WELCOME MESSAGE
Indonesia is a meeting point of several tectonic plates, making it one
of the most seismically active areas on the planet with a long history
of powerful eruptions and earthquakes. Like almost every country
within the Asia Pacific region, Indonesia lies on what is commonly
known as the “Ring of Fire” making it very prone to volcanic disasters.
On behalf of the Indonesia Society of Landscape Architects (ISLA),
it is with great pleasure that I invite you to participate in 2015 IFLA
APR Congress to be held in Mataram, Lombok Island, Indonesia from
7th to 9th September, 2015. The theme of the 2015 congress is “Future
Mountain and Volcanoscape: Creativity to prosperity”. The congress
schedule will include seminars, excursions and an anniversary.
The 2015 IFLA APR Congress will be held in conjunction with
the celebration of 200 years of the largest volcanic eruption recorded
in the history of modern civilization. This occurred at
Mount Tambora (4.300 m) in 1815. This volcano totally created new
landscapes, buried three kingdoms, killed approximately 17,000
people and produced global anomalous climate and political impacts.
The organizing committee is currently planning an interesting congress
program combining the opportunity for participants and accompanying
persons to experience an enjoyable educational and social cultural
program with memorable visits and cultural performances.
We ask that you register for this Congress as soon as possible.
Until then, we hope to see you at the Congress
And welcome to Indonesia.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT CHARETTE
(1) Brief
The charrette is proposed for undergraduate or master students
of landscape architecture and the program will be directed
by senior landscape architects. In the charrette, the students will
be asked to apply landscape design involving landscape restoration
and regeneration of Sembalun Highland, Lombok Island.
Students will receive information about the charrette project and
visit the site in Mt Rinjani National Park on the first day (soft
trekking) then continue with workshop activities. A condition of
the activity is that all work is done by hand (no computers
allowed).
The charrette is a fantastic opportunity for students to work
rapidly in teams within a predetermined time period, meeting a
deadline, with each team working furiously right to the end to
apply the finishing touches. Each team will beguided by senior
landscape architect. In the last day each team will present their
works to a panel of respected international landscape architects
and the audienceas well as providing the opportunity to engage in
cultural exchange and discussion during this event.

PART 9. GENERAL INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION ON INDONESIA
Climate
Indonesia climate is highly complex. The whole archipelago is tropical,
with temperatures at sea level always between 210 C and 330 C,
although cooler in the mountains. In theory, the year divides into
a wet and a dry season depending on the effects of the two major
winds, the monsoons that drive wet or dry air towards the islands.
Humidity is between 60 and 100 percent.
Clothing
Dress is generally informal with lounge suit for official functions
or batik.
Currency
The unit of currency is the Rupiah (Rp.). At the time of printing this
announcement US$ is equivalent to approximately Rupiah 13.000.
Immigration
All travelers to Indonesia must be in possession of a passport valid for
at least six month with proof of onward destination.
Customs
Customs regulations allow, per adult, a maximum of two liter
of alcoholic beverages, 200 cigarettes, 50 cigar and 100 grams
of tobacco and reasonable amount of perfumes. Photographic
equipment, laptops, radios are admitted provided they taken out
on departure.
There is no restriction on the import of foreign currencies and
travelers cheques. However, the import or export of Indonesia
currency exceeding Rp. 50,000,000- is prohibited. Drug trafficking and
possession there of are serious offences.
Health
International certificates of valid smallpox, cholera, and yellow fever
vaccinations are required only for travelers coming from infected
area.

Manners
Hand shaking is customary for man and woman on introduction and
greeting with smile are national characteristics. The use on the left
hand to give or receive is taboo, also crooking your finger to call
someone is considered impolite.
A BRIEF INFORMATION ON LOMBOK
Lying 35 km east of Bali at its closest point, Lombok is inevitably
compared with its better-known western neighbour, although the two
differ physically, culturally, linguistically and historically. While
Lombok has less wide spread tourist facilities, sparser public transport
and simpler accommodation, things are changing rapidly. Lombok is
simply not an extension of Bali with the majority of the population
being indigenous Muslim Sasak people. Nevertheless, approximately 10
per cent of the islands’ 2.5 million inhabitants are Balinese and this
influence is evident in their distinctive temples and house hold
architecture.
Geographically, Lombok is described as ‘roughly circular’ and is 80 km
long and 70 km wide. The island divides into three geographical
regions. The mountainous north is dominated by the awesome bulk of
Mt. Rinjani at 3,726m it is one of the highest peaks in Indonesia.
Trekking at least part of the way up Rinjani is the reason many tourist
come to Lombok. The central plains, about 25 km wide, contain
the most population centers and most productive agricultural areas as
well as the major road on the island linking the west and the east
coast. Attractive villages perched in the southern foot hills of
Mt. Rinjani and are easily accessible. Many of the island’s craft
centers are also in or near this cross island corridor. Further south is
a range of dry, low inland hills, around 500m high, behind the
sweeping bays and pure white sand of the southern beaches.
Several groups of islands lie off the Lombok coast. The trio of Gili
Islands namely: Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air off
the north west coast of Lombok are the best known to tourists being a
long time favorite places for backpackers in search of sea, sun and
sand in simple surroundings.

Getting to Lombok Island
BY AIR: Lombok Praya International Airport in Mataram is the only
airport on Lombok. The only direct international flights are from
Singapore although there are regular internal or domestic flights.
BY SEA: Boat is the other way of getting to Lombok Island, which can
be accessed from Bali, Sumbawa, and other islands.
BY BUS: Transportation by bus can be accessed from Java, Bali,
Sumbawa and Flores, Surabaya, Bima, Jakarta, Yogyakarta and other
city.
GENERAL INFORMATION OF MAIN THEME
Mount Tambora Greets the World
Mount Tambora (or Tomboro) is 2,851m high and is an active strato
volcano located on the island of Sumbawa, Nusa Tenggara Barat
Province, Indonesia. Eruptions that occurred in April 1815 became
the largest eruption since the eruption of Lake Taupo in 181 AD.
Previously, Mt Tambora had a height of 4882m and was the second
highest
peak
in
Indonesia
after
Mount
Jaya
Wijaya.
However, the enormous eruption eliminated nearly half its original
height.

Radio carbon dating techniques have established that Mt Tambora has
erupted three (3) times prior to 1815, including:
• The first eruption at 39 910 BC, (± 200 years)
• The second eruption at 3,050 BC
• The third eruption on 740 BC, (± 150 years).

All three eruptions have similar characteristics including erupting in
the main hole, with the exception of the third eruption that had no
pyroclastic flows.
Volcanic eruptions in 1815, classified into a 7 Volcanic
Explosivity Index (VEI), with bursts of tephra of 1.6 × 1011 m³.
Characteristics of eruptions were also included loss of life, damage to
soil and land, the tsunami and the collapse of the caldera. The fourth
eruption affected global climate for a long time. The Tambora activity
ceased on 15th July, 1815.
The eruption of Mount Tambora is the most powerful volcanic
eruption recorded in the modern era. At the time that Mt Tambora
erupted, an area within a radius of approximately 600 miles fell into
darkness for almost a week. The sound of the eruption could be heard
2000km away and the earth's temperature decreases by some degree
due to volcanic ash blocking sunlight for several months so that
the earth became cold. This impacted on Europe and North America
who experienced a long winter. While Australia and South Africa
received snowin summer. This event is known as "The Year without
Summer".

8. Mount Rinjani National Park
Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR) is a type of mountain rain
forest and savanna ecosystem located on the Lombok Island, Nusa
Tenggara Barat. TNGR was designated a National Park by
the Minister of Forestry 280/Kpts-II/1997 and has an area of 40,000
hectares. According to information obtained from the Department
of Mines and Energy of the Province of Nusa Tenggara Barat, in
the past Mt Rinjani reached a height of approximately 5,000m
above sea level. At the time of Pre-history (>1.8 million years ago)
the Rinjani area comprised a deposition of sedimentary rocks.
During the Pleistocene era (<1.8 Million years ago) on going
volcanic tectonic activity led to a lava eruption.

During the demolition phase of the volcano, Mt Rinjani has formed
a caldera that is mostly filled with water, now a lake called Lake
Segara Anak. In the Sasak language this means “small sea”. The
lake is located at approximately 2,010 m above sea level and has a
depth of around 230m, with a crescent-shaped area of
approximately 1,100 ha. Lake water temperature varies from
the other side to the other side. The water of the lake has a very
strong sulfur smell. Due to continuous volcanic tectonic a new cone
volcano called Mt Baru Jari (± 2,376 m asl) appeared in the middle

of the caldera. Mt Baru Jari is believed to grow taller each year.
Historical eruptions of Mt Rinjani began in 1847 and continued until
2004 during this time it has erupted nine (9) times mostly inside
the caldera, although the crater of Mt Rinjani had never recorded
an eruption. The average rainfall in this region is 2,000 ml
per year.
