The CompleatAdvisor Update FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 23RD – 27TH, 2015 PORTFOLIO MANAGER’S COMMENTARY Recent volatility has led to some raised eyebrows and concern over the near-term direction of U.S. equity markets. It is our opinion that yesterday’s sell off was primarily an act of taking profit and rebalancing portfolios at quarter-end. Two of the hardest hit areas were technology at large and more specifically biotechnology. It is important to note that technology and biotechnology have been outperformers for much of the past 5 years, and it is reasonable that those who have been in these spaces will occasionally take some profit. The timing of the sell-off to some degree can be attributed to the end of the quarter, where managers look to rebalance portfolios, and those most heavily sold will be those that have appreciated disproportionately to the rest of the portfolio. It can also be tied back into a lower than expected durable goods new orders figure which caused some concern regarding the near term strength of the economy. Our opinion on the strength of the U.S. economy is not shifting as a result of a single data point, since month to month these figures can tell very different stories. Rather it is the longer term trends in multiple economic indicators which provide the most relevant guidance on the state of the economy. For instance, while February’s durable goods new orders fell by approximately 1.35%, January saw this same figure increase by approximately 2%. As a result, no major allocation changes have been made this week. PORTFOLIO ALLOCATION UPDATE Conservative Decreased the allocation to industrials and health care, while increasing allocation to preferred stock and aggregate bonds. Moderate Increased the allocation to municipal debt, while reducing equity exposure. Growth No major allocation changes have been made.
