It’s Worth Remembering
Dear Partner,
Recently, I heard Danny Shelton tell a miracle story in Ft.
Worth, Texas, that I’d heard many times. But this time, because
of the recent assassination of Boris Nemtsov in Moscow, it had
more meaning than ever before.

In 1992, Pastor John Carter and The Carter Report ministry
joined Danny Shelton and 3ABN to conduct an evangelistic series in Russia. Originally
planned for Moscow, the series was moved to Nizhny Novgorod, a city known as Gorky
during the Communist days, and this move proved to be providential.
Pastor Carter and Danny were summoned to appear before the very young Regional
Governor, Boris Nemtsov, and the Russian Orthodox leaders, and during that meeting,
the governor demanded they both leave the country. Over 2,500 new Christians had just
been baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and now the Russian Orthodox
leaders were very angry, and had put pressure on Governor Nemtsov.
The meeting was not going well for Pastor Carter, until he pulled out a letter written
by a Ph.D university English professor from that city. In that letter she explained how
she had never known if there was a God or not, but that He had used Pastor Carter’s
meetings to change her life. Then he read the signature—Julia Outkina—and the governor
said, “That’s my sister!”
God used that letter to change the course of history and allow Pastor Carter, Danny,
and their teams to continue working in Russia. Shortly after this, 3ABN began rebuilding a
partially completed building that was in shambles, and today it serves as 3ABN’s Russian
headquarters, and is the largest Protestant building in the former Soviet Union! 3ABN
Russian programs are now broadcast 24/7 by satellite, and our ministry continues to
grow as more cable outlets are added each month. Julia Outkina continues as executive
director of 3ABN Russia, and her faith is strong.
God used Boris Nemtsov in 1992 just as surely as He used Nebuchadnezzar and other
leaders of old. 3ABN is not involved in politics in America, Russia, or anywhere else in
the world. We neither condone nor condemn his political views. But when someone
does something this significant for God’s work, we feel it is certainly worth remembering.

God performs miracles in the lives of
those who trust Him and move toward
Him in faith, and the small Seventh-day
Adventist church that used to be located
on the outskirts now stands on top of a
mountain downtown!
Following the evangelistic meetings,
3ABN’s board of directors and Danny
Shelton made the decision to establish
a 3ABN branch in Nizhny Novgorod,
and the Lord found people in the United
States and in Russia who answered His
call with, “Here we are! Send us!”
Out of an unfinished and dilapidated
palace of culture that was in ruins, the
Lord gradually erected a building that
would later be known as our Russian
Evangelism Center. As one of the city’s
best modern-day attractions, this facility
is also home to our Russian television and
radio studios.

n the late 1980s and early 1990s, evangelist John Carter and his team had a passion
to reach as many Russians as possible for Jesus. And finally, their long-cherished dream came true in 1992 when they held evangelistic meetings in Nizhny
Novgorod (formerly called Gorky during the Communist regime). Although the city
had been closed to all foreigners for many decades, this evangelistic series turned
the lives of its attendees—and the entire city—upside down!
Preparation
By God’s grace, and the support of 3ABN viewers,
this magnificent building now houses 3ABN
studios, Seventh-day Adventist Conference offices,
and two large church congregations!
I am humbled when I look back on
how the Lord taught me all the skills I
would need for this multi-functional
ministry long before I began working

to work at the newly completed Christian
television studio as a host, then as chief
editor of Christian programs, and finally,
as executive director.
At first, individual 3ABN Russian
programs were being carried by over 200
regional stations in Russia and abroad,
but God was preparing us for a much
larger future, first with Internet broadcasting in 2009, and then satellite broadcasting in 2013!

year’s 3ABN Homecoming Camp Meeting. During that event he was clearly
impressed that 3ABN Russia should go

programs, but only a few hours of airtime, this had been our long-cherished
dream—although we never dared to

hope it might come true, since it meant
a significant financial commitment every
month. But it did come true through the
wonderful support of our 3ABN viewers,
and we began broadcasting our 3ABN
Russia network via satellite on November
23, 2013!
What a tremendous event in the history of salvation for the Russian-speaking
people of this planet!
New Opportunity
For the next year we earnestly worked
to enter into partnerships with cable
companies that would include us in their
channel lineup, and since then, God has
blessed us by signed agreements with 30
cable companies that cover 44 cities and
seven towns all over Russia! This was
far more than we expected, but many
more cities still remain unreached. So
to become better known to the Russian
television market, we set our sights on
taking part in CSTB 2015, an international cable company, TV content, and
satellite communications convention in
Moscow this year.

I must admit to being rather doubtful
about participating in this event, since
we had very limited resources. But our
3ABN Russia team insisted, “Let’s go
ahead in faith!” and I’m glad we did.
God blessed us tremendously and performed a number of miracles that gave
us funds to pay for the participation fee,
print 2,000 catalogs and 4,000 booklets,
design a beautiful booth, and prepare
nice gifts for our partners!
In my eyes, one of the most power-
ful miracles happened with our booth
placement. Originally we were given a
less expensive place in a far corner of the
convention hall. But, for some reason,
the organizers had to change the booth
layout, and moved us to a busy crossing next to a well-known Russian TV
company! In addition, they placed our
channel into their official catalog—and
never asked us to pay for it.
Certainly the Lord is on His throne,
and is performing His perfect will!
How could I have been doubtful about
participating in this event?
Huge Success
We are happy to report that participating in CSTB 2015 was a huge success.
Over 22,000 people came through the
exhibits, including representatives from
over 400 cable companies in Russia and
the former Soviet Union.
Despite the fact that many of them
were learning about 3ABN Russia for
the first time, ten companies offered to
broadcast our programs immediately,

and 60 others gave us their contact
information and took our materials for
consideration.
In addition, six re-broadcasters offered
to partner with us via IPTV (streaming
television over the Internet). Our 3ABN
Russia news will be covered in Russian
periodicals such as TV Week, Cable
Operator, TV Satellite, and Television
and Radio Broadcasting. There were even
people willing to distribute our programs
in airplanes and hotels!

Our Purpose
Our tag line is 3ABN Australia Radio: The Word Made Audible. How do you
like it? It captures our evangelistic focus at 3ABN Australia Radio. Every program
we produce for our regional listeners in Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New
Guinea has an identifiable evangelistic purpose, and God is opening doors for our
programmes to reach a wider audience.
Evangelistic Outreach
Last January a church team from Queensland conducted an
evangelistic series on Ontong Java, an isolated atoll to the north of
the Solomon Islands. When Seventh-day Adventists tried to enter
in 2007, they were chased out; but this time they were welcomed,
and 3ABN Australia Radio supplied programmes for the radio
station that was established.

Touching Lives
Closer to home, there are indications
that programmes are reaching their
intended audience. One man told a
3ABN Australia supporter how he appreciated an interview that he heard with
Pastor Colin Winch, a retired missionary pilot and church administrator. The
stories touched him powerfully, which
surprised him, as he considered himself
to have no religious inclinations.
There’s an avenue through which God
can touch the life of each listener with the
gospel. Our role is to produce a diverse
range of programmes that package the
good news in appealing ways. It may be a
story, a Bible presentation, a book reading,
or a discussion. It might be a devotional,
a prayer, or a piece of carefully selected
music. God knows what’s required, and
He inspires us to produce programmes
with relevant focus and content.
3ABN Australia Radio began broadcasting in September 2014 and combines
our local content with 3ABN Radio
(USA) content. We began with three
locally produced programmes, and by
the end of this year, we’ll be producing a
suite of 12 locally produced programmes
each week, covering the Bible, prophecy,
science, children, youth, lifestyle, human
interests, and other topics. Additionally, radio documentaries on the 800th
anniversary of the signing of the Magna
Carta, and the centenary of the death of
Ellen G. White will be broadcast in June
and July, respectively.
Action Plan
Behind all this is our action plan for
2015 called Ten Thousand Points of
Light. It’s an integrated approach to radio
evangelism, including the establishment
of a pastoral team and the revitalization
of our radio website. We’ve asked God
for 10,000 regular listeners who are not
of our faith. You can be part of the fulfillment of our mission by praying for us,
financially supporting our radio development fund, and promoting us. If you
have family, friends, or colleagues living
in Australia, New Zealand, or Papua New
Guinea, please consider inviting them to
connect with our radio programmes.

necessary funds, and began to fall behind.
Finally, I received a call from Pastor Miguel Ramos, who told me the
churches had decided to tell the station
owner that they were unable to continue
renting the channels.
Pastor Ramos made that sad phone
call and gave the bad news, but what he
heard next really shocked him!
“No, I will not turn off the channels!”

blessing our community, and I cannot
turn them off. However, I can’t give these
stations to you for free. Please meet with
your people and see what you can do. But
for now, I will not turn them off!”

They paid for two months, and in a

Adventist Church, they said, “We’ll pay
for one more month, if you’ll take over
making the monthly payments to keep
both channels on the air.”
After hearing that story, I called 3ABN
founder, Danny Shelton, and 3ABN president, Pastor Jim Gilley. They decided we
should encourage the Houston church
members to continue this worthy project,

late January.
On Friday my wife Idalia and I presented the message and shared testimonies in the Alief Spanish Seventh-day
Adventist Church, followed by Pastor Jim
Gilley’s Sabbath School, and an inspiring
worship service by Danny Shelton at a
packed Houston Central Seventh-day
Adventist Church.
Even more blessings came that afternoon as we heard inspirational music
from Reggie and Ladye Love Smith,
and inspiring messages and testimonies
from Danny Shelton, Jim Gilley, and my
wife Idalia.
Pastors Ramos and Rojas told us that
since they began inserting a local number
on those channels, they’ve received many
calls asking for prayer, for directions to
their churches, and for Bible studies. In
fact, someone had already been baptized!
We encourage you to pray for the
churches in the Houston area, as they
endeavor to keep 3ABN and 3ABN
Latino on the air and bring the everlasting gospel to the millions of people in
that great city.

a ny graduation ceremonies take place around the end of May, and although I
must admit that they’re not my favorite event, the excitement of the students
and their families is infectious! Graduates and their families are proud of their
accomplishments, career plans are made, and after the ceremony, graduates toss
their caps in the air in celebration.
However, in sharp contrast to that celebratory mood, we have the everyday life
of the child that can’t read. Our inner-city children in particular, are illiterate, and
these statistics will shock you:

Absolutely not! Studies show that
when these same children are
worked with one-on-one, their
grades improve, self-confidence
goes through the roof, and their
behavior is markedly different.
So what can we do? Dare to
Dream’s mission is to offer the
gospel and tools for living to the
inner city, so how can we help
improve their spiritual lives while
offering them the tool of reading?

Unteachable?
Well, we have been given a great
solution! We are suggesting that
pastors around the country open
literacy, or reading centers in their
churches!
Think about it: their churches
will be open to the community several nights a week, drawing innercity residents and allowing them to
get familiar with their services and
personnel. They will offer children
a positive experience in learning,
and lead them to seek God in His
Word, for now they can begin to
read it for themselves! For pastors
who have been seeking more community
involvement, this is a no-brainer. This
plan also works for retired schoolteachers
who want to make a difference.
One literac y program that has
impressed us at Dare to Dream is
called, TestOurKids.com. This is an
outstanding program, tailor-made for
our children. The founder and CEO of
TestOurKids.com is Yusuf Salaam, a
man who is passionate about literacy.
He says, “Everyday I think, I can change
these children’s lives! We’re fighting for our
children, and that cannot stop!”
Yusuf is serious about helping our kids,
and literacy is his legacy.

W
e call it cabin fever, and depending
on where you live in the Northern Hemisphere, and how much
snow your locality averages, it can set in
any time from about mid-January until
almost the end of March.
For those of us in America, the late
fall and early winter days are dominated
by the big family and travel holidays of
Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year.
And as much as these holidays engender
a great sense of joy and family fellowship,
as a rule, they leave in their wake a laundry list of potential misery. This misery
includes paying for things we bought on
credit (much to our regret), and eating
too much, too often, and too late. Then
there’s that unavoidable letdown we
experience after a time of great joy and
celebration. The house is quiet, the guests
have gone home, and we’re left to return
to our old routine.
Then there’s the fact that the colder
months are usually beset by drab, slate
gray, sunless days that tend towards
depression. Adding to this toxic stew is
the fact that the cold usually keeps us
in the house for long periods of time,
causing vitamin D to drop due to lack of
sunlight. We breath and re-breath stale
furnace-heated air that’s rarely exchanged
for fresh, outside air. Our windows are
closed, and many times, covered with a
clear plastic film to keep the heat in and
the cold out. All these factors conspire to
create a depressive state that can last for
long periods of time.
Devil’s Tool
So how can we get out of that state of
mind? Depression is not something we
want to be in for long periods of time.
Ellen White cautions us that depression is
a tool of the devil and should be avoided
like the plague!
First, we must remember that the Lord
never sends us discouragement! There’s
nothing to be gained from surrendering
to depression, but there’s much that can
be lost!
Next, consider the fact that cold winter days provide a great opportunity to
spend time in God’s Word. Let the sun of
the Son of Righteousness shine His love
light into your room. You will find that
Bible reading is a great blessing; but Bible
study is panning for gold! Your search
will be greatly rewarded, since the Lord
promises great spiritual rewards to those
who spend time studying the Scriptures.
May I also suggest you spend some
time watching uplifting Christian preaching and teaching on television? You may
use any facilitating media—from your
television to your smartphone, or your
tablet—and 3ABN Proclaim! fits that
bill nicely!
Results
After you’ve spent time in these activities, you may be sufficiently motivated
to engage in something that may be
the strongest prescription to cure most
depressions: Find someone or some

omething you don’t see every day
is happening in California’s Death
Valley National Park. Located within
the park is a dried lakebed called
the Racetrack Playa. And found on the
surface of that lakebed are rocks that move...
on their own. Or so it seems.
After discovering that rocks were leaving trails
behind them, scientists set out to explain how these
heavy, lifeless objects were able to move from one place to
another. First they thought it was the strong winds, and then
they thought it was the sand whirlwinds, or dust devils. Next,
they thought people must have been playing a joke, because many
of those rocks weighed as much as 700 pounds! It wasn’t possible that
a person or even a windstorm could push those rocks around!
Finally, a NASA scientist discovered the real answer to this puzzling
question. He found that the rocks moved only under the right weather conditions. During the night, if the lakebed is covered in just a shallow amount
of water, the falling temperatures cause the water to freeze. Then the ice that
forms around the rocks makes them float just a little off the ground, and the
blowing wind pushes them across the muddy lakebed floor, etching a trail.
When the sun comes up, the water evaporates and the lakebed dries
back up, leaving an impression in the ground. We leave an impression everywhere we go, too. Whether it’s at school, a
store, the playground, or a friend’s house, always
remember that we are an example of who
Jesus is. Strive each day to leave behind trails of kindness, compassion,
friendliness, and love, so that others will see Jesus in you!

we married. You see, I was an atheist, and now I was married to a believer! They
tried to persuade me of their “truth,” but I was quite adamant. “Leave me alone
about your God and your Bible,” I said. “I don’t want to discuss this!”
They respected my wishes.
BLESSED
Gradually I began to learn about the Bible in a way that was acceptable to me:
logical and understandable. That method of learning continues today. Three years
later, I was baptized, and my extraordinary life with God began.
I enjoyed going to the Seventh-day Adventist church, and tried to participate
in all their events. I got involved in presenting healthy cooking classes and shared
Jesus with my family in Russia. The Lord blessed my efforts, and my parents decided
to get baptized. Then my friend Natasha, her mother, and another friend were
baptized, followed by my husband and
his older brother in Slovakia. Even my
sister-in-law and her daughter were
baptized after his abrupt death, and I
praise God for all of them!
My desire to read the Bible and learn
more about Jesus and His ministry
ignited a passion to share this with
others. So when I heard a call in church
for literature evangelists, I quit my
elementary school job immediately.
It had been a good way to learn the
Slovak language, and the salary was

working for the Lord, though, and for the next six years He blessed my work and
five people were baptized as a result. I thank God for those wonderful experiences!

y name is Elena, and I was born in the Soviet Union in 1963, when God’s
Word was still forbidden. I knew Karl Marx’s famous statement, “Religion
is the opium of the people” all too well, and my family members didn’t
believe in God, except for my grandmother Evdokija, who worshiped an image of
God that hung in a corner of her room. I remember saying, “Grandma, why should
I talk to a picture? How does it know what is right? God doesn’t exist, anyway!”
At the time, I had no idea there were other believers, except for the badly dressed
and illiterate old women who wore scarves and went to church to pray from time
to time. When I looked at them, I thought,
Karl Marx was right!
During my third year at the university
I met a Czechoslovak man who was there
on the Druzhba (Friendship) Exchange
Program. After graduation we married and
moved back to his country.
My mother-in-law, Esther, made a strong
impression on me. She had a cheerful,
helpful, and open nature, and she became
my only friend until I met other women my
age. But I was shocked to discover that my
husband’s family was religious, and I was

BITTERNESS
However, there’s more to this story. Six months after my baptism, an American
pastor held a large evangelistic series in our city. Many people attended the meetings,
and I was one of those who assisted by giving Bible studies. When it was over, so
many people were baptized that we had to start a whole new church!
The new believers needed a lot of instruction on how to study the Bible and how
to know and implement God’s will into their lives. But along the way, the problems

that arose created an unfriendly atmosphere. For six years I struggled to overcome
those problems, but finally, I was so disappointed that I stopped going to church.
Not long afterwards, problems with my marriage ended in a divorce, and I felt
very alone. I longed for fellowship with my brothers and sisters in Jesus, and I still
believed in the church doctrines. I faithfully returned my tithe, and never worked
on Sabbath. I even tried to encourage others to attend my former church, but it
was hard to invite people to a church service I didn’t attend myself. But God was
merciful, and some of those people actually did come.
HE SPOKE TO ME
During that lonely time I began asking, Lord, are there any other people on this
earth with whom I can fellowship? Are there any who can love me as their sister in
Christ, people who I can love in return?
I had always appreciated the words of Ellen White, since they had strengthened
my faith and kept me from becoming
disappointed with God. Now, as I read
her writings, I longed to find others who
wanted that same close relationship that
she had with Him.
Time passed, and one Friday night I
began searching for something spiritual
on the Internet—and that’s when I discovered 3ABN Russia! The first program I
watched was Marina Potapova’s testimony

DEEP FORGIVENESS
Another essential message I received was that my relationship with my former
brothers and sisters from church was not right. I needed to repent from my sin of
hatred; however, forgiveness did not come easily.
Finally, I did exactly what I’d heard in those testimonies: I knelt down, closed my
eyes, and poured everything out to the Lord. I told Him, I don’t love them, Lord, and
I don’t know what to do with these feelings.

His answer? Go to church!
The impression was very strong, but the miracle didn’t happen in my heart until
I was on my way to church the next month. The closer I got, the more I felt a great
love for these people welling up inside me. This was not ordinary sympathy. It was
an unearthly, ethereal love. By the time I arrived, I couldn’t help but hug and kiss
every one of them—I simply loved them all! This overwhelming feeling remained
for several hours. It was extraordinary and delightful!
GOD’S LOVE
I’ve had this same experience several other times, as well. A good friend whom
I’d known for 19 years was married to a man whom I honestly did not like because
of the way he treated her. I’d told him how I felt several times, pleading with him to
change his behavior, but nothing helped.
One day, as I visited them, he began complaining about work—how difficult it was,
and how people weren’t very nice. “Nothing ever works out for me,” he complained.
And then it happened. I was suddenly compelled to tell him that he was the one
who needed to change, but even as I spoke those words, I felt God’s powerful love
for this struggling soul, and it
grew stronger by the minute.

Finally, I understood clearly that the most important words in Heaven are unconditional love, and that the most severe sin is to not love! 1 John 3:10–14 says, “In this
the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not
practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. For this
is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another,
not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he
murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous. Do not marvel,
my brethren, if the world hates you. We know that we have passed from death to
life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death.”
(Emphasis supplied.) God used those experiences to make clear that He wanted me
back in church, and I thank Him for giving me the wisdom and strength to do so.
I could not keep what God had done for me to myself, so I decided to share it
with those around me. I realized that many problems could be solved with the help
of 3ABN Russian programs, so I began to show them to a small group at church.
Soon a decision was made to translate them into Slovak and distribute them via
personal e-mail contacts to approximately 300 people. The feedback was huge!
People loved the programs, so we decided to start our own website to post 3ABN
programs and articles.
TALENTS
During this time, through God’s leading, I realized I needed to support 3ABN
Russia financially. Later, I was invited by the network to come visit them in Russia,
and what a great blessing it was to see how they operated!

At the time I was working as a business trainer, and Tatiana Malysheva asked me
to record a session with her called, “Leadership and Christianity” for her series, My
Character and Me. God blessed, and I was able to get a permit to return to Nizhny
Novgorod the following year for the recording. While I was there I was asked to
provide the TV staff with some training on how to better understand each other at
work, using information about personality types.
Now I must mention an important matter. Before my second visit to Russia, God
distinctly impressed me three times that I could best use all the talents He’d given
me in Russia, and particularly in Nizhny Novgorod. So you can imagine why I was
quick to agree after I got the call to work there!
This is a big step for me, since I’ll be leaving the place I know to live in a completely
new city, and a country that I don’t know very well at all. But the Lord prepared me
in advance by revealing His will for me very clearly.
I’m so happy that I can serve the Lord in both management and in the creation
of new programs. I’ve been volunteering for seven months as 3ABN Russia’s production manager as I wait for my temporary resident permit, but I often remember
my prayer six years ago, “My Heavenly Father, You have given me so many talents.
You have taught me so many precious things. Please send me where I can best honor
Your gifts and work for You and for humanity!”
All this has happened. May His Holy Name be glorified! .

After meeting Jeremy in New Zealand, and seeing the Revive Café cookbooks, 3ABN’s Brenda Walsh invited
him to be a guest cook on her weekly
3ABN Today cooking program.
At that time, 3ABN’s program development manager, Shelley Quinn, asked
him to chat with her about his vision
for a cooking program after they had
finished taping.
As Jeremy tells it, “I love all cooking
shows, however my vision was different
from any 3ABN had done before. So I
told Shelley that I would love to do a
show that would portray the way I cook
a meal at home.”

Health Facts
From the kitchen of Elena Polaskova
Elena is a certified business trainer and owner
of an educational company. She also serves
as production manager for 3ABN Russia.
Ingredients
• 1⅔ cups yellow split peas
• 4⅔ cups water, divided
• 1 onion, finely chopped
• 4–5 potatoes, peeled and cubed
• 2 Tbsp cold pressed sunflower oil
• 1¼ tsp salt
• tsp marjoram
• 4 bay leaves
Directions
1 Soak peas in cold water for two hours,
then drain.
2 Cook peas in 2⅓ cups fresh, unsalted
water. Bring peas to a boil, then simmer
for about five minutes.
3 Drain water, then add 2⅓ cups fresh water,
chopped onion, and bay leaves.
4 Simmer peas for 30 minutes, or until they
are thoroughly cooked, then add potatoes.
5 Cook for 30 minutes, or until potatoes are
done. Add sunflower oil and sprinkle with
salt and marjoram, and serve the soup
with bread.

Just think for a moment about how
diseases spread. Many pathogens like
viruses and bacteria are spread from
human to human. But sometimes animals spread disease: bats and Ebola,
rabbits and tularemia, pigs and trichinosis, chickens and salmonella, mosquitos
and malaria, avian flu, mad cow disease,
and rabies, to name a few. Then there’s
contaminated feces that spread diseases
like campylobacter. In all, there are more
than 30 diseases spread by animals and
nearly 50 more that are spread by bugs.
Treatment often involves giving someone
an antibiotic, or just living through the
illness. But avoiding the problem might
be an easier and more effective solution.
Avoidance is one of the
best methods to prevent
disease, and quarantine is
a useful measure to prevent
its spread. This method of
disease control has been
present through the ages.
Now, let’s look around
the world at the spread
of chronic diseases, such
as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.
Would staying away from
the causative vector be
a good idea? Could we
quarantine people from
the causative agent?
I suggest that if we avoid chronic exposure, the risks diminish—just as staying
away from sick people diminishes our flu
exposure. Avoid cigarettes and the risk
of developing lung cancer diminishes.
Avoid fats and you’ll lower the risk of
cardiovascular disease. Avoid processed
foods and lower your risk of hypertension. Limit the exposure to high fructose
corn syrup and processed sugar and
lower your risk of “catching” diabetes. Do
we need vaccines for chronic diseases, or
do we just need common sense?
As many countries are lowering their
rates of infectious disease, the rates of
chronic disease are on the rise. Chronic
disease is harmful to the economy—
not only because of the cost involved
in treatment, but also because of lost
productivity.
We probably cannot quarantine a
country from high fructose corn syrup,
cigarettes, or fats, but it is a thought. We
don’t think twice against avoiding infectious diseases and the vectors that cause
the problem. Let’s use some common
sense and avoid the vectors that are now
taking more lives than the flu! Our Great
Physician wants us to be healthy. He will
help us use common sense.

’m not sure when the term came
into our modern vocabulary, but the
word “self-esteem” has been around
since the mid-1600s. It’s also changed in
meaning, from “thinking too much of
yourself,” to “feeling good about yourself.”
I guess it’s little wonder that it’s become a
buzzword in today’s “feel good” society.
But what is self-esteem all about?
Some years ago, a popular television
program featured an ongoing skit of a
mock self-help show called Daily Affirmations with Stuart Smalley. Stuart,
played by current United States Senator

front of a mirror and repeat affirmations
to himself before going live on his fictional television program. He was always
trying to convince himself that he was
good enough, smart enough, and that
people really liked him. We laughed at

hen I was a kid, my grandpa
played baseball in the minor
leagues, in the Sacramento Valley. On occasion, he played against Babe
Ruth and Lou Gehrig. He had pictures
and baseballs signed by both of them.
A lot of people looked to Babe Ruth
as kind of a hero, because he was the
first player to hit 714 home runs. I was
impressed too—until I found out that as
a left-handed hitter, hitting to the right
field fence in his home stadium in New
York, he only had to hit the ball 296 feet
for a home run. Meanwhile, Willie Mays,
in his home stadium of Candlestick Park,
hitting to the center field fence (410 feet
away), could drive the ball up to 400 feet,
and it would be caught for an out. This
didn’t seem fair.
John Wayne could have been my hero,
too, but I noticed he could shoot nine or
ten people without reloading his gun that
only held six bullets.
My Hero
Sadly, even if we look at each other as
heroes, we all still end up in the grave.
But there is one Hero who walked out of
the grave, and offers to raise us out of our
graves, too. He gave us life and now offers
us eternal life. Who else can give you that?
Imagine this Hero who brings justice,
mercy, power, wisdom, knowledge, and
love to the friendship. But our Creator has
an adversary who wants to replace God’s
standard of Law with his own standard.

God’s Sanctuary
and Royal Palace
Based on Exodus 25–27, 30, 36–38, and 40

W
hen God gives Israel His covenant at Mount Sinai, He functions as both
their God and their King. So when He requests them to build a portable
sanctuary, He wants it located in the middle of their encampment. It will
be His dwelling place, and will allow Him to move with His people.
Royal Palace
The ancient Hebrews think in a concrete and literal manner, so
God uses visual cues to help them understand His sovereignty
and His mercy.
The sanctuary is in one sense a royal palace, with two
rooms and an outer court. The throne room contains the
golden ark, covered with winged cherubim at either end. In
the ancients’ way of thinking, these are throne guardians.
The ark represents the lower part of God’s throne or His
footstool, since God says, “Heaven is My throne and
earth is My footstool.” Its lid is the
mercy seat, where in ancient times,
one received mercy by bowing
at the king’s feet.
The adjacent room is the king’s living
quarters with three pieces of furniture. On the north side is the table
of showbread with twelve loaves of bread and a pitcher with a bowl to

God’s Temple
The sanctuary is also God’s temple with its
golden furniture. It has a court and two rooms—the
Most Holy Place and the Holy Place. In the Most Holy
Place, the ark symbolizes the footstool of His throne,
demonstrating that He is God of both Heaven and earth.
On the north side of the Holy Place is the table with
showbread, also known as the bread of His presence.
The twelve loaves of bread represent the twelve tribes of Israel who are always
in His presence. They also serve as Israel’s continual thank offering to God. On the
south side stands the seven-branched lampstand, fueled by pure olive oil. It symbolizes the light of God’s presence.
Finally, next to the curtain that separates the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place,
is the altar of incense. The sweet smell from it permeates the room and rises over
the curtain to perfume the Most Holy Place. This incense symbolizes the prayers
of the righteous that ascend to God.
How God Deals With Sin
The layout of the sanctuary demonstrates how God
deals with sin. The entrance to the court is on the east,
where the worshiper approaches God. The sinner seeks forgiveness by bringing a lamb as a sin offering, and the priest
offers it on the altar of whole burnt offering. He then cleanses
himself at the laver and enters the Holy Place with the blood,
thereby transferring the sin to the sanctuary.
In the Holy Place, the smoke of the altar of incense rises over the
curtain into the Most Holy Place as the high priest intercedes for the sinner before
God. On the yearly Day of Atonement, the sanctuary is cleansed of all sin.
In His wisdom, God uses the sanctuary to communicate His covenant in a
show-and-tell manner. His sanctuary is both a divine dwelling place and a royal
palace—each with their distinctive functions and multiple meanings.
