It is the same as trying to solve a puzzle in which some of the pieces are missing and other pieces no longer fit as they once did. Unfortunately, the damage that criminals do in stealing another person's identity and using it to commit fraud often takes far longer to undo than it took the criminal to commit the crimes. This 6-0 start is the best in the long history of Gallaudet football, one of the nation's oldest collegiate football programs. Two more games remain on the schedule. ... As we all know, Beethoven developed his best music after he became deaf. And making the front page news everywhere was that his long lost working manuscript, hidden for years in a dusty library bin, is said to be valued at around 2 million dollars. It shows everyone that just because some people become deaf, their value to society is not lessened. ... Chicago Sky, an expansion team in Women's NBA, has hired Mike Fischer, a deaf man. He will be charting game plays and game tapes on the computer for review by the team coaches. Mike had been performing same chores for the University of Minnesota women's team and for Houston Comets for the past several years. ... Deaf people that follow comedy in silent films will be thrilled to learn that Harold Lloyd films on DVDs will be captioned. Said a follower of captioned movies "finally glad to see the recognition he deserves as one of the top 3 silent comedians next to Chaplin and Keaton. And best of all, the sound features he did are captioned for the very first time." These DVDs will come out on the market next month. EMPLOYMENT OF THE DEAF IN AN INDUSTRIAL CITY As industrial cities go, Akron, Ohio would be considered as a typical. Blue collar deaf individuals work in factories and make good wages. Times have changed. Tire manufacturing plants have fled the town. And with it, the jobs. Instead of these high paying jobs in huge manufacturing plants, the deaf people work in smaller factories, in department stores and in the restaurant industry. The same can be said for auto plants in Detroit, cotton mills in North Carolina and so on. Many deaf people in these locales need to go into retraining for different, but better, employment opportunities. ................................................................. A MULTILINGUAL CHALLENGE For us the deaf that rely on pad and pencil or pointing at posted signs or speaking a single, but easily pronounceable word when dealing with some hearing people, times have changed. Immigrants work at fast food outlets, at gas stations, at hotels. For many of them, their command of English is weak. and it does not help when many immigrants cling to their mother tongues, refusing to improve on their English speaking and English reading skills. The DeafDigest editor recently had a nightmare. He entered a fast food stand and the posted menu was out of reach of the order taker behind the counter. And when the editor pointed at the sign, asking the order taker to please take a look at it, it was interpreted as something "threatening." The order taker simply freaked out; fortunately a co-worker took over and had the order processed with no problems. We, the deaf, deal with these multilingual barriers the best we could. ................................................................. Can't wake up in the morning ? THESE UNFRIENDLY SUPERMARKETS What is an unfriendly supermarket? Let us take the Kroger supermarkets as an example. A deaf person checking out the food at these self-service counters, would not hear the beep telling them something is not right with the scanning of their food purchases. What is so wrong about flashing lights that work in concert with these beeps? Did these automation engineers forget to take the deaf into consideration when designing these self-service machines? COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR - continuing series A CART operator, who is a DeafDigest subscriber, said: In a recent DeafDigest edition, a mistake was mentioned of the word "gas" appearing rather than "grass." Because of the way the steno keyboard is laid out, a captioner would have to depress the letters TKPWRAS in order to get the word "grass" to appear on the screen. If the word "gas" was the desired word, the steno would be TKPWAS. As you can see, it is not like a typewriter keyboard where you would type one letter at a time. We are writing many letters at once so that we can have whole syllables and words in one stroke, like chords on a piano. WHAT DO INTERPRETERS HATE? said a Deaf-blind interpreter I hate it when I interpret for a Deaf-blind student in a college class, he is being patronized by some teachers. Deaf-blind students can do as well as other deaf students; they only just need more time to work on tasks in the classroom Attention - all interpreters: if you wish to share your horror stories, please email these to: mailto:[email protected] THESE POLITICAL CARTOONS DeafDigest editor loves reading these cartoons in the New Yorker magazine. Many of these cartoons, while aiming at the hearing audience, can be "converted" to make points in the Deaf Community. There is one such cartoon - three men were walking on the street. First man, in a business suit, worries about money. Second man, in casual dress, worries about connecting with women. Third man, in Batman attire, worries about sequels. How about this - three deaf individuals in a Deaf Cartoon? First deaf man, wearing a hearing aid, worries about his weak battery and being out of spare batteries on hand. Second deaf man, forgetting his pen and pad, worries on how to communicate with the hearing. Third deaf man, enroute to an appointment, worries about getting a wrong interpreter that would sign a sign language that is not his. Such Hearing Worries. Such Deaf Worries. THESE BY-THE-WAYS Would be interesting piece of work for a Deaf Statistician to compile this bit of Deaf Statistics - focusing on these "by-the-ways." How often is it that we bump into a hearing person on some matter, and the hearing person would utter "oh, by the way, my neighbor is deaf". Or "Oh, by the way, my son is deaf" and so on. Hearing people know each other by six degrees. How many hearing people connect with the deaf by these "by-the-ways"? Same six. Or perhaps every tenth person or whatever? ................................................................. ................................................................. For postings, announcements and employment ad rates, please email mailto:[email protected] for Special Notes, please go to the bottom of the Gold section ................................................................. ................................................................. A HEARING AID COMMERCIAL ON TV There was a hearing aid commercial on TV; it offered a 2 for 1 deal, as if I buy two hearing aids for the price of one. We have been hearing for many years on what a rip off hearing aid vendors inflict on the public in need of such aids. Cannot help but wonder if there is more to that "2 for 1" deal that what it appears to be? ................................................................. ................................................................. Shirley Glassman's Captioning Blooper of the Week: they should upgreat (upgrade) the security ..... News of the Week - Looking Back 5 Years Ago: Flash - this just in - Gallaudet University, in a 3-year pilot program, will say yes to a selected number of sign-language proficient hearing applicants that want to enroll! So limited it will be that only a 2-percent limit of the freshman class will be slotted for hearing students. What this means is that if Gallaudet admits 350 freshmen in September 2001, only seven of them will be hearing students. And it is going to be a campus secret because this plan will not be advertised anywhere nor would the Gallaudet recruiting corps attempt to locate such interested hearing students. This is not a first for Gallaudet. For years Gallaudet has run graduate programs for hearing graduate students. And for several years in the seventies, Gallaudet operated a student exchange program that allowed a limited number of hearing students to take classes for a semester. And while the Vietnam war was at its peak in the early seventies there was a student who was suspected of faking deafness that got admitted to Gallaudet. That student, a Coda, had exemplary sign language skills and was fully accepted by the student body! Acquaintances who knew him said he faked deafness to avoid getting drafted. ..... Deaf Apocalypse of the Week: Approximately 50 different studies have been conducted over the years gauging the intelligence levels of the deaf people in general? Is that all so necessary? How about studies gauging the intelligence levels of the hearing people in general? DeafDigest will wager a bet that the intelligence level of the deaf is the same as the intelligence level of the hearing. So, why waste time and tax payer money on such unnecessary studies? ..... Video Relay Service interpreter's Tips for using the Video Relay Service with ease Hi VRS Users -Did you know that your videophone usually shares the internet line with your computer? That is why it's quite important to not try to use your computer's browser and videophone at the same time. This can lead to a multitude of problems. Often, there will be a blurry screen; your speed may be slow; or there might be a long delay between the time the interpreter finishes the message and the time you get the message; or the screen may tend to freeze up on you. This is often because somewhere in your house, someone is on the internet and has the big blue "E" Explorer browser open. It could be you, your spouse, a roommate, or it could be a child playing an on-line game or doing a google search for their homework. It helps keep communication flowing freely to close the internet while you are making videophone calls. Usually, trying to Instant Message people while also on a videophone call will decrease the quality of your picture by quite a bit. Remember, this is new technology, and very much into the future. And, we are still on the first generation of the mass distribution of this type of technology. Instead of getting frustrated with these new beginnings, let's remember what a miracle it already is and do our best to cooperate with the growing pains we are experiencing. Although some interpreters are able to process calls despite difficulties on the screen, it is hard on their eyes to do so. We are already always short of interpreters, so we'll really appreciate it if you can help us keep our eyes from undue strain whenever possible. And, sometimes, it gets so bad, that no matter how hard we try, we just cannot see you well enough to interpret a call. Someday, maybe we will all have T-1 lines of our own and we will be able to multi-task in our households! --Your VRS Terps ..... Ryan Bondroff's "What you need to know about the DeafBlind?" Can you cook? Can you play sports? Does someone help you all the time? There are many more questions that the kids ask. They are generally curious about how does a DB person live his/her life. .....
