Global demand and consumption of agricultural crops for food, feed,
and fuel is increasing at a rapid pace. Increase in area and /or productivity of
crops are the options to meet the growing demand. Of the two options,
increasing productivity on existing agricultural land is preferable as it avoids
greenhouse gas emissions and the large-scale disruption of existing
ecosystems associated with bringing new land into production. Development
and widespread use of new farming technologies can help in improvement in
yield. Crop yields have benefited the most from plant breeding, which includes
the use of improved hybrids and varieties. Improved variety alone can add
20?25% to increased productivity, even if other components of production
remain the same. This indicates scope to agronomic management for
increasing productivity of crops per unit of land.
In Chhattisgarh, net sown area is 4.828 m ha and the gross sown
area is 5.788 m ha. About 80% of the population of the state is rural and the
main livelihood of the villagers is agriculture and agriculture-based small
enterprises. Rice is the predominant crop of Chhattisgarh, occupying an area
of around 3.65 million ha in kharif season however, productivity remains 2041
kg ha-1 while potential yield of improved varieties is more than 3000 kg ha-1
indicating the further scope for harnessing the potential yield of rice. Demand
for high-value commodities such as; fruits, vegetables, livestock products,
fish, poultry etc., is increasing faster than food grains owing to increase in per
capita income. Majority of smallholders would like to adopt non-farm activities
to augment their incomes. Unpredicted weather condition; erratic rainfall, hail
storm, incidence of insect pest and diseases, instable price and non-availability
of approachable market further forced to smallholders to migrate for nonfarm activities rather drudgeric agriculture. This is the great challenge before
researchers to develop technologies suitable under changing climate scenario
at farmers' management. However, agronomy has been placed secondary in
agriculture science, but the pressure for raising yield ceilings for food security
in an environmentally sustainable manner, requires a new generation of
agronomists to take up the challenge. This workshop is therefore organized
with aim to discuss and document radical issues and thrust areas for future
strategic research and their effective extension.
