† Our parking lot is located on the south side of the church off Sherman Avenue. Church members
may park in the lot at any time, whether for church events or for shopping or other errands in
downtown Evanston; see the church office to get a parking pass. For Sunday morning services,
additional parking is under the Best Western Hotel or in Lot 6 on Lake Street across from the
Police and Fire Headquarters.
† There are accessible rest rooms across from the kitchen and on the lower level next to the
elevator. There are two additional rest rooms on the lower level near the meeting of the two
hallways.
† Children are welcome in our worship services. We have an attended nursery and a changing room
downstairs for parents to use, if needed. Both rooms are on the lower level. An usher can direct
you.
† The parking lot entrance is an accessible entrance. An elevator is located inside the entrance.
† If you are a visitor, please introduce yourself to our pastor or assisting minister. Please sign our
guest book in the narthex or a visitor card from the pew rack, and we will send you a packet of
information about Immanuel.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT OUR WORSHIP
The Lutheran Service follows the historic liturgy that has evolved since the early centuries of
Christianity. We have a set form, but the content changes for each service. The content is governed
by the church year calendar and lectionary (a system of scripture readings). Sunday worship is
organized around the proclamation of the Word of God and the celebration of the Lord’s Supper.
Lutheran worship books are organized so that page numbers for the liturgy are in the front part of the
book, hymn numbers are in the second part. The liturgy and hymns are printed in your bulletin, but
page numbers are provided for those wishing to follow along in the red Evangelical Lutheran Worship.
Receiving Holy Communion
We invite all baptized Christians who receive Holy Communion in their own churches to share with us
the sacrament of the body and blood of Christ for the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. At the
direction of the usher, come forward to the altar. Receive the bread in the palm of your hand. Take
the silver chalice and drink from it or dip the bread in the ceramic chalice. Return to your place via
the side aisles after you receive both elements. Those who need to receive communion sitting should
sit on an aisle and notify the pastor or an usher before the Service if you have not previously received
communion in the pew. Those who desire a blessing but not the sacrament are asked to fold their
arms over their chests.

INFORMATION ABOUT TODAY’S SERVICE
The Feast of Weeks was the second of the great pilgrimage festivals. Originally a harvest festival, it
gained the Greek title Pentecost (meaning 50th day) because it came 50 days after Passover. In
Luke’s day, Pentecost was viewed as a celebration of giving the Law on Sinai.
Sometimes we Christians wind up a little too….sober! No, not concerning alcohol. We become too
sober—as in serious, routine, predictable, and logical—for the spontaneity, creativity, and flexibility
required for hearing, seeing, and understanding what God is doing in our midst!
Soberly, we want everything to make sense, in orderly and sequential way. Then comes the
windstorm; or a creation “groaning in labor pains.” Worse yet: hardships, beatings, riots, and
sleepless nights. Desiring a more linear chain of events, we find ourselves in the “right brain” land of
the seemingly irrational.
When the Holy Spirit blows like a wind into our lives and through our moment in history, things are not
left tidy and calm. In awe, we wonder where the wind “comes from and where it goes” (John 3:8).
Peculiar things await us on this biblical excursion. So pack some childlike trust, and get a little crazy.
This weekend we remember all those who have served in our country’s armed forces to preserve the
freedoms that have been granted us. We also remember the family members who have made great
sacrifices in order to make it possible for their service members to be on watch at home or around the
world or to go into harm’s way.

Prayers of Intercession and Thanksgiving for Volunteers
P. We are truly blessed by God and enriched in our fellowship by the many people of this congregation who
volunteer their time and their talent in small and large ways for the benefit of this church and for the
advancement of the gospel of Christ in this place. St. Paul tells us that there are varieties of gifts and varieties of
activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone as a manifestation of the Holy Spirit for
the common good. There is no insignificant work that is done among us. All efforts -- from maintaining our
property to cleaning the church to leadership to visiting the sick to praying for one another and for our ministryall are important efforts by which we are mutually blessed and by which our ministry prospers.
At the same time, St. Paul teaches us to give thanks always to God through Christ in whom he has given
us every blessing, including the blessing of one another. It is therefore appropriate on this day that we
should recognize the work that is done by so many faithful and dedicated people, giving thanks to one
another and to Almighty God for making the Spirit manifest among us in such a variety of ways.
A: Let us pray. Almighty God, you have called us into fellowship as the Church of Jesus Christ in this
place, and you have blessed us and enriched our lives through your Holy Word and Sacraments. You

COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK
John Calvin, renewer of the church, died 1564
Gifted both as a systematic theologian and as an interpreter of scriptures, Calvin embraced the
Reformation, and as a preacher in Geneva, Switzerland, brought a theocratic government to it. He is
regarded as the father of the Reformed churches.
Friday, May 29
Jiri Tranovský, hymnwriter, died 1637
Tranovský is considered to be the father of Slovak hymnody as well as an important reformer of the
Slavic church. He translated the Augsburg Confession (the basis of Lutheran teachings) and
published a collection of Slovak hymns.

Visit of Mary to Elizabeth
This festival marks the occasion when Mary, pregnant with Jesus, visited her cousin Elizabeth who
was herself pregnant with John. Elizabeth pronounced Mary "blessed among women," and Mary
responded with the song called the Magnificat.
