As Corporate Relations for UCLA IEEE and Corporate Chair for (IDE)A Hacks, I helped define what (IDE)A Hacks became. Born out of shared ideas and created with a lot of effort, it was a personally grueling process. I learned a lot and grew more. Working late nights for Natcar has also given me a similar experience. I want more people to get a similar experience as I have, whether through an admin side, like I did, or through a project, like I am. - Los Angeles Ambassador for Educational Access for Africa Day (ends by June 2015) for Ashinaga (あしなが育英会) - School - currently on track to graduate with a Japanese minor There is a lot that IEEE can do to improve external relations and public image, which would allow for IEEE to continue expanding and improving its existing structure. As President, I want to focus on working on our external connections with the department and companies. Internally, I want to continue to foster a community of mentorship and creation. As with all existing structures, these can be improved, and I want to work with the officer board to encourage the board to take real ownership of their own projects and events. I want to serve IEEE to be sure that everyone walks away with something gained, technical or personal. We can always improve. We can always be better. We are UCLA IEEE. External Vice President I was UX committee co-lead for (IDE)A Hacks, which was the first annual hardware hackathon hosted by UCLA IEEE & Theta Tau. As lead, I helped design and develop the front-end of the website and delegate tasks to my committee. Caroline Zhu I product-managed my project at eBay over the summer and 4 coordinated with the design intern and back-end intern to finish the product. I led my CS M117 group for our final Android project. I visualized the flow of the app and determined which parts were essential to the app and which could be added on as bonus features if we had time at the end. I then assigned tasks to each member of my group. 2012-2013: OPS & general board 2013-2014: Natcar & general board 2014-2015: Natcar & events coordinator Through my past three years of experience in IEEE, I have attended every major event hosted by IEEE. I’ve found that each I’ll be on the SWE Outreach Committee, which hosts one event was exemplary on its own, brought to life through the time and effort of previous EVPs. However, I did notice that large event (6-10 hrs of planning) each quarter. I’m also on while the events themselves were great, it seemed as though students weren’t fully aware of the benefits of the events, or ACM’s Outreach Committee, which will probably take around even the events in general. Therefore, I want to address this issue and try to bring more students into the larger events that 1-2 hrs per week. we hold. After working on and seeing the success of (IDE)A Hacks this year, I know that a larger attendance rate is possible. Internal Vice President Name Incoming Year Past Leadership Experience Past IEEE Experience What other significant time commitments do you have next year? Why do you want to run for this position? What can you contribute to IEEE as an officer? I really want to make IEEE more social and lessen the officer/member divide. During my first two years in IEEE, I felt a significant disjoint between the officers and general members. I did not feel that IEEE was really a cohesive group until becoming an officer. Thus, I would like to run for IVP as it has the best impact to help bind IEEE together. Andrew Chan In addition to my Micromouse duties, I was also club liaison Fall quarter for Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society. The role has 4 traditionally been minimal. I attempted to expand the position by creating an officer social for both groups Fall quarter. I am the current Micromouse co-lead this year. Along with Ivan, I have introduced a new and improved addition to the program this year: mini-projects. Lectures by itself are not enough; students need to show that they can apply what they learned and produce a tangible output. Mini-projects were My only significant time commitment is school. Similar to my essential to reinforce concepts to ensure that Micromouse students could show that they understood dedication this year, I will dedicate my all of my time again to lecture concepts. This subsequently sped up build time with more Micromouse people in the lab than IEEE if chosen next year. ever before. Sustained interest resulted from these mini-projects. I have dedicated my life this year for Micromouse. As with most officers, I come in on the weekends to give guidance for Micromouse students. In addition, I participated in OPS Freshman year and Micromouse Sophomore year. In addition to the duties that the IVP has with EE townhall, General Meetings, and General Board, I’d like to work with Events to provide more socials for general members. There will be bi-weekly mini-socials: dinners, Diddy Riese runs, and movie nights that are catered towards incoming freshman. Larger socials that coincide with special events: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. will will each have an EE based mini projects to add technical variety to our socials. These socials are needed to encourage people to connect with each other. It is sometimes difficult to get to know people when you are stuck in the back working on your OPS project. Thus, these recurrent socials will make the lab environment more friendly if people see a familiar face. General Board will have general bi-weekly meetings and weekly challenges so that people can socialize beyond their own General Board. General Board is great for intimate group bonding, but it would be great if the whole of the General Board got to frequently meet. Again, this will help increase group bonding. I have had a large amount of experience with administrative work as Micromouse co-lead. Organizing Micromouse requires lots of emails, scheduling, and working out problems with students. I am in the process of organizing AAMC with Ivan and have to frequently respond to questions from participants from other schools. IEEE is my home away from home. It's my go to place when I need to take a break. It's the closest thing I have to second family. I've always wanted a group of friends that shared my interest. The officer group satisfied that. Now, I want to dedicate my life next year to extending that friend group to the whole of IEEE. Ji Min Kim My most recent leadership experience lies in my work as treasurer and a general board lead in IEEE. As an officer on the IEEE board, I was able to voice my opinion on significant matters and make suggestions to better the administrative aspects of the organization. As the colead of my general board with Caroline, I encouraged my team of four to come up with creative ideas for their app designs and events for the future. We altogether came up with the idea of an internal hackathon for all the GB's to make their project ideas come into reality. 3 Aside from experiences in IEEE, I recently became one of the project managers for the Online department of the Daily Bruin. As a PM, I try to push the online developer teams to schedule their meetups and finish their projects on time. I also had leadership experience as treasurer of National Honor Society and Woodwind Captain/concert mistress of my band back in high school. I was an active member on the board as treasurer this past year. As treasurer, I gained solid experience in communicating not only with the EE department and faculty but also with other officers when it came to planning out budgets or parts orders. On the projects side, I am currently working on building and improving the Natcar with my partner, Caroline, for upcoming competitions. In the past, I have been on the General Board and finished all my projects in OPS in my first year. Next year, I plan to continue Natcar (maybe Micromouse) and develop more online projects for the Daily Bruin. Other than these commitments, I will be focusing mainly on schoolwork and the work IVP entails if I get the executive position. My main reason for deciding to run for IVP is that this position will provide me with the authority to drive the club into a bold, positive direction. As IVP, I plan to make the overall experience of being a member/officer in IEEE invigorating with more interactive meetings and events within the club. In addition, I would like to transform IEEE into a more friendly and welcoming environment for all men and women; although we are doing a fair job of welcoming everyone, we still have a lot of room for improvement. As someone who was not sure of the choice of the engineering field, I understand that many people join IEEE to gauge their interests and passions. So I believe that our jobs as officers are to create this environment as open as we can with a wide range of opportunities and make sure that we do not discourage them from pursuing the field of interest because of our lack of interaction with them or lack of resources. This holds true more strongly with the incoming female engineers. As IVP, I really hope to strengthen the general board teamwork and mentorship programs to boost confidence in a lot of the female engineers. In my case, what personally helped me confirm my decision in pursuing engineering was by looking up to female role models. Through general board and team projects, I worked along with a few strong-minded women and this working side-by-side definitely motivated me to work harder. I believe that female officers can all help other females feel more at home not by creating separate programs just for women but by sharing personal experiences and working together and being their mentors and friends. Supporting fellow IEEE members, male or female, is so important that I will work my hardest by collaborating with all officers, especially the mentorship chair, and other interested people/organizations to increase more teamwork and stronger mentoring among members within IEEE. Corporate Relations Name Matthew Nuesca Incoming Year Past Leadership Experience During my first year in college, my only leadership experience was being a part of Academic Committee for Samahang Pilipino. We are currently organizing an event for high school students that is set to happen some time in May. I was assigned into a subgroup to organize outreaching to different high schools as well as organize the transportation of high school students from different areas around LA. In high school, I didn’t really do things that would significantly benefit or be relevant to IEEE. I organized a tutoring program at a local middle 2 school near my high school. The following year, that tutoring program had to be moved into my High School rather than a middle school. I also helped my friend establish a key club chapter in our high school. Apart from that, I held positions in clubs that didn’t do much: VicePresident for National English Honors Society and Vice-President for California Scholarship Federation. In my Junior and Senior Year I also served as a ministry leader in my parish to a small group of teenagers who wanted to be confirmed into the Catholic Church. This year, I was a part of OPS. OPS was a great way to get started in hardware. It was fun to be playing around with an arduino and soldering different components onto a circuit. OPS had spurred an interest As of right now my only time commitments would probably in electrical engineering for me which led me to declare Computer Science and Engineering rather than be my academics, doing micromouse or natcar, ,and maybe just pure Computer Science. I’m a bit behind but I definitely plan on catching up and finishing off the performing for Samahang Pilipino Cultural Night. I’m program. currently debating on whether to try and run for a leadership position for Samahang Pilipino. I was also lucky to be a part of General Board under Hannah and Justin Lee. I’m glad to have met my If I do end up being elected as Corporate Relations, I will put General Board group. They definitely showed me that IEEE was more than just a club to put down on this as my 2nd highest priority with academics being the only your resume. The people in my group have shown me that IEEE can be a place to cultivate strong thing in front of it. I will do my best for what is asked of me friendships. In addition, hearing experiences from Hannah, and Justin Lee about the struggles and joys from this club. of being an engineering student have given me a better perspective as to what to expect in the next few years into my college career. OPS Co-Lead GB Co-Lead OPS Student Natcar Student GB member I am involved in Toastmasters, which has weekly 1 hour meetings from 12PM-1PM. In high school, I have been the Vice Captain as well as the Financial Lead of our school's robotics team. In those roles, I made decisions on how the team should be organized and run, as well as created a I'm the lead for Micromouse Team #9, and am also on Robert and Andrew's General Board. I've also Next year, the only other non-academic commitment I have schedule for the academic year (both for robot manufacturing as well 2 attended SPAVe and IDEAHacks, as well as a few IEEE social events, such as the water fight a few weeks is club Badminton, which meets for about 2-3 hours every as outreach events). I was also in charge of soliciting corporate ago. Tuesday and Thursday, and occasionally Saturday. sponsorships and grants, as well as providing reimbursements for team spending. In addition, I was also VP of our school's Key Club, where I helped organize volunteer events. Why do you want to run for this position? What can you contribute to IEEE as an officer? After my first year as an IEEE member, I was able to see how big of an influence IEEE can be to others. One of its major selling points to me is it’s ability to spur creativity. Programs like the Student Initiative Project, GB projects and IDEA Hacks are examples that represent the spirit of creativity. I definitely want IEEE to continue this spirit of creativity. I believe the best way for me to help contribute is to run as Corporate Relations. I have a bit of experience in outreaching due to the different activities in high school and in my first year in college. The biggest reason for me running is that becoming an officer will help me grow. I’ve had experience in outreaching, but honestly I’m not the most persuasive or outgoing person. Being in corporate relations puts me in a place out of my comfort zone and will push my boundaries. I definitely want IEEE to get enough funding to continue what it has been doing, and so I would be pressured into doing my best to persuade companies. As a result, I would be able to develop my marketing and networking skills while helping out IEEE. Ever since last year, I have wanted to become Corporate Relations chair as evidenced by my participation in several of the IDEA Hacks Corporate team meetings. You know the poison (Neuro) that Robert and Kamal survived? I brought in that sponsor which proved essential for keeping everyone up. This past year I was one of the OPS Co-Leads and one of the most important aspects of being a lead for me this year was the ability to communicate effectively. I believe that is one of the most important qualities of a administrative officer, and especially so as Corporate Relations Chair. As Vice President of Public Relations for Toastmasters, a public speaking club, I am confident in my ability to communicate with our sponsors. Lastly, I have gathered together what I thought worked this year and what didn't. For the specifics of my overall approach, I hope you find my speech and Q&A illuminating. I want to run for an officer position so that I can get more involved in UCLA IEEE, and get a better understanding of how the club runs. Because I helped my robotics team apply for sponsorships high school, I feel that the Corporate Relations positions is how I can best contribute to IEEE. I also really enjoyed IDEAHacks, and want to make it a more popular event next year. In addition, I liked my General Board experience this year, and want to provide that to students next year as well. Events Coordinator Kathleen Chan 2 California Junior Scholarship Federation President AVID lead tutor OPS General Board Leon Ho I have been on the general board for the club Future Business Leaders of America, in which I had to collaborate with a team of students and our advisors to run our school chapter. This involved managing the logistics of the club and preparing our chapter for the annual regional, state, and national competitions. Another club that I was involved with is French club, where I held the position of treasurer. I had to I am currently working in the OPS program, which deals with the fundamental skills of electrical 3 work with our club’s budget and make sure that it was being used for engineering. I have also worked on several small projects in the lab, including my final EE3 project. activities that promoted French culture. I was also the business manager of the school newspaper, which included responsibilities such as negotiating sponsorship with business owners and organizing advertising packages. My experience also includes being a teacher who coordinated with program director to build and teach a 10 week geometry summer program. Foundations Choreography None As part of IEEE, I made two of my closest friends here in UCLA at one of the events that IEEE held. I would like to run for the events coordinator position to continue holding these events, and maybe even hold more social events for people to just get together and expand their networks. As events coordinator, I can contribute new ideas to the organization, such as different events for people to meet others and hopefully make close friends like I have. As an officer, I am willing to put in time to make this already beautiful club full of beautiful people continue to grow. I am running for the Events Coordinator position because I want to be more involved with IEEE and help other students have the same great experience that I have as a member. With this position, I want to organize social events that allow members to interact more closely with one another. Along with social events, I also want to try to get people interested in a buddy system where members can hang out with each other and participate in competitions. I believe that building strong bonds between members is one of the most important part of being a part of IEEE, since communication is an essential skill that engineers must develop in order to succeed. I also want to expose members to the professionalism that they are or will be exposed to after college. By holding workshops and clinics that revolve around resume building, interviewing, and even dress apparel, this will allow members to thrive in the workplace. Another way to promote this professionalism is have members give a presentation on projects that they are working on. This will improve their communication skills and better prepare them for the future. As an IEEE officer, I will dedicate my time and effort to fulfilling my responsibilities, which goes beyond booking rooms and ordering foods. I will do whatever I can to assist both officers and members and also help maintain IEEE as a distinguished club where people can pursue their interest in electrical engineering. Treasurer Name Incoming Year Past Leadership Experience Past IEEE Experience What other significant time commitments do you have next year? Why do you want to run for this position? What can you contribute to IEEE as an officer? I worked as a volunteer at a non profit organization called med share where I worked with a group to organize donated hospital supplies into separate bins, which will then be sent out to third-world countries. Volunteering here has helped me develop my organizational skills and decision making because I had to be able to sort out different pieces of equipment by figuring out what the piece of equipment does and in what category it would fit best. Rommel Castro Furthermore, I worked as a volunteer at a camp called Joni and Friends for children with disabilities. I guided children throughout the camp and different activities over the course of a whole week. 2 Volunteering here helped me to be responsible and more thoughtful in my decisions because I was completely responsible for the children I took care of for the whole week. I had to be able to stay on top of the schedule, help set up different events, and communicate with not only my fellow volunteers, but the children campers. Joni and Friends really taught me how to communicate my ideas in a simple and understandable manner. I am currently a part of the OPS program where I am learning important technical skills for electrical engineers through various projects. I am also part of the general board for IEEE under Hannah Chou and As of right now, I do not seem to have any other significant Justin Lee's group. Within general board, I sat in on a few officer meetings, attended S-PAVe, and time commitments. started a project with my group. These two programs helped me to see the friendly and hard-working environment within IEEE along with glimpses of life as an officer. I want to run for treasurer because I want to be more involved in IEEE and believe that I can do a good job at this position. I would like to try to apply my organizational skills to money and find the best ways to manage it. Furthermore, I look to be able to communicate to other officers effectively and be able to provide the information they need. I want to learn, through experience, the art of handling money. As an officer, I would be able to contribute my reliability and flexibility in order to make sure plans go smoothly. I can provide my organizational skills along with my relaxed, yet focused attitude. I’m the guy who will always find a way to get things done and no matter what. However, I am also the guy who will ask for help if he needs it. In addition, I was part of the national honors society in my high school where I tutored kids who needed help with different subjects. This helped me further improve my communication and ability to get my ideas across in different ways. Secretary Tien Le For the past two years, I was a part of the staff for a yield event called SEA Admit (Southeast Asian Admit weekend) that happens every April. Last year I was a family head for 8 high school students, and this year I was one of the Outreach/Volunteer coordinators for the program. As outreach coordinator, I was responsible for organizing a phone I have been involved in IEEE projects the past 3 years. My freshman year I did OPS, and my second and 4 banking staff of around 50 SEA Admit staff members to call a list of third year I participated in Natcar. around 500 students to encourage them to apply. This involved conducting phone banking training sessions to go over the prepared scripts and organizing the list of ~110 students attending the event. There is nothing set in stone yet, but I will probably be involved with other organizations from time to time during the year. I will not be involved in anything that would become a major conflict with my roles as an officer. IEEE has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have had in college. The IEEE lab is truly a home away from home for me, and I truly can not imagine my college experience without being a part of IEEE. My hope is that I will be able to give back and allow future generations of students to find the same welcoming community here that I had found as a freshman. As an officer and as the secretary, I would try to expand the outreaching efforts of IEEE so that students are aware of available opportunities. I think a natural extension of the weekly E-mail newsletters would be to post newsletters on the IEEE facebook page. Publicity Jeffrey Chen Christine Truong Throughout high school, I was extensively involved with our studentrun television station, MSJTV. Over the 3 years I was in the organization, I served as a staff member, Director of Videography, and Executive Producer. As a leader, I led a team of directors and staff in meeting strict production schedules for our monthly news segments (viewed by thousands of students each month). Through fundraising, grant applications, and ad revenue, I helped MSJTV raise over $4000 to support operating costs. In terms of those skills directly applicable to publicity chair, my experiences in MSJTV gave me extensive hands2 on experience in media distribution, graphic design, and digital broadcasting. I was also involved in my high school's local TEDx chapter, TEDxMSJHS, for 2 years as a webmaster and technical design lead. As technical design lead, I was in charge of a team tasked with coordinating sound systems, video coverage, and all other technical needs on the day of the event. At the conclusion of the event, I was also responsible for communicating with TED officials to close out the TEDx event and produce post-event materials (photos, talk videos, etc...) while adhering to strict TED guidelines. Green Representative for Reiber 3S Publicity Chair/Senior Representative for CSF (high school) 3 Design/Management Editor of Yearbook Staff (high school) Member of Cerritos High Model United Nations team Over the past year, I've gained extensive knowledge in both the administrative and technical (projectsbased) sides of UCLA IEEE as a member of Aravind and Jyrrl's General Board team. Whereas Aravind's technical leadership and role as OPS lead has given me insight into the what it's like to lead an IEEE project, Jyrrl's administrative role has shown me the demands of serving as publicity chair. Having seen the organization from both sides, I believe I have the experience necessary to serve as an effective officer. In addition to General Board, I have also gotten involved by attending corporate infosessions, participating in officer meetings, taking photos at various IEEE events, tabling at Engineering Open house, and helping Jyrrl out with the publicity board (finally!) in Boelter Hall. Though I have not yet finalized my plans for next year, I am currently looking at participating in either Micromouse or Natcar next year. I also plan on remaining involved in the UCLA Rocket Project. Having already participated in the Rocket Project this year, I am fully aware of the necessary time commitment, and do not believe there will be any conflicts with my duties as publicity chair should I be selected. In any case, I fully expect to make serving as an officer in IEEE my top priority, and will make every effort to bring to the position the same level of quality and professionalism as IEEE has shown me this year. OPS program Schoolwork, another IEEE program, sleep Understanding an organization's breadth and reach is a key factor in being able to properly promote it. Being a part of IEEE this year has shown me just how large its impact and reach on the UCLA community is, and as such, I would love to be a part of the officer board that makes it happen. Given my extensive background in media, I believe I have the right skill set to be an effective publicity chair for this club. As a hopeful publicity chair, I have already come up with a number of key initiatives to enhance UCLA IEEE's reputation and image on campus. Two of these include: consolidation and centralization of all social media channels, and a renewed focus on building the Youtube channel (cue "we have a Youtube channel?"). Coming from a freshman who was entirely new to UCLA IEEE less than a year ago, the organization has already done an excellent job in presenting itself to new students as a professional organization dedicated to providing its members with a wholesome UCLA Engineering experience. I have the drive to make IEEE an even better-respected organization than it already is, and it is this combination of proven publicity experience and passion for the organization that I believe makes me the best candidate for the position. I want to run for this position in particular because I feel like I am the most qualified for this position than the others. I have past experience in making posters for a club and taking picture for yearbook. As an officer, I can contribute my skills as a designer and my willingness to get work done. Mentorship/Alumni Relations Name Tim Jo Incoming Year Past Leadership Experience Last year I was the Professional Fraternity Council chair of Phi Delta Epsilon Medical Fraternity. While one of the objectives as the PFC chair was to foster interfraternal bonds between other professional fraternities, my other role as PFC was to focus on the professional development of our members. As the PFC, I coordinated many events geared towards preparing others for the future, such as resume workshops, interview workshops, medical school workshops, and 4 other workshops. Being the PFC has taught me how to effectively run workshops and engage others in learning about professional development. Another one of my roles as PFC was to make connection between the younger and older members of the fraternity. As the mentorship and alumni relations chair for IEEE, I will continue to hold these workshops as well as ensure that the younger members of IEEE will have a connection to the older members for guidance. Past IEEE Experience What other significant time commitments do you have next year? Over the last year I have been involved in many different aspects of IEEE. Currently, I am part of Hannah and Justin Lee's general board. Hannah and Justin have both been amazing mentors to me over the past two quarters, and have made me realize how important it is for younger students to have guidance and support from upperclassmen. As a part of their general board I have attended weekly meetings to I will not have any foreseeable significant time commitments discuss our plans for building a set of tower speakers for the IEEE lab, which will hopefully be completed next year so all of my extra time can be dedicated to helping by the end of this year. In addition, I am part of one of the teams in NATCAR. In the past I have attended IEEE become an even more amazing organization. all of the IEEE general meetings, S-PAV, and all the meetings required for NATCAR. I have also attended several IEEE socials, including IEEE beach day, where we were able to bond with members of IEEE from USC. Also, I have attended several officer meetings over the past couple weeks and have a better understanding of the role that each officer plays. Why do you want to run for this position? What can you contribute to IEEE as an officer? Mentorship has always been a really important concept to me. I have been supported by mentors my entire life and I have learned so many valuable lessons from them. Throughout high school I privately tutored over 10 students, which has taught me the important lesson that mentorship is a two-way street. As a mentor, you not only give guidance and knowledge to your mentees, but you also receive something that is just as valuable. What you receive is the satisfaction of knowing that you made their lives better and that you contributed to their growth as an individual. As an IEEE officer I will not only continue Derek's legacy but I will also bring new ideas to the table. I will continue the alumni newsletter, where we email IEEE alumni and update them on what has been going on throughout each quarter. I will also continue as the representative to MentorSEAS to connect freshman Electrical Engineering students with mentors. In addition to these things I will also collaborate with other organizations to hold workshops for professional development and OPS to help with student bonding. As mentorship chair I would work on improving the turnout to events such as workshops which normally have low turnout rates by making them both engaging and helpful at the same time.
