By Kerry Cole
When it comes to technology in the workplace, resistance is futile.
Technology is changing rapidly, and to
succeed, payroll leaders must understand it,
change along with it, and learn to embrace it.
During Tuesday’s Pre-Congress Luncheon,
“New Technology: What It Means for You
and Your Workforce, and How to Embrace
It,” ADP Chief Human Resources Officer
Dermot O’Brien will lead a panel discussion
on the roles of mobile, social media, and the
cloud in business today. ADP is sponsoring
the luncheon.
O’Brien joined ADP in April 2012 and
leads the company’s global human capital
strategy, including talent acquisition, performance management, succession planning,
learning, compensation and benefits, diversity and inclusion, and corporate social
responsibility.
Before joining ADP, he was Executive Vice
President of Human Resources at TIAACREF, where he worked for nine years. He
has also worked in senior HR positions at
Merrill Lynch & Co. and Morgan Stanley.
Staying ahead of technology and determining the best ways to embrace it for your
business and your internal clients is crucial
for tasks as large as a global transformation
or as small as delivering pay statements to
mobile devices.
Hear this panel of power users share how
they use technology to deliver strong solutions to support their workforces and business goals:
• Tonya Caldwell, CPP, Director of Payroll

with Penske Truck Leasing for 28 years.
She participated in a panel discussion

responsible for benefits, compensation,

• Mel Lugo, Corporate Payroll Manager,
Intertape Polymer Group—Lugo has
been with Intertape Polymer Group
since 2013. Before joining Intertape, he
was Payroll Manager for Vitera Healthcare Solutions for six years.
Their audience will better understand the
factors driving technology, such as the rise
of digital-savvy Millennials, the popularity
of devices such as tablets and smart phones,
stronger mobile networks, social media, and
rapid innovation cycles. All of these have
an impact on payroll technology, and the
panelists will share their views on today’s
technology landscape.
Before and after the Pre-Congress Luncheon,
the Pre-Congress program offers several workshops to enlighten you and whet your appetite for the educational opportunities to come.
Session 1 is from 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m., Session
2 from 9:45 a.m. – 11:15 a.m., and Session 3
from 2:15 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. Each session offers
14 workshops from which to choose.
After the luncheon, the Power Hour
Workshop Session features these six options:
• Hotline Referral Committee Meeting
• Knowledge Transfer for New Chapter
Officers
• Making a Difference Through Volunteer
Committees
• PayTrain® Overview
• Talent Management Through Payroll
Assessments
• The Affordable Care Act Is in Effect:
What Could Go Wrong?

sure to grab a seat at the Opening General

Tributes Receive Final Training Scores Before Payroll Games Begin
By Brandy Gaskins
The Payroll Games is a breathtaking pageant
of honor, knowledge, and bravery. One
tribute from each of the APA’s nine regions
has been selected to compete for the title
of payroll champion and make their region
proud. At the end, only one will stand alone
in the arena as the victor, an example of what
it takes to overcome any payroll obstacle.
For the past several months, the tributes
have been undergoing intense training and
preparation that has been documented
every step of the way within the pages of
PAYTECH magazine and on
social media. Armed with
their own special tool of
choice and years of knowledge and experience in
the payroll profession,
they all have proven to be formidable
competitors.
In April, the APA opened up the doors
of the Tributes’ Training Room to the
general public on the Annual Congress
Facebook page at www.facebook.com/
AnnualCongress. Here, people were able
to learn about each tribute and see how
the regions stacked up against one another.
Once a day, visitors could cast a vote for the
tribute they felt had what it takes to win
The Payroll Games.
Based on YOUR feedback within the
Tributes Training Room, the tributes
Tributes’
will enter the arena during the Opening
General Session today at 4:00
p.m. with the following
rankings predicting
their success:
1: Raeann Hofkin, CPP—Region 8
2: Rosemarie Fraumeni, CPP—Region 9
3: Christine Stolpe, CPP—Region 3
4: Dan Dycus, CPP—Region 7
5: Levi Meeske, CPP—Region 6
6: Flora Mojica, CPP—Region 1
7: Sally Thomson, CPP—Region 2
8: Scott Angel, CPP—Region 5
9: Karen Davidson, CPP—Region 4
With their training at an end, the tributes
have one final journey left in this adventure.

Take Congress to New Levels With Social Media
By Brandy Gaskins
Social media is an integral part of The Payroll
Games at the 33rd Annual Congress. You can

people. This guide will help you get started
on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram so that
you can reach and engage with fellow payroll

keep in mind:
• Twitter limits users to 140 character
messages. It’s OK to abbreviate or use
symbols to save space.
• Tweet about topics that are relevant to
other attendees. Some examples include
an inspirational quote from a keynote or
special guest speaker, a great tip from an
education session, quotes from session
speakers, an exciting product or service
at the Expo, or sights on the Vegas Strip.

can’t be everywhere. We want to see your
candid shots and the fun you’re having at
your sessions and downtime while in Las
Vegas, and Instagram is the way to do it.
Much like Twitter, it functions on the
hashtag system, so tag all of your Congress
photos with #paycon. You can find fellow
payroll enthusiasts by doing a search for
#paycon and other payroll-related hashtags
and following the users who have used the

New APA President Praises Predecessors
By Kerry Cole
Barbara Youngman, CPP, remembers
attending a Congress and viewing that year’s
current APA President with awe.
“I was almost star-struck,” she confided.
Today, she is that President, and she realizes that, just as those who came before her,
the President doesn’t have all the answers
and has a network of go-to people to turn
to for help and support.
“I still look up to all of the Presidents
before me, and I always will,” she said.
“They’re the ones who have guided us and
made it easier for us. One piece of guidance I’ve received that I will follow is to be
yourself.”
As the Manager of Global Payroll
for global security company Northrop
Grumman, she succeeds Deborah Viers
Traylor, CPP, who steps out of the role after
circumstances led to her service as APA’s
first two-term President.
Barbara said she is often shocked at
the number of payroll professionals she
comes across who do not serve on an APA
committee.
“At Congress, hopefully I can touch others
and give them that starting point and explain
how important it is to take advantage of the
opportunities and resources APA offers,”
she said. “I want to help them become more
active and engaged.”
Should those members have trouble
believing they can rise to the heights Barbara
has, she can take them back to her first days
in payroll. She was waiting tables at Chili’s
Grill & Bar as a college student when she
noticed a job posting for a payroll associate
that paved the way for her career.
“I want to share my experiences so that
they can see that I’m a real person and if I
can do it they can do it,” she said. “I don’t
want to be just another speaker saying the
same old thing. I really do want to deliver a
message through my story.”
She learned from mentors who came
before her, former APA Presidents, and
other leaders who she knows are down to
earth.
“Everyone is so sincere and genuine,”
Barbara said. “This is what makes it so great.
Payroll is not all about me and what I am
going to get out of this. If people are trying
