What HRAs Don’t Tell You
Health risk assessments (HRAs) are now fairly commonplace, helping employers, health
plans and healthcare systems gain insight into the physical health of their worker, member
and patient populations. However, their typical focus on physical risk factors means HRAs fall
short of generating the information needed to address other influences on health and selfcare. For example, HRAs usually don’t gather data about an individual’s financial situation, an
area that can greatly impact wellness, productivity and quality of life.
So in terms of helping individuals get a better picture of their physical health and assisting
organizations in benchmarking the current state of their populations, using an HRA is a small
step in the right direction. The insight they generate, however, is limited.
Examining All the Well-Being Elements for a Comprehensive Picture
By contrast, the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being 5™ assessment provides a much more holistic,
accurate picture of current well-being. It is the most complete measurement of well-being in
the industry.
More than a simple HRA, the Well-Being 5 is a scientific survey instrument and reporting
experience used to measure, report and track an individual’s well-being. It measures the five
interrelated elements that research has shown to have the greatest impact on an individual’s
well-being: purpose, social, financial, community and physical (see sidebar).
Insights gained in taking the Well-Being 5 help individuals take the first steps on their journey
to living better. During the survey and reporting experience, individuals get personalized
information and an action plan that emphasizes the areas that need the most immediate
attention and provides positive reinforcement on behaviors to sustain.
This reporting experience is unique in the industry and is designed to maximize both engagement and action. It’s based on the principles of Healthways WholeMind Engagement™,
which includes making the best choice the easy choice, suggesting direct action, moving
the individual through the experience in increments that allow for learning, and providing
feedback on what is most valuable to that individual.

Decades of Research to Ensure the Exact Formula
The Well-Being 5 is based on decades of scientific research by Gallup and Healthways. The
question set was developed using a rigorous process in which Gallup and Healthways experts
evaluated hundreds of well-being questions and millions of responses to determine specific
question and response wording and question order. Questions were chosen based on their
power to identify risk and predict outcomes with optimal validity, accuracy and precision.
Questions are designed specifically to focus on aspects of individuals’ well-being that are
under their control. This helps individuals stay engaged, learn about well-being and identify
actions they can take to improve well-being. Question order is designed to group similar
items by question type and to move from general to more specific, which reduces the intellectual requirement demanded of the user, improves accuracy and completion rates, and speeds
completion time.
With the most accurate and comprehensive well-being information at their fingertips, organizations can more strategically act to improve well-being, lower healthcare costs, and drive
business performance and productivity.
