Honolulu Chapter 56 / www.Ikebana-‐Hawaii.org Issue No. 78, April/May 2015 Message from Chapter 56 President Aloha everyone, Spring is here. Can you sense a fresh start in the air? Board member Beryl-Ono Stapleton has been torturing me with photos of "hanami 2015" from a recent trip. Don't we all want to jump on a plane to Japan at this time of year and share the joy of cherry blossoms? Here is some joy, and some sorrow, I'd like to share with you... Splendors... With support provided by a grant from Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, our annual Splendors of Ikebana exhibition will be held at the Honolulu Museum of Art School ("Linekona") on May 22-25, Memorial Day Weekend. Plan to bring a special dessert to the Splendors Preview Party on May 21 and sign up for the pupu party on Sunday, May 24 at the exhibition hall. Invite family and friends to celebrate the efforts of exhibitors and share the beauty of this special gift to our community. Please join me in thanking our outstanding Exhibition Committee headed by Chair Earl Shimabukuro, assisted by Charmaine Yee-Hollison, Val Ford and Grace Kam. As our publicist, Beryl Ono-Stapleton has made a monumental effort to get welldeserved media coverage for the event. Membership renewal... April begins our season of I.I. Chapter 56 membership renewal. Don't delay in re-upping to participate in one of the most value-laden cultural organizations in Hawaii. Have you invited a guest to one of our events? Why not tap them to become a member? We require no qualifications -- just a love of beauty. And remember, Chapter 56 membership in the upcoming 2015-2016 year is a requirement for attending the always-unforgettable Ikebana International World Convention in 2017. Something different... In April we are trying a new type of workshop -- a garden tour -- thanks to the fertile imagination of our Program Committee. This year's is sold out, but watch for a repeat event next spring. School Outreach 3-year grant... Hooray! Thanks to a generous grant from The Garden Club of Honolulu, we will be able to extend our high school ikebana outreach program for the next THREE YEARS! Kudos to our creative and faithful Grants Committee, particularly Tim Donahue, for providing the necessary information in time to submit an application, and right in the middle of the Christmas season. Don't miss Shangri La - the Flower Show, presented by The Garden Club of Honolulu at the Honolulu Museum of Art on May 8-10. Floral designs will abound. Admission to the Flower Show is free for museum members and $10 for non-members. A sad announcement... We note the passing of Sensei Alice Masuda, member of the Toin Misho school of ikebana. Alice was on the chapter's Board for a number of years and participated in our activities for many years until her health declined. Special condolences go out to Board member Susan Hirate, a relative of Alice's. In friendship through flowers, Gail Ichiyo Center Piece Arrangement Workshop Karen Kirk Iwalani Barbazon, Ichiyo School Sensei and I.I. Atlanta Chapter member, demonstrated on Sunday, March 1, 2015, how to create a symmetrical centerpiece arrangement with utmost patience. Prior to her demonstration, she created two asymmetrical accompanying arrangements. Using pink astromeria, white freesia, and babies' breath, participants created centerpieces with their wooden sake cups and hana dome created from chopsticks. The hana dome were produced by ikebana husband, Jim Barbazon. Twenty-‐five participants created arrangements with these beautiful flowers. Co-‐chair Pat Kimoto provided wonderful dessert snacks complimented by Charmaine Yee-‐Hollison's treats. Washington Middle School Pat Kubo On February 12, Bette Uyeda organized an ikebana lesson for Neal Takamoto’s class at Washington Middle School. Bette presented a review of the history of ikebana and the Ohara School. Gwen Nagata did a demonstration of an ikebana arrangement. Also assisting were Merle Hashimoto and Patricia Kubo. The Japanese language students created beautiful arrangements in coffee mugs using mums, ferns, baby’s breath and papyrus stems. Busy Hands, Big Ideas Let your child discover the wonders of ikebanathe art of Japanese flower arranging. The Honolulu Museum of Art and Ikebana International-Honolulu (I.I.) have joined forces to offer youth ikebana lessons. Local ikebana teachers share their expertise and joy of flower arranging with youth grades 2-12. Students take home a flower arrangement after each class. Six classes for $100.
