We have a set form, but the content changes for each service. The content is governed by the church year calendar and lectionary (a system of scripture readings). Sunday worship is organized around the proclamation of the Word of God and the celebration of the Lord’s Supper. Lutheran worship books are organized so that page numbers for the liturgy are in the front part of the book, hymn numbers are in the second part. The liturgy and hymns are printed in your bulletin, but page numbers are provided for those wishing to follow along in the red Evangelical Lutheran Worship. Receiving Holy Communion We invite all baptized Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own churches to share with us the sacrament of the body and blood of Christ for the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. At the direction of the usher, come forward to the altar. Receive the bread in the palm of your hand. Take the silver chalice and drink from it or dip the bread in the ceramic chalice. Return to your place via the side aisles after you receive both elements. Those who need to receive communion sitting should sit on an aisle and notify the pastor or an usher before the Service if you have not previously received communion in the pew. Those who desire a blessing but not the sacrament are asked to fold their arms over their chests. Page | 2 INFORMATION ABOUT TODAY’S SERVICE In today's Second Reading from I John 5:1-6, the author is battling the false teachings of the time. The Gnostics believed that God would not come in human form. They were in love with love and talked about the philosophical ideas of love - not the expression in human forms of love. The writer of I John counters that argument by reminding the community that God's love for us is made flesh in Jesus and carried out in the flesh through the believers. Talking about love is one thing - doing love is quite the opposite! Service of the Word Gathering Pre-Service Music: Variations on: Concertos by Bach and Walther Stand. Thanksgiving for Baptism P In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all. We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. Page | 3 Gathering Hymn:Christ Is Alive! In your mercy enable us to share in his obedience to your will and in the glorious victory of his resurrection, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen Sit. Welcome to visitors and announcements Page | 6 First Lesson: Acts 10: 44-48 A A reading from the book of Acts 44 While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. 45The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, 46for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, 47Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? 48So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days. A The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Page | 7 Second Lesson: 1 John 5: 1-6 A A reading from the book of First John Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. 2By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, 4for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. 5Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. A The word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Stand. Gospel Acclamation Page | 8 Holy Gospel: John 15: 9 - 17 P The Holy Gospel according to Saint John, the fifteenth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord 9 As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. 12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures: he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. ELW page 108 Page | 13 Great Thanksgiving continues .......................................................................................................... ELW page 108 You are indeed holy, almighty and merciful God. You are most holy, and great is the majesty of your glory. You so loved the world that you gave your only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life. We give you thanks for his coming into the world to fulfill for us your holy will and to accomplish all things for our salvation. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. Remembering, therefore, his salutary command, his life-giving passion and death, his glorious resurrection and ascension, and the promise of his coming again, we give thanks to you, O Lord God Almighty, not as we ought but as we are able; we ask you mercifully to accept our praise and thanksgiving and with your Word and Holy Spirit to bless us, your servants, and these your own gifts of bread and wine, so that we and all who share in the body and blood of Christ may be filled with heavenly blessing and grace, and, receiving the forgiveness of sin, may be formed to live as your holy people and be given our inheritance with all your saints. Lord, we remember the mothers who have gone before us. For their love, sacrifice, struggle and joy, we thank you. Lord, we remember the mothers of Scripture who are a part of our story as we are a part of your story. For their courage, faith, love and fierceness, we thank you. Lord, we remember those who have not given birth to us, but are mothers to us. For their gift of themselves that they have given, we thank you. For the women who struggle with fertility, for those women whom society labels as less in their childlessness, for those women who have lost children. For their tears, for their strength, for their wisdom, for their lives, we thank you. In your name we pray. Amen. A Prayer by Claire Schoepp Page | 19
