Recently we ran across an old cassette tape with a message
James W. Gilley
from Danny Shelton to a growing list of supporters 3ABN had
3ABN President
built in those early days of ministry. The year was 1986, barely
more than a year after he had been impressed by the Lord to “build a television station that
would reach the world with the undiluted three angels’ messages” in November of 1984.
Danny and his daughter Melody had been traveling to churches all around the country
telling the story and casting the vision of what he was convinced God wanted him to do,
with divine help, to proclaim God’s last-day truth to the world. However, he couldn’t
go everywhere, so a friend convinced him to tell the story and outline his goals on a
cassette tape that could be shared by people everywhere. He did, and that tape went all
over the world—duplicated thousands of times, and reduplicated by those who were
thrilled at the prospects of the three angels’ messages of Revelation 14 being aired 24/7
to a world of people who had never heard them.
When we found this tape, we wondered how many of those projections, plans, and
dreams eventually became reality; and as we listened, we realized that God has brought
an amazing number of these into existence. But more importantly, we discovered that
3ABN is still on track with the mission of spreading the undiluted three angels’ messages
that counteract the counterfeit.
That plan has expanded with 3ABN Latino, 3ABN Proclaim!, 3ABN Dare to Dream,
3ABN Kids Network—along with 3ABN Radio, 3ABN Russia, and 3ABN Français—but
it is still the same Bible message.
We are offering you a copy of that tape, which we’ve placed on a CD, nearly two hours
long! Just call our office at (618) 627-4651, Monday through Thursday, and we’ll send
one your way. When God’s Vision becomes our vision it always comes true!

her to tell us how God has
blessed this ministry in the
past year. Her observations
were both exciting and enlightening.

3ABN World: Dr. Lewis, what are
some of the developments of the past
year at 3ABN Dare to Dream?
Dr. Yvonne Lewis: Well, this past
year, Dare to Dream added several new
employees—my son Jason Bradley; a new
director/editor, Ryan St. Hillaire; and our
newest addition, Brian
Heath, who is an editor trainee. While
we’ve been assisted by some employees
from our parent network, we needed
some dedicated Dare to Dream employees, since no network can operate at
maximum efficiency without staff.
Several years ago, Jason was my office
manager in Dallas when I practiced alternative medicine. I knew his work ethic
and people skills, but the Lord led him
here to be my assistant. He wears several
hats at the network, and has been such
a blessing at Dare to Dream by interfacing with callers, working as my liaison
with various pastors, and co-producing
programming. He’s also very involved
in marketing Dare to Dream to prisons.
Ryan St. Hillaire has also made major
contributions to our network! He is the
co-director for Unscene Media Group,
and has been a director/editor for their

where 3ABN has experienced
tremendous growth is with
the prison population. How is
Dare to Dream doing with this
new audience?
Dr. Lewis: I’m super excited
about our collaboration with
our 3ABN Marketing Department in getting us into the
prison system! We are currently exploring opportunities
to get 3ABN Dare to Dream
into 160 facilities nationwide,
and we ask for your prayers,
since we have some hurdles to
overcome. I believe the Lord is
eager for us to reach this huge
audience of people who have
reached bottom and are desperate for a
new way of life. We want to bring them
our wide range of programs that address
their spiritual needs, as well as their needs
when it comes to parenting, finances,
and even reintegration into society once
they’re released.
World: I understand you’re using
social media rather extensively to get the
word out about Dare to Dream.
Dr. Lewis: That’s right, our social
media efforts are paying off! We are on
Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram now. We’re also investigating ways
of building a contact list for notifying
our viewers of upcoming programs.

by Jim Gilley
’m often reminded of the mentors
I’ve encountered along this journey
the Lord has taken me on. They’ve
inspired me, and have been used to direct
my path, usually along a road I hadn’t
planned to take.
One of them was Pastor Henry Barron.
Just before my fourteenth birthday, my
folks moved to Dallas from the beautiful
east Texas town of Tyler, and against my
wishes, my mother enrolled me in Dallas
Junior Academy—a school run by the
Dallas First Church (the only Adventist
church in town at that time).
Pastor Barron was the assistant pastor
and also led the youth activities. He had a
beautiful tenor voice, and I loved to hear
him sing. His voice teacher
had recommended him

to a metropolitan opera group, but he
declined, because he’d dedicated his
talents to the Lord. He took a special
interest in me, and soon I was leading
song service for young people’s meetings
on Friday evenings.
How Dare You?
I was too young to drive, so I caught a
ride to church with anyone I could find.
One Friday night, the driver I rode with
was smoking. I hated the smell of smoke,
but it was much too far and too cold to
walk, so I put up with it.
He dropped me off at the church, and
I rushed in. But I hardly got a few feet
inside the door when the head deacon
confronted me.
“How dare you come into this church?
You’ve been smoking!” he growled.
“I have not!” I replied hotly. To be
falsely accused infuriated me then—and
truthfully, I don’t handle it much better
today.
“Don’t lie to me. I can smell it all over
you!” he retorted.

I Want the Job
Pastor Barron gave me a lot of council,
especially after I committed to becoming
a minister of the gospel. However, his
greatest impact on my life came during
his last five years of ministry. Although I
was a businessman, I was also the pastor
of the Arlington Seventh-day Adventist
Church in Texas (drawing a $1/year
salary). The Conference had just agreed
to hire an associate pastor to help me,
and I’d stopped by a phone to call the
Conference president to discuss potential
names. But while I was talking with him,

Good and Faithful Servant
On Sunday, January 4, 2015, I received
a call from his faithful son, David Barron,
who informed me that my friend and
mentor had passed away peaceably just
a few minutes before, while taking a nap
after lunch.
I often thanked Henry for the encouragement and support he’d given me, both
as a person, and as a worker for God. The
lives he touched can literally be multiplied by thousands, and one day, when
Christ returns, he will come forth in resurrection and hear the words, “Well done,
my good and faithful servant Henry.
Enter now into the joy of the Lord.”

But one day, as he was driving, he noticed

So he prayed, Lord, if You want me to give

The light changed, and all the traffic

Donna’s father James Parmele had

and sit on the bench near the Food Lion

and give them a Steps To Christ. Later,
his grandson Ryan and wife Rebecca
began giving Bible studies. The time had
come to rent a church, and since their

Donna asked them about renting their

M

to Guatemala last January to
host a four-day Bible prophecy seminar with Pastor Stephen Bohr.
Although the event was organized
and sponsored by the Metropolitan
Conference of Seventh-day Adventists
and the Vista Hermosa (Beautiful View)
Seventh-day Adventist Church, they
asked for permission to use 3ABN Latino’s name on banners and invitations,
since we’re carried by over 80 percent
of the country’s cable companies. Each
meeting was packed or nearly packed to
capacity, and during some of the meetings they had to put out more chairs to
accommodate everyone. Attendance at
some meetings reached around 2,000
people, including 30 pastors from other
denominations—and two mayors!
As I looked around, I saw people
with their Bibles or tablets following
along attentively as Pastor Bohr read the
texts. Both young and old were eagerly
taking notes as he presented the biblical
messages.
These seminars were not expected
to bring baptismal decisions, but under
the impression of the Holy Spirit, Pastor Bohr made an appeal anyway, and
an impressive number of people made
commitments to be baptized. Praise
the Lord!
The Influence of the Holy Spirit
Idalia and I were impressed by the
amount of those who told us they were
blessed by 3ABN Latino’s programming.
In fact, many told us they joined the
Seventh-day Adventist Church as a
direct result of watching our network.
One lady told Idalia, “It’s your fault that
I am a Seventh-day Adventist!” Then
she smiled and shared how God
used our programming to lead
her to Christ.
Another lady named Ana

effort to calm them down,

found 3ABN Latino, our children’s musical program was on the air. She said that
as they watched, she was amazed how
calm they became! From that moment on
she made a point to look for 3ABN Latino
to see what else we had to offer. “So you
see, today I’m a Seventh-day Adventist
because of a children’s program!” she
exclaimed.
Right Away
Aydee Moran told us that a friend from
an evangelical church encouraged her to
watch 3ABN Latino so she could learn
more about the Bible. Aydee tuned in just
as we were broadcasting an evangelistic
campaign live from Colombia, and by
the end of the week she was convinced
that this was the truth she was looking
for. So she found the closest Seventh-day
Adventist church and began attending
their services.
After that visit, a church member
named Myrtle Newbold began studying
with her, and a few weeks later, Aydee
began attending an evangelistic series at
the church. By the middle of the week she
had decided that her time had come to be
baptized, so she came forward.
“Are you sure you don’t want to wait
until Saturday?” Myrtle asked her. “You
didn’t come prepared to be baptized
today.”
“No,” Aydee replied. “The things of the
Lord have to be done right away. I want to
be baptized tonight,” and she was! After
sharing her testimony
with us, Aydee said,

uring our 3ABN Homecoming
last fall, a friend introduced me
to a young man named Brian
Heath, adding that I’d probably want to
interview him. I’m always looking for
substantive, life-changing interviews for
Urban Report, so I talked to Brian, and
he did indeed have a powerful testimony!
Brian and his brother grew up on the
South Side of Chicago, and were raised
by a single mom. He says that his mother
always felt she couldn’t survive without a
man, but when she got involved with the
one who became his stepfather, everything went awry.
Suffering
His parents began depriving their kids
of food, feeding them ramen noodles
and Kaboom breakfast
cereal while they ate
decent meals, themselves. Brian also began
enduring beatings from
his stepfather for the
smallest infractions—

to fight for survival as he walked to
school, and when he was suspended
for fighting, he knew he had another
beating coming. He ran away from home
frequently, sleeping in abandoned cars
and in the L subway cars.
Abuse
Since his stepfather was a gang member, Brian was raised to be one, too.
Later, as a major gang war raged, he ran
away from a group home and moved in
with a man who was friends with one
of the staff members. But his trust was
misplaced, and sadly, that man drugged
and molested him, so he ran away, again.
By this time, his parents had adopted
a baby girl, whom Brian loved dearly. He
cared for her as often as he could, and
one day, while his parents were away, he
came to see her.
Suddenly, a car drove up, and the man
who had molested him asked where his
friends were. He believed they had stolen
some items from him, and pointing his
gun at Brian’s baby sister, he said, “If you
don’t tell me where your friends are, I’ll
do worse to her than I did to you!”
That night, feeling he must stop him
from molesting his sister, Brian went to
the man’s house—and killed him!
years of his sentence he was released with
only $13 in his pocket, but his spiritual
family took him into their homes and
showed him the love of Jesus.
Due to his criminal record, Brian had
a hard time finding a job. Finally, after
about 100 applications, a farmer hired
him, and while he appreciated the chance,
Brian wanted to do more with his life.
When he came for the Urban Report interview, I felt impressed to hire him, and our
Administrative Committee agreed that he
should work for Dare to Dream. What a
blessing it’s been for Brian—and for us!
He’s been working at 3ABN for a few
months now, and is doing excellent work.
When you look into Brian’s face you
see no traces of rage or anger. You only
see the peace that Jesus brings.
Prison
Brian was arrested for the crime, but
never told the judge why he’d killed the
man, feeling that if he divulged that
information, things would be worse for
him in prison. And because he said nothing, he was portrayed as a monster and
sentenced to 38 years in prison. While he
was there, Brian earned three associates
degrees and ten certificates. But most

entecost. What a day it must
have been. A day without
equal in the short history
of the young church. The faithful had
gathered themselves together. They had
prayed and fasted before the Lord. They
had united their hearts and minds. There
was perfect unity and accord. Each one
was waiting for and expecting the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in
answer to their heartfelt petitions.
And then it happened—an unprecedented event in earth’s history. The Holy
Spirit came into the world and over
the assembly as never before. God was
equipping the church for a mighty work,
and to face the persecution that was sure
to come. A rushing mighty wind blew,
and cloven (divided) tongues of fire sat
on the speakers. The gift of tongues was
manifested, and the evangelists began
to preach to the diaspora Jews who had
assembled from across the then known
world. Miraculously, each person heard
the gospel preached in his or her native
language. When Peter stood to exhort
the congregation and lift up the name of
Jesus, the Bible indicates that there were
3,000 who gladly heard the Word, were
baptized, and were added to the church
that day!
Some years ago I heard of a baptism
held in southern Mexico that exceeded
3,000, and here and there, we hear reports
of large baptisms. However, the church
is still looking for and expecting this to
be repeated over and over again in the
coming years as we approach the time of
the Second Coming of the Lord.

as a network—and for that matter, each

because of the Holy Spirit power contained in the Word.
The Bible, speaking about itself and
its writers, says “Holy men of God

the Holy Spirit.” 2 Peter 1:21. The Spirit
of God was present at the writing of
the Scripture, and it is there to fill the
mind and heart of everyone who prayerfully reads it.

began to pray earnestly for someone to take charge of this huge project.
Having no success, I called my mom,

to help for a couple of weeks until I
found someone. That was over 13 years

the lessons, too!

kids ask Bible questions and I can give
them answers from Scripture. I hope I

ave you ever taken a walk through the woods and
wondered what was living in all those holes in the
ground? Or maybe you’ve walked past a dark cave
and imagined what kind of animal made its home there?
Our world is full of mysteries—creatures beyond our
imagination and places that we’ve never been before.
One of the most mysterious places is beneath the
ocean’s surface. There are countless interesting sea
creatures that make the ocean waters their home, including
the fascinating jellyfish.
The name jellyfish perfectly describes what they look
like. They are gelatinous and transparent, meaning that
you can see right through them. They may look harmless,
but they are much more dangerous than a bowl of Jell-o!
Jellyfish have several tentacles that hang down from their
jelly top. God gave each of these tentacles tiny stinging
cells that can paralyze just about anything that touches
them.
Because the jellyfish is equipped to protect itself, it
doesn’t have many predators. Only animals that aren’t hurt
by its sting can actually eat them; all the other sea creatures
avoid contact. Even humans know that it’s important to be
very careful around them!
Like the jellyfish, we also live in a dangerous world. The
devil is doing everything he can to keep us out of Heaven.
We must protect ourselves against him. God knew we
would need His help, so He gave us His Word. The Bible is
our best protection against the attacks of the enemy. Don’t
forget to spend time with Jesus each day, reading His Word
and listening to His voice. He will help you win the battle
against Satan!

“Happy IS THE MAN WHO FINDS wisdom,
AND THE MAN WHO gains understanding. PROVERBS 3:13

Testimony
by Bobby Davis
E
ric Durant grew up in Queens,
New York, where his father
worked as a systems engineer
with IBM and his mother worked as a
secretary in the JFK Airport post office.
“I can’t say their marriage was a very
happy one,” he says, “and we didn’t see
much of my dad, even when he wasn’t
working. So until his passing, my father
figure was my paternal grandfather,
22 3ABN World | April 2015
who was a very good man,
full of love, and generosity.”
But however much love he
received from his mother
and grandfather, Eric still
faced the reality of growing
up on the streets of New
York City. “I guess violence
just seemed normal to me,”
he says. “On my way to
school I was on my own.
Predatory mobs, guns, robberies, yellow tape, and crime
scenes—I was exposed to all
these, and a lot more I wish I
could forget. So I joined a gang to
survive, but unlike many of the boys,
I wouldn’t carry a weapon. I was small,
fast, and unusually strong, so my gang
members nicknamed me Taz—short for
theTasmanian devil cartoon character.
The brutality of the streets nurtured an
almost unquenchable anger; an anger
that just grew worse with each confrontation. Fenced in by wolves, weakness and
fear was not something you showed, so I
hid it well and deep, and there it stayed.
“For 18 years I rarely wandered
beyond the stony borders of the city, but
I remember the first time I saw the stars.
It was on a Boy Scout trip toVirginia,
and I was in awe! When I’m old enough
I’ll leave the city, aim for the stars, and
never look back, I thought.”
Godly Influence
Although his parents were both
raised Catholics, Eric’s mother raised
her children as Baptists. “She read the
Bible and prayed for us all the time,”
he says. “She taught us about God, and
gave each of us a Bible. But while I
enjoyed church, it just didn’t make sense
to me. Why were we going to church
on one day, while the Jews in the Bible
worshipped on Saturday? And why did
some people say you go to Heaven when
you die, while others say you’re asleep
in the ground? I believed in God, but
I was never sure which denomination
to follow.”
Despite his mom’s best efforts, Eric
was in his teens before he read his first
book—a biography of Robert L. Scott,
Jr., America’s famous fighter ace from
WWII. “As I read God Is My Co-Pilot, I
thought, He’s like me, a fighter trapped in
a war zone! Suddenly, I could escape my
hostile world through books and explore
science, the adventures of heroes, and the
dreams of theologians.
My relationship with my gang quickly
faded, and my love of books led me
to the Bible. The words it contained
sealed my path forever! My Bible would
eventually travel with me around the
globe—through danger zones and pastures, right up to my baptism. Someone
else other than my mom cared for me
and He lived in our hearts and dwelt
among the stars.
“Later in life my mom told me she
prayed for my safety every day. She knew
more than I thought. I wasn’t hiding anything she didn’t already suspect. It is miraculous how God protected me through
those years, completely unscathed. ”
Eric moved to Florida and worked for
the U.S. Postal Service. Then one day,
a very tall man approached him in the
parking lot and handed him a pamphlet,
saying, “You need this.”
“It was a pamphlet about the Sabbath,
the Antichrist, and the three angels’
messages of Revelation 14,” Eric recalls,
“but I didn’t think much of it, so I threw
it in a junk drawer, where it sat for two
years. About the third time I almost
threw it out, I thought, I should read this
first—and my world changed forever!
This was the truth I’d been searching for.
It answered key questions, but created
many more, so I dug deeper into my
Bible until it became real. Gone was the
hip-hop music and the parties. I was on
a mission to find more answers, and as
I searched, my anger began to subside.”
Miraculous Landing
Returning to New York, Eric worked
at his mother’s post office, but a few
years later he was restless. “I felt I needed
something more challenging,” he says, “so
my father agreed to give me money for
college. However, I had other ideas, so I
moved to the West Coast and used the
money to enroll in flight school, instead!”
One experience in flight school stands
out in Eric’s mind. Halfway through a
long solo flight from California to Arizona and back, he realized he had been
blown 30–40 miles off course by strong
winds over the Mojave Desert. Correcting his course, he noticed he was running
dangerously low on fuel. Then suddenly,

he saw a huge anvil cloud hanging over
the airport. It had been a beautiful day
when he’d left California, so he hadn’t
checked the weather before flying back.
Now his fuel gauge was on the red line.
The tower reported moderate to severe
wind sheer and light rain, and passenger
jets were aborting their landings. But Eric
had no choice. Tightening his seat belt,
he began his approach and suddenly he
hit turbulence! “Only my seatbelt kept me
from being thrown into the back seat of
my small Cessna as the wind tried to flip
my little airplane on its back,” he recalls.
“Desperately, I cried to God for help—
and a mere second later the air was dead
calm! I touched down without a burble
between my prayer and the runway!
“My whole flight class came out to
watch me land, and my instructor walked
out and scolded me after I turned off
the engine. ‘You should have diverted
to another airport!’ he barked. ‘Why did
you fly in from the east instead of north?
Were you lost?’
“I never told him who really landed my
airplane, but I knew! I was convicted yet
again that God was with me. He’d heard
my prayer.”
After flying commercially for four
years, Eric took a job in testing and development for the military at Vandenberg

AFB, in California. Later, he joined
a flight test group onboard a B-52H
bomber at Barksdale AFB in Louisiana.
“We developed and tested all manner
of flight systems and flew sorties around
the globe,” he says, “but while I enjoyed
the sciences and engineering, my growing faith prompted my heart in another
direction.
“I still hadn’t found a Sabbath-keeping
church,” he recalls, “but one day, as I
searched through the channels, I found
a fuzzy 3ABN station out of Shreveport. I
couldn’t make out a picture, but the audio
came through loud and clear. They were
talking about the Sabbath!”
For the next two years, Eric listened night after night. “I heard
truth flooding from my static-filled
TV, and it all resonated with me,”
he says. “I was captured by the message—the same message I’d read on
that pamphlet ten years earlier. No one
spoke like this! These speakers had the
answers I’d been seeking.
“Finally, one day I heard ‘Seventh-day
Adventists,’ and I knew this was the
church I must attend. It had the biblical
truth I needed. It answered the questions
I’d had all my life.”
New Purpose
Smoke was pouring out of a neighbor’s apartment one day as Eric came
home. Shouting after the landlord, they
ran upstairs and kicked in the door. The
man was passed out on the couch, so Eric
crouched under the smoke and dragged
him to safety while his landlord put out
the kitchen fire with an extinguisher.
“The military wanted to give me an
award, but I turned them down,” Eric says.
“I just did what anyone would do, but I felt
wonderful. Later, I thought, We’re placed
in this world to help one another. And what
better way is there to help, than to lead them
to Jesus? It was time to go to church, and
there was only one choice!
“The Philadelphia Seventh-day Adventist Church welcomed me with open
arms and southern hospitality. For the
first time in my life the message and the
gospel seemed right, but despite all this, a
great war began raging inside me. Strange
nightmares frightened me so much I’d
climb out of bed and onto my knees to
pray. The devil doesn’t want me to get
baptized! I realized. I need to do it now!”
Approaching his pastor, Eric shared about
his struggle, and his need to be baptized. “It
was just after the 9/11 attack, America was
at war, and I might be deployed overseas
any day,” he explains. “So I was baptized the
following Sabbath, and my heart was sealed
forever! Gone was the military warrior,
the combat airman, the weapons systems
developer. The remaining anger, the cursing,
and the drinking quickly faded away, never
to return.”
Love &Ambition
Eric was honorably discharged
from the military two months later
and moved to Colorado to take a
position as a spacecraft systems engineer.
“That’s where I met and married my
best friend Marilyn,” he says, “but soon
both of us were under attack. First we
were robbed of everything of value,
except each other; a week later, a truck
ran into us at a stop light. Marilyn lost
her job, and the puppy I bought her was
run over by a car in a freak accident; but
our faith held strong.
“On our honeymoon cruise I couldn’t
shake my concerns about my career path,
and I well remember praying on our
ship’s balcony. God, I asked, is my career
becoming a diversion? Is this right for me?
I need a sign, Lord!
“I have no doubt that the Lord sent that
pale-colored dove that flew in from the
deep blue sky moments later. It lingered
just a few feet from where I’d knelt, and
then vanished into the distance. I can’t
tell you how special that moment was. It
wasn’t what I’d expected, but was certainly
what I’d needed. God was still there!”
Several years later Eric was transferred to Washington State, and his wife
Marilyn was baptized there after a Lyle
Albrecht series. It was a happy day for
the couple. They were now united in
their faith, as well.
Continued on page 48
Continued from page 25
Not long afterward, Eric had a dream
that puzzled them both. “In my dream, the
dove from my honeymoon cruise flew in
from the sun and landed on a rock that
looked like a round loaf of bread,” he
remembers. “But it just sat there, looking
at me and waiting.
“Marilyn and I couldn’t make sense of
it then, but looking back, I realize that
the Holy Spirit was waiting for me to do
something. I hadn’t engaged with God’s
plan for my life yet.”
Their next move was to Washington,
D.C., where Eric says corporate success
became an alluring distraction. But
something kept nagging at him.
“I began missing what I’d had back in
Louisiana. My religious zeal was gone.
The joys of witnessing, Bible studies, and
fellowship with Christians were lost in
the turmoil of long hours, government
service, and corporate and personal gain.
I was living in a dog-eat-dog environment
where everyone advertised their advanced
degrees and impeccable credentials, but no
one said anything about faith, the gospel,
or the Lord. It reminded me of my life on
the streets of New York, except we received
six-figure salaries and stock options.
“Finally, I realized that rising up the
ladder without a consistent relationship
with the Lord is not success, but genuine failure. My spiritual interest was
heightened, and my self-serving ambition
started to bleed away. I could no longer
remain where predatory ambition was
rewarded and politicking reigned. I was a
Christian, and it just wasn’t compatible.”
Under pressure for his beliefs and
Sabbath keeping, Eric turned to his Bible
48 3ABN World | April 2015
one day as he prayed for help. “The pages
parted to Psalm 124,” he says, “and the
words touched me deeply. Then, just a
few days later I received a job offer and a
promotion, while my persecutors fell victim to leadership reductions and demotions. The Psalms seemed prophetic, and
the Lord was still there!”
Lowest Hour &
Greatest Victory
Returning to the West Coast, Eric and
Marilyn sought a closer relationship with
the Lord. “The corporate hustle was gone,
and career ambitions paled in comparison to my faith as we settled in,” he says.
“I continued to do well for the next few
years, and, by the grace God, I was being
mentored for further advancement. But
a phone call started a ride to the lowest
points imaginable.
“First, we discovered that Marilyn’s
mom had died unexpectedly in her sleep
in her small home in Pueblo, Colorado.
Then, two months later, I took the next
flight out to be with my mom after hearing
she wasn’t fully awakening from surgery.
Minutes after I held her hand, her heart
stopped beating, and just over a week later,
my dad died from cancer.
“It was almost more than we could
bear, but we clung to the Lord. Job’s trials
resonated with us, and his great test of
faith drew us closer to our Savior.”
The trials continued. Windows mysteriously shattered, relatives suffered car
accidents, Eric’s sister suffered complications during surgery, and her children
began seeing their deceased grandmother
appearing in their rooms.
“To this day we pray that God will pro- faced as a young adult served as training

DIRECTIONS
I may be a bachelor, but I know
my way around the kitchen. I
love good food, so I learned how
to make my favorite dishes—
and this is one of them. It’s not
difficult, and it tastes absolutely
delicious. The aroma is amazing,
and it’s a hit with guests every
time.
I recommend you serve this
wonderful dish over jasmine
rice. If you wish, you may garnish it with parsley. I encourage
you to make this dish for your
friends and family, and watch the
smiles on their faces after their
first bite.
3 Remove bay leaf, and stir in lemon and cayenne
pepper. Simmer 5 more minutes.
4 Serve over Jasmine rice. Enjoy!
• ½ lemon, juiced
• ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
Curry
Most curry powder and curry pastes
include ground coriander, turmeric, cumin,
fenugreek, and chilli peppers.
However, some varieties may include curry
leaves, ginger, garlic, fennel seed, caraway,
cardamom and other spices.

Prescription for Health
It is estimated that one in six of us suffer
from anxiety, and having love in our life
is part of the treatment. Love decreases
adrenaline, cortisol, and inflammation. It
also increases our ability to reason and is
a healing belief.
Love Is a Treatment
I
am writing this on a beautiful April
Sunday. The sky is a perfect blue and
the sunlight is giving energy and
warmth to the world. However, my
thoughts are focused on the healing
power of love. The love that emanates
from God. We may learn about this by
having a relationship with the Creator.
This is in our original design, and I
believe that when we do not have this
connection, the brain and body are
under stress and the subsequent adverse
chemistry.
Our world is too often focused on what
we can do when it comes to healing,
and not on what God can do.
Distracted From the Truth?
Our world is too often focused on
what we can do when it comes to healing, and not on what God can do. Consider all the money being spent on
new medications and genetic research.
Are we getting better? Or are we being
distracted from real truth? Someone
came into my office with a bag full of
supplements, many of which were unfamiliar to me. I explained that anything
we ingest has some effect on our body,
whether it is food, medicine, supplements, herbs, or even what we see and
think about. We might not understand
the physiology, but there are changes!
God’s Recommendations
Modern medicine focuses on reductionism—on individual chemical pathways. But I want you to think about
the complexity of the body and how
everything interacts in ways we might
not understand. In my experience, even
though I don’t understand all the physiology, God’s original recommendations
have merit, and love is one of them.

As I observe the sun, I see it allows the
leaves to undergo photosynthesis that
gives us oxygen to breathe, and energy
for the plant to form sugars. Then I realize that God is always taking care of me.
As a Treatment
Is love a treatment for this
world? Absolutely! Love is
more than feelings, hugs, kisses, or a
rose. It involves serving, being with each
other, listening, caring, putting the needs
of others ahead of our own, and seeking
a relationship with our Creator. God is
love, and to know God is to love Him.
Love is definitely involved in healing.
I remember hearing the story of a
child being in the middle of a street as a
car approached. The child was full of fear
and stress, but a nearby onlooker had no
fear and jumped into the street to remove
the child from danger.
Love casts out fear. Fear, phobias of all
sorts, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, all
of these produce damaging chemicals.
As many Christians focus on the resurrection of Jesus Christ, our desire is to
have love in our life and learn how to have
a healing relationship with our Creator,
and each other. The most important
healing event the world has ever known
will be celebrated this month, and it is
this ultimate act of love that gives us the
healing prescription.
I see many who focus on modern
medicine, and this is needed at times.
Many point out the importance of a
whole food plant-based diet, and this is
important, as well. Others help out with
improving mental health and eliminating
stress and fear, and I believe that this is
just as important as
the food we eat. However, we must start
with our relationship
with our Lord, which
will lead us in understanding love a little
bit more each day. J a m e s L . M a r c u m

Person
Elisha asked three questions of the
woman as she approached, and God
asks those same relevant questions as
we approach His throne of grace in our
time of need.
How are you, as a person? He asks.
Did you let the sun go down on your
wrath last night, or were you angry, yet
without sin? Did you wake up this morning and say, “Good morning Lord,” or,
“Good Lord, it’s morning”? Were you a
courteous and thoughtful driver on your
way to work? Did you give your coworker
a piece of your heart, or a piece of your
mind? Maybe you woke up 30 minutes
late this morning, or ran out of hair
spray. Maybe you had to press your dress
clothes before work, or couldn’t find the
right necktie. If people don’t understand
your bad attitude, are you going to let
them know why?
Partner
Next, He asks, How are you, as a partner?
You both work the same amount of
hours, why can’t he pick up the kids? You
come home from work hungry and she
stopped off at CVS to buy some make-up.
Why isn’t dinner on the table? You promise yourself this is the last time you’ll pick
up his dirty clothes off the floor.
Then you get the test results and the
doctors sit down with you to share what
they’ve found. Your heart sinks. You
could have done better, and been better,
but you didn’t. As you get closer to the
Father in prayer, you hear Him say, Is it
well with your partner?
Parent
Finally, He wants to know, How are you,
as a parent?
You thought your child was just ignoring you—until you discovered he had a
hearing problem. You were really upset

and then you discovered she was dyslexic.
The reports showed autism, and your
heart broke for the poor baby. But then
you fell into the “poor pitiful me’s,” and
your negative tongue took over.
What will you say when the Lord asks,
Is it well with you? Tragedy strikes, accidents happen, sicknesses are discovered,
and you need to go to your heavenly
Father for help and comfort. When He
asks if all is well, will
you scream, “No! All
is not well with me!”
Or can you say, “This
is the day the Lord has
made; I will rejoice

The
T
ed is an inmate with a powerful story
of how God transforms lives that
have been engulfed in the sins of
this world that Satan makes so attractive.
After writing for his permission
to share his testimony with you, he
answered, “Feel free to use anything you
wish of mine to help others see the truth,
the love, and the power of our Father. I
have not grown weary of searching the
Bible for the epignosis (Greek for ‘precise and correct knowledge’) contained
within! Quite the contrary! After reading God’s Word, I indeed feel as if I am
mounted up with wings as eagles (Isaiah
40:31), so filled with the Spirit that sleep
evades me as I lie awake, meditating with
God during prayer, on the wondrous
things He has revealed to me.”
Here’s Ted’s testimony, which reveals
how the Holy Spirit works diligently in
our lives.
The Old Trash Can
“My heart used to be an old rusted and
dented trash can that sat on any corner
of any ghetto or slum in the world. At
night, the ungodly would come by and
fill it with trash: splintered wood, empty
cans of beer, filthy rags, and refuse of
any kind—and I would join in. Then we
would set the garbage on fire and stand
around it drinking liquor, smoking cigarettes, using drugs, using foul language,
and planning evil in the morning.
“When the fire had burned itself out
the ungodly would be gone and that old
rusted and dented trash can would be left
behind—abandoned, cold, and empty.
“This was my heart. This is what I
would have to present to a Holy God. I
was going to have to place it at the foot of
His throne on Judgment Day: the fruit of
my life, a heart afire, burning with anger,
burning with hate, and full of garbage.”
A Meadow
“Jesus found me sitting on the corners
of the ghettos and slums of the world. He
removed that garbage can heart. Where
He put it, I do not know, but He replaced
it with a meadow.
“It wasn’t much of a meadow, but He
saw its potential for growth and appointed
me steward over it. He gave me some tools:
a shovel, a rake, fertile soil, and seeds. But
most importantly, He gave me the light
that makes His meadow grow.
“In time, with my diligence and His
regenerating light, His meadow prospered and became a beautiful blessing
for those around it. Wildlife of various
kinds now dwell in His meadow, living
together in peace, joy, and love. I also
live in His meadow, which is my heart,
and together we keep the ungodly away.
Jesus and me . . . together.”
My Question
“One day, when I’m in Heaven, I’ll ask
Jesus, ‘Just what became of that garbage
can that burned with anger and hate?’
“And although I suspect I already know
His reply, He will tell me He knows not
of what I am speaking,

for seven days.
There are two meanings to the unleavened bread. First, it commemorates their
hasty exodus from Egypt, and second,
the leaven must not be used in the bread
because it is also a symbol of sin.
Barley is the earliest grain to ripen, and
since this is the time to harvest it, a sheaf
of barley is to be waved before the Lord
in thankfulness for the harvest.

Feast of Harvest
The first is the Feast of Unleavened
Bread. It begins with the celebration of
Passover, commemorating the salvation of

The second festival is the Feast of
Harvest, also called the Feast of Weeks.
It occurs seven weeks after the Passover
(in our May or June), at the time of the
wheat and spelt grain harvests.
This feast only lasts one day, and in
gratitude to God for the harvest, two barley loaves are to be baked with leaven and
presented before Him (Leviticus 23:17).
Feast of Ingathering
The third festival is the Feast of
Ingathering, also called the Feast of
Tabernacles or the Feast of Booths.
This is an eight-day festival that comes
in our October or November,
after the fall harvest of olives
and grapes. The people are to
make booths of tree branches
and live in them during the
festival, commemorating the
time of dwelling in tents during
the wilderness sojourn.
A holy convocation occurs
at the beginning and end of
the festival. The great day of
judgment called the Day of
Atonement has just passed, and
they have received assurance
that their sins are forgiven and that God
accepts them.
This festival is a time for great gladness and thanksgiving, acknowledging
God’s provision for their physical needs,
and His assurance of their salvation.

but more importantly, the education is

The work of God is no longer popular or
‘cool,’ so your work is of great importance
for children who are naturally attracted to
something greater than themselves, but do
not even know that they search for God.
There is such peace in all of your programs. The information is so important,

of other children—need to know that it
