switching station at INKEL Site, Panakkad
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR HIGH VOLTAGE CABLES AND ACCESSORIES
SPECIFICATION OF 11 KV CABLE:
The cable is 3 c 300sq.mm with XLPE insulated and armoured conforming to IS 7098 PART –
2 for 11 KV earth neutral system. The conductor shall be stranded and compacted circular
for all cables. Cables shall be provided with both conductor screening and insulation
screening. There will be an overall sheath of PVC. The short circuit withstand capacity of
cable is 18.3kA for 3 sec. The cables shall be suitable for laying in built-in trenches,
underground buried installation with uncontrolled backfill and possibility of flooding by
water and chemicals, in ducts and pipes. Each drum of 3x300 sq.mm cable has 500m. Cables
will be supplied by Inkel.

for the type of cables offered as per this specification. The accessories shall be supplied in
kit form. Each component of the kit shall the manufacture's mark of origin. The kit shall
include all stress grading, insulating and sealing materials apart from conductor fittings and
consumable items. An installation instruction sheet shall also be included in each kit. The
contents of the accessories kit including all consumables shall be suitable for storage
without deterioration at a temperature of 45º with self life extending to more than 5 years.
TERMINATING KITS: The terminating kits shall be suitable for termination of the cables to
indoor switchgear or to a weatherproof transformer/motor. For outdoor terminations,

Laying of 11 KV, 3C X 300 sq mm HT XLPE UG Cable from
110 KV KSEB S/S Malappuram West to the proposed
switching station at INKEL Site, Panakkad
Transporting, loading and unloading of 3x300 sq.mm XLPE UG Cable using crane from stock
yard to work site without any damage is contractor’s responsibility. When unloading cable
drums, they shall be carefully lifted and placed on the ground. Under no circumstances
cable drums should be dropped to the ground as the shock may cause heavy damages to
the inner layers of the cable. For removing the cable from the drum it should be supported
on suitable jacks and the drum is rotated to unwind the cable from the drum. Cable should
never be pulled while unwinding from the drum. Cable rollers shall be used for laying of
cables and cable should be properly handled while laying to avoid any damage.
The cables are to be laid in different ways in different areas. Some places where the
passage/road can’t be excavated, HDD have to be adopted with HDPE pipes. The places
where crossing bridges/entrances, 160mm GI pipes buried and cable laid in it. In most of
the areas cables are directly buried in excavated trenches of size 40cm wide and 100cm
depth. Before laying of cable in excavated trench in soil a layer of 25mm sand shall be
provided for the purpose of cushioning. Above this, cable is laid. It is to be covered with the
another layer of sand 125mm. The sides and top surface is to be properly leveled and
covered with country burnt bricks in a manner to overlap the cable on either side by 5cm.
thereafter the trench is to be filled with soil to a height of 20 cm over which the concrete
slabs of 50 x 25 x 5 cm is to be placed continuously. Above this trench is again filled with soil
to a height of another 20cm above that HDPE warning tape for the entire cable route is to
be placed and soil filled. Each soil filling is to be compacted and leveled. The cable markers
made in cast iron with HT cable marking with concrete block base is to be placed is spaced
at a distance of 100m and at every change in the direction. After laying all these cables
provide 2 mtr long 110mm GI pipes for end protections.
.
SPECIFICATION OF EARTHING:
Supply of 3 Mtr. long 50 mm GI pipe earth electrode buried in ground with alternate layer
of charcoal and salt including construction of trough with RCC cover as per IS 3043. The
resistance of earthing system shall not exceed 1.0 ohm.
INSTALLATION AND TESTING:
The installation shall be carried out in accordance with the Indian Electricity Rules, the
Codes of Practice of the Bureau of Indian Standards (IS 1255) and other relevant statutory
regulations.
After installation the cable system with all joints and terminations have to be tested using
5KV Megger and also for continuity. And test results submitted and approval of Electrical
Inspectorate and KSEB obtained for Energisation.
