SPEAKER:
MARK SMITH OF MIDAS
Do we have an incredible speaker lined up for May’s Executives’ Breakfast or
what?! Join us on the 18th when Mark Smith of Midas encourages all of us
to participate for the greater good of our community by supporting our local
connections and growing business in the process.
Six times a year, Mark holds a blood drive with Virginia Blood Services at his
shops that gives blood donors a free oil change. While that initiative alone is
impressive, Mark doesn’t stop there. His Midas shops also donate a backpack
full of food for needy children via the Central Virginia Food Bank for every state
inspection done at one of his local shops. He also is a regular volunteer at the
Food Bank, giving as much of his time as possible.
Register now to attend on May 18! Since Innsbrook
Executives’ Breakfast Series brings people and companies
together to get “connected,” linked in, and supported, having
Mark Smith speak this month is a perfect complement to the
series’ mission. If you would like to showcase your business
and sponsor an Executives’ Breakfast Series,

The Eyes Have it…
by Yvonne Elise Nelson,
Executive Director,
Innsbrook Foundation
“He took my hand and looked into my eyes,” said
the smitten young lady after meeting the man of her
dreams for the very first time. A simple handshake
with confident eye contact is what the veteran
salesman credited for closure on a major account.
This old-fashioned sentiment has the unique quality of
having significant impact whether referring to a personal
encounter or a professional one. No matter what the
context, we all want to see the eyes of the people with whom we interact.
Most people are familiar with the various studies done by leading
psychologists and have, in fact, drawn their own conclusions related to eye contact
and body language whether positive or negative. According to study-bodylanguage.com, “Darting eyes, gazing down or just simple eye contact avoidance
usually suggests deception, anxiety and nervousness. When any of these body
language indicators occur they can make people suspicious.” But, did you know
that you blink more often when you’re nervous or stressed? “When you’re bored
or relaxed, your blink rate can be less than 8 times per minute. In a normal rate it’s
between 10-20 blinks per minute. When nervous, your mind works in turbo mode - it
can go up even to the hundreds.” When spinning a tale and attempting to make the
facts align, there is an increase in anxiety and, therefore, more blinking of the eyes.
“Needless to say, people don’t like to see nervous blinking and mistrust it. There is
apparently even some connection between the amounts of eye blinks to the success
in political elections.”
“Luck is what happens when
preparation meets opportunity.”
― Seneca
But, for the sake of a fair argument, let’s say you do blink and avoid eye contact
just because it is part of your demeanor. It does seem like such a shame to go
through the trouble of getting all “gussied-up” to attend the event with your freshly
laminated and embossed business cards only to miss the opportunity for powerful
contacts because you spend more time staring at the floor than into the eyes of
colleagues. The truth is that every time a person fails to make eye contact that does
not necessarily mean an untruth is being shared. Some people are just plain shy
or insecure. An article in Forbes.com reminds us… “You know it’s not logical. A
person doesn’t have to look at you to hear you. People don’t listen with their eyes.”
Nevertheless, these “deceptive signals” speak volumes to most people. So, what
can you do to both avoid this in your own behavior and improve your ability to
correctly read the signals provided by other people.
Have you ever switched your car gasoline after hearing a “knocking sound”?
Perhaps you changed the dog food for your bright-eyed and bushy-tailed furry
companion after noticing less spring in his step. But, are you as careful with your
own preparation and maintenance? What if you combined restful sleep, exercise and
proper nutrition with the best networking events? It might just put a spring in your
step to the next level. The Innsbrook Foundation staff wants to welcome you to our
monthly Executive’s Breakfast with a firm handshake and steady eye contact…bright

How to Get
the Most Out of
Mother/Daughter
Vacations
by: Beverly McLean,

A mother/daughter getaway is
a perfect celebration of Mother’s
Day, although it’s certainly
something that you can do
together any time of year.
Mother/daughter vacations
create lasting memories but
some planning will make your
experience even better.
Choose the Destination Together
It’s important that you share an
interest in and excitement about your
destination. Find some common ground
and both of you research options. Give
younger children travel guides to pour
over, ask teens to Google destinations on
the short list, or talk with your own mom
or adult daughter about her bucket list.
Do you both crave warm sun and
sand? Consider the Florida Gulf Coast,
Caribbean or Hawaii. Are you nature
lovers? Look at the many fabulous
National Parks. Do you love the bright
lights and sophistication of a big city?
New York or San Francisco are exciting
options. Do you value a healthy, active
lifestyle? A surf camp, yoga retreat or a
cooking school would fit the bill.
Meeting other travelers
their own age gives children
cultural perspective that
may ignite a learning
discussion later. Teens and
young adults will be happy
to get some internet time
to catch up with friends
and Mom just might enjoy
indulging in a spa treatment
or lounging by the pool with
a book!

Families that Play Together…
It’s important to include activities
that you can enjoy together. If you
both love the water, try swimming with
dolphins, a snorkeling excursion or
some beach time. If animals and wildlife
are a common bond, include a zoo, a
horseback ride or a whale watching
cruise. Build some activities around
mutual interests but be open to trying

differing abilities. If you plan a nature
hike, make sure it isn’t too long or too
strenuous for either of you. For outdoor
adventure, the thrill of a zip line might
be exciting to a teen, but a young child
probably won’t qualify by height or an
older mother may have some trepidation.

Too Much of a Good Thing
It’s always a good idea to build in
some alone time during your mother/
daughter vacation. It will help both of
you appreciate the time you do spend
together. Many resorts and cruises have
children’s programs where younger
kids enjoy playing with their peers.
