The Herbert S. Waxman Clinical Skills Center
The Herbert S. Waxman Clinical Skills Center is a collection of educational activities focused exclusively
on interactive, hands-on learning and self-study. Under the guidance of expert faculty, attendees can
update their physical examination skills and learn office and hospital-based procedures simulators and
standardized patients. Attendance at the Center regularly exceeds 3,000 during the three days of the
meeting. The Waxman Center offers opportunities for in-kind support as well. Donations or loans of
equipment and supplies are activity-specific and ACP can provide more information on the types of

These workshops are highly sought after educational
experiences. Attendees are dedicated, engaged
learners. Practical skills being demonstrated by faculty
and practiced by attendees with close observation
and feedback. Much different dynamic than a
standard didactic lecture session.
Advanced Airway Techniques:
Rescue and Alternatives
This workshop will focus on management of the patient
who requires airway support. Participants will learn
the advantages and disadvantages of rapid-sequence
intubation and rescue techniques in the event of a failed
intubation and will practice intubation on simulation
mannequins. The learner will gain an understanding of
techniques that will improve success and confidence in
managing his or her patient’s airway.

Ankle–Brachial Index by Doppler
This workshop will focus on the protocols and techniques for
performing the ankle–brachial index in the office setting. Participants will learn tips on wrapping cuffs, finding the arteries
with the Doppler probe, testing accuracy, and interpreting test
results. Faculty will also discuss how test results may impact
treatment options.

Arthrocentesis and Bursal Injections
Participants will learn the anatomical landmarks used to
identify injection sites as well as the steps for performing diagnostic arthrocentesis and therapeutic bursal and soft tissue
injections by using joint models for practice. Faculty will also
discuss indications, contraindications, therapeutic glucocorticoids, and procedural follow-up.
Cardiac Diagnosis with
the Harvey® Simulated Patient
Using repetitive practice with feedback, this workshop
will teach the most important bedside cardiac findings by
using “Harvey®,” the cardiopulmonary patient simulator.
Participants will be asked to identify which findings require
echocardiography and further evaluation and treatment

Chronic Leg Wound Management
Support Fee: $7,500
Participants will refine their knowledge of cardiac
auscultation by listening to heart sounds while viewing
corresponding phonocardiograms and clinical images in a
self-directed learning environment. Basic and advanced-level
heart sounds and visuals will be available.
Participants will learn to differentiate among major leg
wound categories and how to prepare wounds for
treatment and know which topical or systemic treatments
to use on chronic leg wounds. The workshop will focus
on when and how to use multilayer compression wraps
(Unna boot), the types of dressings appropriate for a
variety of leg wounds, and provide practical tips for the
management of venous leg ulcers.

Cardiac Auscultation Self-Guided Tour —
Basic and Advanced**
WIDE AUDIENCE. General Internists, subspecialists,
IM residents, hospitalists, and medical students are all
represented in the Center’s Audience each year.

entire scientific meeting.

Dermatology Self-Guided Tour**
This self-guided activity provides participants with a
chance to interpret various dermatologic images and quiz
themselves using corresponding multiple choice answer
options. The correct answer and a rationale for that answer
is provided.
Ophthalmoscopic Skills
Exposure to over 300 attendees over the course of three days
Learn proper technique of direct ophthalmoscopy and how
to examine the structures of the eye. Working with faculty
in small groups, participants will learn to recognize normal
anatomy and clinical findings of common eye pathologies.
Management of common eye disorders and when referral is
necessary will also be discussed.

Exposure to 132 attendees during 11 workshops over three days
Foot and Ankle Disorders
Become familiar with common complaints involving the foot
and ankle. Participants will learn the appropriate use of foot
and ankle orthotics and recognize indications for imaging
studies and subspecialty referral.

Incision and Drainage of Abscesses
Using simulation models, participants will learn how to
incise, drain, irrigate, and pack abscesses under the supervision of expert faculty. Management, including antibiotic
stewardship, and follow-up will also be discussed.

Lumbar Puncture
Participants will watch a demonstration of lumbar puncture
technique and then practice the procedure on simulation
models. Expert faculty will provide feedback and discuss
pre- and postprocedure protocol, as well as sterile
technique and ultrasound guidance.

at 104%, the second year in a row that attendance

Under the guidance of professional patient-instructors,
participants will perform examinations, receive feedback, and
learn new techniques in the following areas:

PICC Line Placement
This workshop will reintroduce peripherally inserted central
catheter (PICC) line training to physicians and allow them
the opportunity to practice placement of PICC lines in a
simulated setting. Faculty will teach the indications, technical
skills, and practice implications regarding placement of
PICC lines and provide hands-on training by using portable
ultrasonography.
Exposure to 120 attendees during 5 workshops over three days

Suturing Skills
Learn several different suturing techniques such as the
simple interrupted, continuous, and mattress suture, by
practicing on pigs’ feet. Expert faculty will facilitate and
provide direct observation and feedback. Participants will
learn at least two techniques.

Toenail Removal
Learn the indications for toenail removal. Using a realistic model and surgical instruments, practice a digital block, wedge
resection, removal of an ingrown toenail, and wound care. The
workshop will also cover follow-up care and treatment.
Exposure to 84 attendees during 6 workshops over three days

Ultrasound-Guided Central Line Placement
Using ultrasonography equipment, standardized patients,
two types of training models, and central line kits,
participants will learn how to find vessels and practice line
placement technique.
Exposure to 100 attendees during 27 workshops over three days
Support Fee: $2,500
Skin Biopsy and Cryosurgery
Learn how to perform a variety of skin biopsy and
cryosurgery techniques. Expert faculty will provide instruction
and feedback as you practice these techniques on pigs’ feet.
Procedural follow-up, interpreting pathology reports, and the
need for referral will also be discussed.
Exposure to 216 attendees during 18 workshops over three days

LONG-TERM SUCCESS. Since 1999, the Waxman
Center has filled over 40,000 seats in these unique
hand-on workshops.
Ultrasound-Guided Paracentesis
Using ultrasonography equipment, training models,
and paracentesis kits, participants will learn how to find
landmarks and practice paracentesis technique. They
will also review the indications, contraindications, and
complications of the procedure.
