There is no cure for this disease. Efforts must be made solely on disease prevention. Once infected, the tree must be removed and destroyed immediately to prevent further infestation. The diseased palm should be incinerated or placed in a landfill only. Lastly a new Canary Island Date Palm cannot be planted where the old was removed because the disease lives in the soil and any root mass left behind. The new one will only become infected, so a different variety should be planted. Homeowners must talk with their landscapers to prevent the spread of the disease and to take the necessary steps and precautions of properly feeding the palm to keep it healthy. Steve Small from LMP reported that there may be two major problems developing with the palm trees – one in the pool area and one with homeowners’ trees. It is highly suspected that the large palms in the pool area have a disease called But Rod. Bud Rod is primarily caused by too much water. The palms planted around the pool are arid soil plants that Steve presented a have been planted in More testing is being done to see whether the proposal to plant 50 a heavy, clay palm trees in the pool area are infected with Bud Holly trees and 50 Red swampy soil. F r a n k r e p o r t e d t h a t A r ms t r o n g Environmental, the company that does the lake maintenance, made a presentation to the Board at its January meeting. The company was to present again at the February meeting to inform the Board whether his recommendation to get a permit for fish that would help to clean the lake would be approved by the county authorities. He was also to present whether aquatic plants would help with the cleaning effort. Frank’s recommendation to work with a different company was not taken up by the Board at their meeting. Frank mentioned that no further action has occurred with the kitchen permits, as the application is still with the CDD management company to be submitted at the same time as permits for the new tennis courts. Frank reported that the Board at its January meeting did not discuss his recommendation that Welch Tennis Courts build two new tennis courts and a practice pad in the field across the roadway from the present ones. The Board forwarded to the February meeting any discussion on the tennis courts installation. Carrie reported that the pricing for the newly THE ISLANDER ۩ IKarePublishing.com designed sail shade for the playground area came in at $12,000 above the budgeted amount. The committee discussed that Carrie should submit the plan for the Board to discuss at its February meeting and request that the needed additional funds be taken from the allotted money for the tennis courts. With the costs that Frank estimated for the tennis courts, it appears that there will be enough money to cover the additional cost of the sail shade. After discussion about installing a volleyball court, Frank was asked to put together a recommendation for placement behind the existing tennis courts and provide a list of costs for installing a sand court. Committee members asked for an update on the inoperable pool slide. Frank said that in his discussion with the company that manufactured and installed the slide that they felt positively about repairing it to satisfaction. He is awaiting written documentation to take to the Board meeting in February. The committee discussed the continuance or dissolution of the LAF committee. With the new Board taking a more hands on approach, it was expressed that there was no need for LAF to discuss and make plans when the Board was again debating the decisions at their meeting. Members expressed that they April 2015 felt that the Board may not realize the value of the committee and committee structure, and that the Board should be asked what they want from the committee. In the past, if monies were appropriated in a budget item, the committee could suggest, plan and proceed with the changes needed within that budgeted item. If the Board is going to be more hands on, then maybe the committee is not needed. All on the committee felt that their input was helpful. Mylitta Butler planned to attend the next Board meeting to discuss our and their roles with the Board. It was recommended that a request be submitted to the Board for one of its members to sit as a liason to LAF. It was felt that having a Board member sit with the committee would be invaluable to both the committee and the Board. Bob Woodards, CDD Board member, has since volunteered to be the LAF committee Board liason. Regularly scheduled meetings of the LAF Committee are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 10:00 a.m. in the Beach Club. If you have comments or suggestions for the LAF committee, please e-mail them to: [email protected].
