The poster session, lunches and all coffee services will take place in the Exhibitors Hall. The Social Events will climax with the Closing Banquet that will be remembered for a lifetime. All of this would not be possible without the help of our corporate sponsors and I’m grateful to those companies that have already provided their generous support. Please considering being a Congress Sponsor at the highest level possible. Complete instructions on submitting a paper for a podium and/or poster presentation along with submission deadlines are included in this Call for Papers. I encourage you to contribute to the success of this meeting by submitting an abstract for consideration by the Congress Abstract Review Committee. Our international list of expert reviewers, with diverse scientific backgrounds, has been carefully selected so that each topic area will be reviewed by at least 3 academic or industrial experts. With this announcement, the Call for Papers is now officially opened! Please visit our website at www.ifscc2016.com where more information will be detailed as it becomes available. Again, welcome and I look forward to seeing you in Orlando in October, 2016! See you in Orlando! Guy Padulo Chair, 2016 IFSCC Organizing Committee 3 29th IFSCC Congress | Innovate • Inspire • Imagine Call for Papers On behalf of the 2015 Society of Cosmetic Chemists’ Committee on Scientific Affairs (COSA), it is my pleasure to invite the submission of papers for the 29th IFSCC Congress. As we’re expecting hundreds of abstracts describing original work of the highest caliber, the entire abstract management submission process will be run through the ScholarOne system. COSA will notify authors regarding abstract acceptance and the form of presentation (podium or poster) by January 31, 2016. As you know, the theme for the Congress is Beyond Dreams into New Frontiers: Inspire, Imagine, Innovate. COSA encourages you to submit your original work that you deem would be of high interest to our international community. As a guide, please consider submission of papers from the following topics: Sun Protection & Beyond Sun protection plays an important role in maintaining healthy skin with timeless beauty. Submissions in this category may focus on increasing our understanding of the impact of solar exposure on skin health, biology, aging, and beauty as well as breakthrough strategies for enhanced sun protection, new photo stabilization strategies, novel measurement techniques and fundamental studies on sunscreen film structure as it relates to protection. Additional areas of interest include the psychology of beauty, particularly as it relates to encouraging sunscreen usage and bringing sun protection to under-protected populations as well as impacts of sun exposure on psychology and well-being. Furthermore, current developments in photo-stability and high SPF/nonwhitening are also welcome. Creating Loyal Scents — The Science of Fragrances IMAGINE How chemistry and nature combine to create fragrances that affect our mood, memory and more. Submissions in this category should focus on topics inclusive of aromatherapy, olfaction, synthetic vs natural, sensory, biology and aesthetics. Additional areas of interest include formulation challenges, stability and innovative packaging concepts. Other suggested areas of submissions are related to the evaluation of emotion and the sensorial appeal of fragrances. 4 Inspired by Nature — Biomimicry Biomimicry is an approach to innovation that seeks sustainable solutions to human challenges by emulating nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies. With 3.8 billion years of experimentation, nature has solved some highly relevant problems including physical attachment, based on the hooks found on burrs spine (aka Velcro), selfcleaning surfaces based on super hydrophobic coating found on the Lotus leaf, glues that bond underwater based on mussel adhesion proteins, or the development of light, but strong protective armour based on spider silk. Submissions for this category should showcase nature inspired technological solutions to cosmetic problems. Emerging Market Trends and Insights The personal care and beauty industry is driven by consumer demand and innovative technologies. Submissions in this section should highlight the latest technologies, from either a specialty ingredient or finished formulation perspective, and also examine new applications and untapped markets. Further, this category can also include market analysis and emerging trends amongst Millennials and Untapped markets. Beauty with the Magic of Colors Flawless beauty is very essential as it is the ultimate wish for anyone to achieve a portrait type look without the help of a makeup artist. How does a change in color change who we appear to be? How does a product or technology make us look better? Submission in this category may focus on Color cosmetics, Nail Color, Lip Color, Eye Color, Tattoos etc. Additional areas of interest to include how to achieve full coverage and still maintain natural look, novel pigments with surface treatments or with skin refractive index matching, color fidelity, shade forgiveness technology, long-wear technologies, micro-encapsulation and optical measurement techniques. 29th IFSCC Congress | Innovate • Inspire • Imagine Marketing to the Senses — Product Creation Based on Sensory Appeal The sensorial properties of cosmetic products play an integral role in its acceptance in the market place. Submissions in this category should highlight product innovation with specific sensorial properties in mind. Additional topics may include aspects of sensorial measurement including, but not limited to, panel testing as well as instrumental analyses that can be correlated with sensorial appeal. Contributions focusing on the rheological profile of novel materials and formulations will be most welcome. Breakthrough Concepts in Skin Biology and Microbiome Will probiotic skin care products be the next new thing? Due to the advent of high-throughput molecular methods, researchers have made significant advances in understanding the skin’s microbiome. Of the organs in the body, the skin contains one of the more complex, microbiota signatures. New data regarding the role of microbiota in skin biology and disease is rapidly emerging. Submissions for this session should focus on basic research in skin microbiology, the application of microbiology data in product development, or translational research that correlates microbiome data to skin pathology. The session may also include presentations that demonstrate a systems biology approach to understanding skin biology. (Graphic Courtesy of Broad Institute / Steven H. Lee / Studio Graphiko) The Balancing Act — Regulatory Compliance vs Innovation In today’s heavily regulated climate, innovative companies are called upon to come up with not only new claims, new chemicals and new formulations, but to also have their products “globally acceptable.” Submissions in this category can include practical suggestions as to how to stay globally current in this ever-changing area, ways to balance both innovation and compliance, and comparisons/contrasts of acceptable label claims or regulations in different areas of the world. Sustainability — Cosmetics for a Greener Future Sustainability is here to stay. It’s about product innovation and business growth and formulators can make a huge difference. Designing sustainability into cosmetic formulations is not only the right thing to do; it can confer a competitive advantage. Using ethically sourced and bio-diverse ingredients is just one example. In addition to sustainable formulation, submissions in this area can fall under the broader umbrella of sustainable manufacturing, packaging, global regulatory guidelines and the challenges in the certification process. Other suggested topic areas include analytical measurements of natural ingredients as well as guidelines on how to evaluate natural products. Hair Care Technology Technologies related to hair care include novel technologies for hair repair, hair styling, hair color management, hair detergency, and hair biology. Submissions in this category may focus on increasing our understanding of the hair structure from a biophysical and biological standpoint. Additional areas of interest are in the development of new technologies to prevent hair damage from chemical treatments and in the prevention of hair color loss. Hair thermal styling is also of great interest as well as novel techniques and molecules for use in hair styling. Delivery Systems and Cosmetic Vehicles For many cosmetic products, delivery of the active ingredient is key to achieving the skin benefit. Cosmetic formulations may be leave-on or wash-off or even wash-in. The formulation may be designed to enhance or inhibit skin penetration. Submissions in this category may include advances in skin delivery systems, colloidal science, nano-technology, and novel product forms. Submissions may also include devices that aid delivery as well as in vitro and/or in vivo methods and models for evaluating delivery. Beauty has no Borders It’s a small world after all and the quest for beauty is common everywhere. But skin and hair structure and function vary greatly across ethnicity and developing cosmetics to meet the beauty needs of different populations is an exciting and challenging field. We invite submissions under the broad topic of ethnicity and cosmetics ranging from advances in our understanding about the similarities and differences to product innovation for a diverse world.
