Theme: The Teaching of Chinese Language in a Multilingual Environment Innovative Practice, Transformative Learning
Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL) of Nanyang Technological University will be hosting
the 4th International Conference on Teaching and Learning of Chinese as a Second Language on 9 - 10
September 2015 to promote research and application of Second Language Teaching and Learning, as well as
to provide experts and educators of Chinese Language a platform to exchange experiences and ideas on
pedagogical approaches. This conference is also co-organised by Ngee Ann Polytechnic, National Institute of
Education and SIM University, and supported by Singapore Chinese Teachers’ Union and Singapore Middle
School Chinese Teachers’ Association.

Abstract can be written in Chinese (400-700 characters) or English (300-600 words), with 3 - 5 keywords. All
abstracts will be sent for double-blind peer review, and authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to submit the
full papers and present at the conference. Language used to write the full paper and for presentation must be
consistent with the abstract. All abstracts are to be submitted online via conference
website http://intconference.sccl.sg by 22 March 2015 (extended to 31 March 2015).

Note: The Academy of Singapore Teachers will sponsor one Chinese Language teacher from

Keynote and Invited Speakers
We are very honoured to have internationally renowned scholars to share their invaluable research
findings in the teaching and learning of Chinese as a second language. The keynote speakers include Dr. Andreas
Guder (Germany Free University of Berlin), Dr. Boping Yuan (University of Cambridge) and Dr. Shih-Chang Hsin
(National Taiwan Normal University). Besides, we have also invited Dr. Huizhong Shen (University of Sydney), Dr.
Pei-Jung Lin (University of Taipei) and Dr. Der-Thanq (Victor) Chen (Nanyang Technological University in
Singapore). Below are the brief introductions of the keynote and invited speakers, as well as the title of their
presentation respectively:

Keynote Speakers
Title: Discussing the Teaching and Learning of Chinese
Characters in TCFL from an Outsider‘s Perspective
Dr. Andreas Guder has been elected president of FaCh (Chinese
Language Teacher’s Association in German Speaking Countries) and
co-editor of “CHUN – Chinesischunterricht” since 2004. Dr. Guder is
the only German representative of the EU project “European
Benchmarking for Chinese Language” (EBCL, 2010-2012).
Title: Syntax-Semantics Interface in Second Language
Acquisition of Chinese Intransitive Verbs
Dr. Boping Yuan is a Reader in Language and Linguistics and a PhD
supervisor at the University of Cambridge, and he is directing the
Chinese programme in Cambridge. He is also Fellow and Director of
Studies in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, Churchill College,
Cambridge. His research interests are in linguistic approaches to
second language acquisition. He has published numerous papers in
refereed international journals as well as in journals in China《外语教
学与研》《世界汉语教学》《现代外语》 etc.
3. Dr. Shih-Chang Hsin

Title: The teaching concept on Chinese listening breadth and
network use -- with a discussion the master-slave issue for

Dr. Shih-Chang Hsin is currently a full professor of Graduate Institute
of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at NTNU, the National
Taiwan Normal University, and visiting professor in Free University in

Dr. Huizhong Shen
University of Sydney
Berlin, Germany, Chulalongkorn University in Thailand.
His research interests include computer-assisted language learning,
distance education, Chinese curriculum design, reading strategies, and
Chinese language globalization, and has published many articles and
some books in above fields.
Invited Speakers
Title: Expanding the Chinese Horizon: Contexts, Challenges and
Strategies
Dr. Huizhong Shen is the Associate Professor in the Faculty of
Education and Social Work, the University of Sydney. His recent
publications are: Teaching Academic Writing (co-authored),
Postmodernism and Process Pedagogy (sole authored) and
Continuum Companion to Research Methods in Applied Linguistics
(co-authored).

Dr. Pei-Jung Lin
University of Taipei
Title: To be confirmed
Dr. Pei-Jung Lin is the Associate Professor of Early Childhood
Education at the University of Taipei. She is also chair of the
department. Her publications include 《婴幼儿的读写发展-0-8
岁的反省式语文教学》 《幼儿教育》(co-authored).

Dr. Der-Thanq (Victor) Chen
Title: Demystifying Bubbles of e-Learning
Nanyang Technological
Dr. Der-Thanq (Victor) Chen is now an Associate Professor with the
Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Academic Group at the National
Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
His research interests include communities of practice, virtual learning
environments and e-learning.
