Thursday, April 2 -- Maundy Thursday
On Maundy Thursday, after we gather for our pot luck supper, we will
process to the sanctuary, celebrate the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper and
remember the seven last words of Christ from the cross. Rev. Selena Blackwell
and Pastor Dale will lead the worship.
Sunday, April 5 – Easter
Scripture: Acts 10:34-43, Psalm 118:1-2 and 14-24, 1 Corinthians 15:1-11,
Mark 16:1-8
Obviously the theme of the day will be the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Our worship will be filled with uplifting songs of resurrection, praise, and
alleluia’s. The Lord’s Supper will be celebrated. There won’t be any Sunday
school on Easter, but we will introduce the new Sunday school schedule during
our Easter breakfast gathering.
Sunday, April 12 – Second Sunday of Easter
Scripture: Acts 4:32-35, Psalm 133, 1 John 1:1-2:2, John 20:19-31
The gospel lesson on this second Sunday of Easter retells the story of
Jesus’ appearance to the disciples, without Thomas, gathered in the locked
room. Our lessons continue with the members of the newborn church of Jesus
Christ sharing their possessions so that none among them have any need. The
epistle lesson speaks of the God who is light and God’s followers who have
fellowship with one another and are cleansed from sin. Pastor Dale will lead
worship and Rev. Selena Blackwell will be the preacher.
Teen/Adult Sunday School: On our first Sunday of our new Sunday
Schedule, we have invited Corporal Robinson of the Dorchester County Sheriff’s
Department to help us better understand internet and phone security. It is a topic
especially appropriate for teens and their parents. Corporal Robinson, the
resource officer for North Dorchester High School, has requested that we forward
as many questions to her before she meets us so she can be as prepared as
possible to help us with our concerns.
Sunday, April 19 – Third Sunday of Easter
Scripture: Acts 3:12-19, Psalm 4, 1 John 3:1-7, Luke 24:36b-48
In the lesson found in the gospel of Luke, Jesus appears to the disciples
once again and in order to calm their fears, shares a simple meal with them and
invites them to touch him. He then offers his final earthly words to them. In the
book of Acts, following the healing of a cripple in the preceding passage, Peter
confronts the Hebrews and their sinful ways and calls them to repent therefore
and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out. In the first epistle of John
we are called children of God.
Teen/Adult Sunday School: On our second Sunday of our new Sunday
School time, we are pleased to announce that Mr. Ted Malkus will be sharing a
portion of his knowledge about our church’s history.
Sunday, April 26 – Fourth Sunday of Easter
Scripture: Acts 4:5-12, Psalm 23, 1 John 3:16-24, John 10:11-18
The fourth Sunday of Easter is often called Good Shepherd Sunday
because we are invited to read the 23rd Psalm (The Lord is my shepherd . . .) and
in the gospel lesson, Jesus describes himself as a shepherd who cares for his
flock. The epistle lesson of I John continues that letter’s theme of the church
being called the children of God and its call for us to love one another. In Acts
the story is not as pleasant as Peter and John are taken before the Temple High
Priests and questioned.
Teen/Adult Sunday School: In our Sunday School time today we will
look at the scripture lessons for the morning and with Pastor’s Dale’s help,
discuss their meaning for the original audience, their meaning today and how a
preacher should preach their message today. Pastor Dale will likely include
much of this discussion in the sermon at worship time.
PASTOR’S UPDATE
Rev. Dale Krotee
New Sunday School Schedule
Beginning Sunday, April 12, our Sunday school will begin at 9:00 am. We will
begin our time together with all ages in one room, singing our favorite Sunday school
songs. We may read the scripture lesson for the day and we will have a little time of
prayer.
Around 9:15 we will go to our classes. The youngest of our children will go the
nursery. Tammy Luthy will be teaching the children ages 4 to 9. Robin Burton will be
working with the children ages 10 to 14 and there will a group/class for older youth and
adults. For the first few weeks we are asking the older youth and adults to meet
together. We may separate these groups later, but for now the topics of the first weeks
are most appropriate for teens and adults.
The classes will be flexible and if siblings want to be with each other or apart
from each other, the teachers have agreed to work with the needs of each family.
Nursery will still be provided during worship and we are supplying children’s bulletins for
the children who are now being asked to attend worship with their families. Pastor Dale
will also attempt to involve the children and youth in the service to a greater degree.
A schedule for the older youth and adult discussions is listed in the worship
schedule on the first page of this newsletter. Suggestions for additional classes and
discussions are welcome. At this time we are considering discussions on parenting,
other faiths, and more local, denominational and worldwide church history.
Internet and Phone Security
On April 12, at our Sunday School time, Corporal Robinson of the Dorchester
County Sheriff’s Department will be helping us better understand internet and phone
security. She is the Sheriff’s Resource Officer for North Dorchester High School. She
is very well respected and we look forward to welcoming her to Immanuel. Since many
of our questions and concerns may be rather specific, she has asked us to forward our
questions to her so she can be prepared to answer them. So, if you have any questions
about phone apps, internet social media programs, or how to keep your children safe
but not isolated from their peers, please forward your questions to Pastor Dale so he
can forward all of our questions to Corporal Robinson.
New Members
We will be welcoming new members shortly. If Pastor Dale has not already been in
touch with you about membership in Immanuel UCC, please contact him. He
may be reached at the office 410-228-4640 or via email: [email protected]
EMERGENCY COLD WEATHER SHELTER:
Providing for three full-time monitors, who stay at the
Shelter with the guests overnight from 6 pm through 8 am
for 7 days a week, and paying for utilities, laundry,
supplies, and building fees comes to about $28,000 per
year. The program is sustained by monetary donations
from local congregations, individuals, grants, foundations
and other non-profit groups.
But the real “angels” in this program are the volunteers! Immanuel Church has donated
countless hours through the generosity of a growing group of members and friends who
are committed to providing help to some of Dorchester County’s most vulnerable.
So, many thanks to our Immanuel volunteers for their help this season:
To Frank Spillman, for all the dinners he planned, prepped and cooked!
To Diane and Jim Murphy, for all the lunches they shopped for and packed.
To those who piled all the dinners, lunches and breakfast food into their
vehicle to take down to the Shelter, Thursday after Thursday.
To all our dessert bakers and providers, including Dolores Dixon, Michal Dixon,
Joyce Wise, Cassie Burton, Marlene Waldus, Ruth Bradley, Jen Burton,
Kathy Kelly and Lou Jones.
To those who helped serve the dinners down at the Shelter, including: Terry Melius,
Robin Burton, Lou & Dennis Jones, Joyce Wise, Lynn Nossick, Jen Burton.
While we have tried to cover everyone, I am sure someone may have been
inadvertently omitted, however, be assured that your assistance and
thoughtfulness has been appreciated!
MAUNDY THURSDAY
Maundy Thursday service on April 2 will begin with a covered dish meal
at 6:00pm in the Fellowship Hall. Worship in the sanctuary to follow
at approximately 6:45pm.
