and interacts with the world. As time goes on,
we will see more and more students with autism
entering our classrooms. Through the eyes of
Temple Grandin, we will discover new ideas,
gain a better understanding, and learn how to
better serve our autistic students. Prerequisite:

Why Are Kids So Angry!?
W
hy do caring educators find themselves in self-defeating situations when
it comes to angry kids? This training
takes an in-depth look at how anger, hurt, and
frustration can continue in a never-ending cycle if
educators are not equipped with ways to ensure it
won’t get out of control. Emphasis will be placed
on why so many students are entering classrooms
angry, hostile, and insubordinate, and what teachers can do about it. For K-12 educators, guidance
counselors, and social workers. Instructor: Jennifer
Rich-Walters, Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES alternative education teacher, educational consultant.

Using Fun Games to Strengthen
Math Skills
A
re you trying to get that reluctant
math student to practice mathematical thinking and improve his confidence
and proficiency? How about getting out some
tried and true “family” games that fortify math
concepts while having fun? We will look at familiar
games and dissect the math that is there for learning, brainstorm ways to share games with others
to save money and encourage variety, and think
about ways to use parts of games to keep the
learning happening! This is a great way to explore
the games you might want to add to your collection for classroom or home use. For all educators
and parents. Instructor: Amy Senn, Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES alternative education, GED instructor, middle school math and science teacher.

NEW! Using Questions to Engage
and Motivate Students
Q
uestioning is an important component
of the teaching and learning process,
permitting teachers to establish what
students already know and facilitating acquisition of new concepts and ideas. Questions can
be used to actively engage students in the learning process. Research has demonstrated that
teacher questions have the greatest impact in
fostering critical thinking skills in students. In this
workshop, we will share strategies for embedding effective questions into your teaching to
increase student participation and use of critical thinking skills. For all educators and parents.

NEW! Incorporating Literacy
Across All Content Areas
L
iteracy—the ability to read, write, speak,
listen and think effectively—enables
students to learn, and to communicate
clearly in and out of school. Adolescents need
to have strong literacy skills so that they can
understand academic content and communicate in credible ways as scientists, mathematicians, historians, artists, etc. The focus of this
training will be to look at strategies for embedding skills in all content areas that support the
development of reading, writing, listening, and
speaking in appropriate ways for each discipline. For all teachers, K-12. Instructor: Becky

NEW! Differentiated Instruction
I
n a typical classroom, students vary in their
academic abilities, learning styles, personalities, interests, background knowledge and
experiences, and levels of motivation for learning. Differentiated instruction is an instructional process that has excellent potential to
positively affect learning by offering teachers
a means to provide instruction to a range of
students. In this three-hour workshop we will
explore the fundamentals of differentiated
instruction and begin to apply those concepts
to our current instruction. Participants should
bring a unit of instruction to work on. For all
teachers, K-12. Instructor: Becky Grossman, East

NEW! Interviewing Skills
for Educators
S
ince interviewing is a necessary skill in
obtaining a job, and one that determines
the future of a teacher, it is important that
aspiring teachers know how to conduct themselves appropriately on an interview. “candidates” will be given interview questions ahead
of time and will be taught how to answer them
in a most effective manner. Then, each “candidate” will participate in a mock interview (the
set up is similar to that of a real interview), and
will be critiqued by his/her classmates as well as
the instructor. After participating in this workshop, potential educators will walk into a reallife interview fully prepared, void of surprise.
The following topics will also be covered:
•What should a candidate bring to an
interview?
•Appropriate dress.
•Appropriate questions an interviewee
should ask—this will also include
inappropriate questions as well.
•The composition of an interviewing
committee—who will be asking the
questions?
•Preparation for an interview—what
should an interviewee do to prepare
him/herself prior to the interview?
•Applying for jobs online.
