Product Profiles: What Does 'Rhenish' Mean?
Ask the Expert: "Some of my Utrecht
brushes have 'Rhenish' stamped on the
handle. Is this a type of bristle?"
A: 'Rhenish" is one of the original Utrecht brand
names, dating back to 1949 when the company
was founded as Utrecht Linens. The word
Rhenish means "of the Rhine", referring to the
former West Germany where some of our
products are still made.
The Rhenish brand still exists today for our topquality long handled natural bristle brushes (still
handmade to our specifications in Germany) .
The retired line of Rhenish Oils were made for
us in West Germany until 1960, when we began
crafting Utrecht Professional Oil Colors at our
Brooklyn facility, which is still the exclusive
source of our paints.
