all kind...and even a beer festival. I'm intrigued by that one, but I'll leave it for another article. Another website lists 153 festivals in Oregon. And for the sports fans among us, myself included, two other big things are happening: college football is underway for another season with spring practice, and Major League Baseball has wrapped up spring training and opening day is already behind us. Fact is, there's a spring festival or event for just about any person's hobby, activity, interest or involvement. So what do all these festivals, spring flings, and sporting events really commemorate? At first glance they commemorate national, regional, and local icons. But it's safe to say there's a deeper reason: spring is the time of year when we tend to become more active and mobile, when we revitalize our friendships and become reinvigorated with our outdoor hobbies and/or avocations. It is a season of renewal of all things. Please note that I've purposefully not listed yard work, window washing, spring cleaning, pressure washing or painting as worthwhile spring endeavors. However, washing, provisioning, and preparing our Airstreams and tow vehicles for the first rally at Hagerman does warrant due diligence, and I hope all members have those tasks well underway and are making plans to be there for a good time, good food, and our general meeting. It'll be a great sight when all of those "silver bullets" are gleaming and neatly aligned. See you there! ~Bill Lawrence ! Have you shed those winter blahs and are you looking forward to fresh spring air? Have you de-winterized, checked the tires, water systems, batteries, etc., etc.? The Idaho Unit Directory contains some helpful hints for preparing your rig for camping. And we can share new hints around the campfires during the season. Have you sent in the current reservation coupons to the Rally hosts (and to the Caravan Leaders) yet? Your early response helps them plan scheduled events and excellent meals for our enjoyment. Plus it's a chance to meet new people and greet old friends, to catch up on the latest news. That's what rallies do -- create a sense of community, even if it's only for a few days a year. It's been said that we can continue a conversation where we left off at our last get-together, even months later. So, check the schedule and join your WBCCI community during the upcoming rally and caravan season, hopefully at more than one! 3 WALLY BYAM CARAVAN CLUB INTERNATIONAL REGION Breakout 10 !
