Introduction: Proteomics is a research area devoted to the analysis of proteins from
complex biological samples. It has been applied to evaluate protein expression, to identify
proteins and characterize their post-translational modifications (PTMs). Examples of such
applications include the analysis of biochemical changes in organisms when exposed to an
adverse environmental condition, allowing a better understanding on organism’s response
and adaptation. Another major application of Proteomics is the discovery of novel diseaseassociated biomarkers with relevant clinical purposes. Two main approaches to undertake
proteomic studies are protein separation by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE)
and protein identification and characterization by MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometry.
Course aims: This course aims to describe the principles of 2DE and MALDI-TOF/TOF mass
spectrometry as well as to provide basic training on protein separation by 2DE, peptide
analysis, protein identification and characterization of post-translational modifications by
mass spectrometry. English will be the speaking language.
Participants: graduated students and researchers that have interests in the field of
proteomics, 2DE and MALDI-TOF/TOF mass spectrometry analyses. Participants are
limited to 20 but a minimum of 10 participants will be required to start the course.
Equivalency to 3 ECTS can be solicited by the students following post-graduate courses at
Porto
